I understand that this shirt is trying to parody traditional gender stereotypes, but it just doesn't work for me on that level. The title isn't on the shirt (except in the tag), and therefore most people who view it will read it straight, i.e. as an endorsement of those gender roles. You know, I like being a girly princess, and I'm so glad my boyfriend is a manly soldier. That's such . . . BS in my opinion. My relationship is based on having a lot of interests in common, and it's a very happy and fulfilling one.

The shirt needed to have more gender play, like inverting the colours or mixing up the accessories or whatever.

So, I guess the irony is that this shirt is perpetuating the same stereotype that it's trying to examine. That said, I might buy it and wear for when I teach gender studies at the university. :P

Ha. You confused me...

Thinking with your hands, typing, are you?

I think the shirt is perfect the way it is.

Stereotypes exist because on the average they are true. You don't have to teach a boy to like cars and trucks and guns. You don't have to teach a girl to play with dolls and enjoy cute, pink, fuzzy things. Studies have shown that these tendencies are pretty automatic with few exceptions. And people who have children can see the proof of it in action.

Stillusio, I agree with you completely. Switching the pink and blue colors or a handful of the items would have helped to make the artist's intent to be humorous more clear.

SuperPope, "Studies have shown that these tendencies are pretty automatic with few exceptions." What studies? How would such a study be ethically conducted? Baby boys and girls are treated differently and purchased different toys from birth. The preferences they demonstrate when they get older are unlikely to be inate. And Silluiso is the Gender Studies prof here.

I actually just read a book called "Musical Identities" that examines children's relation to music and how they identify themselves with it (for part of the book). It stated that before children have a conscious understanding of the world around them (before about the age of 3-4), boys and girls tend to like all things with no gender preference. After that, boys see society and begin choosing boy instruments such as drums and trumpet while girls lean towards piano and flute. Just my 2 cents...

let me just throw one word out here for y'all

TESTOSTERONE.......

men have it (in large amounts) this is why we think we can fix the kitchen sink or cabinet or build and addition to the house, also it is why we totally will KICK THAT GUY'S ASS IF HE DOESN'T STOP LOOKING AT OUR GIRLFRIEND...etc

this is of course just one example men and women are in fact different..... I mean just LOOK damn it... we have differing brain chemistries...

it is just common sense

boys will in fact be boys.

I'm sick of males blaming their dumb-assed antics on testosterone. We have hormones too, y'know! It's not an excuse for bad behaviour.

look in god damned nature julie

especially at the behavior of other mammals, look at the male of the species fight for dominance for the right to breed...

All animals are violent, not just male ones. But if you're going to reduce the whole of your gender to the level of the beast, have at it.

I think the shirt is glorious and fairly direct in communicating the idea. The objects and colors play with one another wonderfully and I don't know why anyone would want to muck it up with a "title".

Not that I'm anti-type, mind you, but I just love graphics like this that do more than any word ever could. Further, even if it everyone doesn't "get it", it's all the more fun. A good way to start a convo is someone asking "What the hell is that?"

Anyway, I hope I can scrape some spare cash together soon before it sells out. :)

I suppose it's worth adding that I am the pansiest, non-manly male around which may be why this particular design makes me happy.

Yeah, you don't see males eating their young or killing their mates after sex.

The female of the species is deadlier than the male.

Studies indicate that baby boys tend to be born with penises, whereas baby girls tend to be born with vaginas.

the female lions hunt cause the male lion told them to. =p

and know i would not shoot a lion...(that wasn't actively trying to kill me)

i like cats of all sizes.... I do like to shoot, but I don't really go hunting...

i've also never been quite sure how cats got a "girly" reputation

they are vicious little predators ... i suppose it is cause they are "cute" i guess?

I also like dogs ....cats are more friendly to my current work / other scheduling requirements at the moment however.
