It used to be that if there was going to be something bold and splashy on a t-shirt, they'd stick it on the back. The front was reserved for simple logos, or what not. Or maybe you'd have an interesting picture on one side of the shirt and a complimentary logo on the other.

I've poured over all kinds of designs on threadless and not one of them ever put anything on the back of the shirt. Maybe I'm missing the rare "back of shirt" design, I don't know. I've seen front and center. Bottom left of front, on the side, etc...

I was beginning to think that maybe there was some rule that said "designs must be printed on the front half of the shirt, so I sent the following to cusomter service:
I notice that all of your designs are printed on the front. Is it possible to create designs for the back of shirt instead? Is there a document describing the rules for design placement anywhere?

This morning I get the following in my mail:
You can put the print wherever you would like.

Have a wonderful day!

Excellent. A fast and friendly reply AND an answer I wanted to hear. Now all I need is for someone with more artistic talent than me to stick some stuff on the back side of the shirt, no?

i like to think of the front of a shirt as the place to put your own personal superhero logo......

all i've ever seen on the backs of shirts was sponsorship for charity runs, brand names and sports numbers.

i'm actually working on a back design right now, but i don't know how they feel about shelling out the extra cash to print front and back designs....

since back only designs are so rare here, it's a hard sell.

Most people wear jackets in winter, anyway.. wouldn't be able to see the print if it was on the back. Been wanting to do one for a while, though, let's see what i can come up with. Maybe for the december revolution, all unwritten rules will be out the window then.

Yeah, I associate back-of-shirt designs with like Jump Rope For Heart and the Chip & Pepper shirts from way back and the like. I also like to be able to see my design when I'm wearing it and wear a lot of zip-up or open-front cardigans and hoodies, so if I'm wearing a t-shirt under that, you can't see an on-the back design at all.

Woo!

The design I'm working on right now may be too large for just the front, and would lend itself well to a front and back print... we'll see.
