SIGHHH....
for the past 2 weeks i've been scrounging to get a portfolio together....
This coming Friday i am visiting SCAD... to kind of check out the school and campus.
i WAS going to bring a portfolio to submit for the application process, but i've given up. the requirement is 20 pieces....... i have maybe 14 that i am 100% pleased with... i started adding lackluster pieces just to meet the requirements which is not a good sign. i'll just wait and submit a portfolio later in the month.

i feel like such a giver-uper, but it's for the best.

is 20 pieces a lot or is it just me???

P.S.
if anyone wants to see some of my work, let me know - i really need some constructive comments - i've been looking at this stuff for way too long.

...

I visited them this summer. I only brought nine pieces and that was fine.

20 pieces is massive. less is more, and especially show work that you are actually proud of!!

ALSO - congrats on your print! And that better be in your portfolio!!!

also, if you scheduled your tour already you can meet with somebody afterwards to go over your portfolio and talk about it and for that you don't really need everything all put together.

AngelitO, i'm glad you think 20 is a lot too, i was freaking out - i'm like drained... unless i put in pieces from my undergrad in there.

ohh I see.

I liked it.

My impressions were that They're Fucking Loaded and also there's a Coi Pond in the darkroom.

Is your portfolio similar to the online version on linked above? Bit difficult to see from that - the samples are VERY small!

yeah, 20 pieces that you actually like is pretty hard to do. I know I would find it extremely hard to put togheter 20 works that I actually loved, cause I did them myself and know whats wrong with them, but others might like em!

Sometimes its good to get others opinions and see what your design is objectively... helps me a lot sometimes. You might have more work then you think you do!

my portfolio has completely changed, that one is 2 years old... and yes the samples are small :) it was my first flash website.

i am submitting a book though, it won't be digital.

thank you, by the way :)

i know what you mean about letting others view things, i keep showing things to my boyfriend... BUT i guess there should be a non-partial 3rd party involved though :)

Yeah, 20 pieces is a lot... I mean, coming up with ANY pieces that you're 100% happy with is hard enough, much less 19 more on top of that. You should use threadless designs though!

   melh696 on Sep 04 '07 at 6:57pm
vandv i'm so glad you agree - isn't it usually 10 - 12 pieces?

I'm adding 2 threadless designs, i don't want too many illustrations though cause i'm deffinitly not an illustrator first.

Mel I have seen your portfolio online..and all your pieces look great!

I can see how you would have 20 items. But ya thats a lot. Just put the best stuff - I say 2-3 for each thing (like Print Design, Package Design, etc)

I can't give much advise since I need advise for this stuff too.

it's tough, becasue my portfolio has become quite specialized...

i've been working for American Greetings' retail graphics deoartment for the last 2 years... i have a wide variety of designs, but they are all in similar formats.

when is your projected graduation date???

i took screen shots of the rough page layouts...

if you can't get into SCAD then there is no god.

you have crazy illustration powers

You should look into a job at an small advertising agency or graphic design firm. You are over qualified and It would definitaly broaden your port.

thank you!

i do have other pieces without the AG logo, from freelance work and stuff... i realize that it looks overwhelmingly greeting cards-ish, but thank you for the comments!

BORING is right...

thank you!

if you go out to an American Greetings or carlton cards store soon, you'll see those signs hanging! they are actually like 4' x 4' and hang from the ceiling....

a lot of those pieces are like 6 ft. tall, it's kind of deceiving not seeing them in the retail environment. ah well, i guess size doesn't matter... in this case.
