usually it looks bad and it's a bit superfluous.

it's one of the great modernist creeds: show, don't tell.

as a rule, text works when it's shown. it doesn't work when it tells what's going on.

Text can work..but only if the person doing the design has some typographic skill and the text isn't stupid.

because it may say something that you disapprove of.

people draw with no evident artistic talent

Not to say I don't like your design, but I'm not really digging the discreet-but-not-because-I-know-it's-there sort of self promoting on your blogs.

I don't often like text becuase text is just as important as the design and a lot of the time people don't treat it as so. Most of the time the text is a font that looks like someone just threw it on the Tee, I usually only like text when it is well done and hand drawn.

I agree with Steve, text works best when the text is what the majoritory of the image, not when its explain the image. For example I love this shirt, the shirt is about the text not the picture:

i buy plain tees, and 'screen' my own designs using masking tape, an xacto, and acrylic paint. it's tedious but rewarding - you get a one-off tee shirt that is truly unique. not good for high-detail designs though!
