The "original" drawing that everybody is so up in arms about is a comic book from the 1960s. Here's the image if you don't know (http://possumblog.mu.nu/images/beatcolor1.jpg).

The funny thing? My grandmother was a coloring book artist in the 1960s.

That's one of her drawings.

The point: She's 80, doesn't have a computer, and she has a great sense of humor. She took the picture originally from an actual Beatles photograph, so it's more of a copy from a copy.

I love the Beatles alot. They're my favorite band in the world, and I think this t-shirt is hilarious.

I am going to back my sister kory up on this one. My grandmother did the original artwork, but it was from a beatles photograph. And she is the coolest 80 year old woman that I know and would be flattered to see her work being used in this context. I think this shirt is great. I might get it for her, actually...

From this point on, please direct all "stolen artwork" claims and complaints to Kory's 80 year old grand mother. Thank you.

So you don't care that the "designer" completely stole your grandma's work and is profiting from it?...

so the person that submitted this did nothing but put some bows on it ?
Why is it ok to steal art and submitt it for a prize here? (if this is really the case)

I have more of a problem with the Graphic Equalizer guy's tshirt than I do with this one. That one is a direct copy of the coloring book page, and no personal artistic effort has been put into it at all.

The shirt here has obviously been redrawn and added too, enough for me to consider it a new picture. I've seen people use "found art" all the time on tshirts, and I don't see how this is much different.

Bob: The "designer" as you put it didn't completely steal my grandmother's artwork. He took the drawing (which is a drawing that was taken from a photograph to begin with, would you say my Grandmother completely stole the photographer's work and made profits from it?) and modified it to have another meaning. I think it's clever and well-done.

Jagadey: The designer did more than stick some bows on it. If you look at the design it's been redrawn. The original artwork had pieces of the figures missing to fit into the coloring book format, and you can see on this tshirt that those pieces are their. The artist of this piece did much more than just "put some bows on it."

Stubby 42: I'm afraid I can't give you solid proof. My grandmother's name is Nan Pollard, and you can find a few of her things online, but not many. Back when she worked it was a standard company thing to not put the names of the artists on the books they drew. She has a very recognizeable style if you know what to look for, the date of the coloring book is right and the scan I saw of the original artwork screams of her style. I also checked it with my mother (who is her daughter) and she told me my grandmother definately made it.

That's all the proof I need, but I can see if others would find it faulty.

wow..if this is true, then that must really suck.. korybing, you're actually being way too nice if indeed it's true.. I wouldn't consider the shirt redrawn at all.. I agree more with jagadey.. the lines are exactly the same.. it's not redrawn.. it looks more like if they simply vectorized the image and just added bows and finished the unfinished edges which would take like 10 min tops. how can you see it as a new picture? I would definitely be pissed off if anyone took a drawing of mine and made a minimal change to it like that and consider it theirs.. it's still stealing.. isn't it? To make it worste, they profited from it! Would have been different if they drew it from scratch. cuz then you would consider that they also drew it based on a picture.. which would then make it ok.. cuz face it, lots of us view pictures as a guide. But that's my view.. may be wrong.. as long as the real artist of it feels ok with it, then there shouldn't be a problem I guess.
