Man, I still don´t believe it!

Yesterday, I received an email alerting me on a possible copy from one of my recent works. In case a part of a drawing that recently was printed.

So, one guy take the drawing remake (badly) one of the caracters on this print and post in a site that shares vectors.

The print in question was post here in Brazil. A brazilian site like "Threadless" creat a contest with the briefing "World Cup 2006". I´ve got the 3rd place and my T-shirt was printed.

As matter of fact I´ve saw my T-shirt on TV the other day. I was watching one of the games of Brazil and saw may tshirt junping on the crowd! That part was awesome!

See the people wearing your design is the greatest part. =D

The part that I´m still in doubt is if it´s great or not being copied. One part of me was very flattered. Yes, flattered!
Being copy means, in part, that I´ve made a good job. In other hand, someone else is getting credit with your work.

It´s clear that I must do something. But what you do in my place?

My work

The copy (u need roll the page down)

I can't believe you're even complaining. Most of your designs are blatant rip-offs of Audrey Kawasaki. There is a difference between incorporating style and just copying peoples images. I saw your work in Ideafiza, looks like you literally traced Audrey's work in those pieces, pretty lame.

if you don't have proof, don't accuse someone of stealing art. you sound like an ass.

I've seen Audrey's stuff at galleries in LA and it looks nothing like fgirardi's stuff, which is also amazing btw.

Jesus was black.

I know this isn't easy for you guys to accept but I can prove it. Here are just 3 examples of what I'm talking about, the red lines highlighting obvious proportional traces made by Fabio of Audrey's work (Audrey's work on the left column, Fabio's work on the right column):

http://www.angelfire.com/rings/cloxboy/stylerip.gif

I'm not an ass, not usually anyway and I'm certainly not an ass for pointing this out to you. The fact that Fabio is ripping off another artist's style/work, selling the designs, ignoring the copyrights, should make you angry at Fabio, not me. He thinks just because his work is digital and that he changes a couple things that no one would notice but me and a few others have.

Just look at her gallery: http://www.audrey-kawasaki.com/2007/

Now look at Fabio's work in this magazine (this is recently posted work from 2007), click on "Women" above the '5', then flip the pages of the virtual mag until you see Fabio's work: http://www.ideafixa.com/

There are some distinct qualities in Audrey's work that you can easily see in Fabio's pieces. Consider the head structure, facial proportions and floating limbs. Also note the subtle gradients in the skin, the eye shapes, poses, they're just like Audrey's, if not traced directly from one of her pieces.

I've asked a few people, professional illustrators and artists alike, and they have come to the same conclusion as I have, Fabio is ripping Audrey's style. Someone brought this to my attention and I wasn't about to let it fly, especially after reading him complaining about his images being ripped, what a hypocrite.

Okay, that does pretty much prove without a doubt and I have to give you huge props on your detective work. It's unfortunate because fgirardi's stuff is amazing and the guy obviously has talent.

This has happen before, I think it was a user named rudeboyzach who was called out in exactly the same manner. Irrefutable was presented and haven't seen him since.

the disappearing body-into-the-background is something I've never seen in fgirardi's work either, that is something I've seen in almost all of Audrey's work.

I'm shocked you even figured that out. Pretty blatant in the examples you've shown, but I never would have pieced that together without help.

That's the idea mjoo, he tried to change her designs enough in terms of color and style, to the point that the average public wouldn't notice. It's not an uncommon technique among t-shirt artists to borrow elements from other artists but Fabio has gone too far. Audrey and I work for the same company and we've shown together in LA, I have a lot of respect for her. Regardless what comes of this knowledge, I've passed it on to Audrey, she deserves to know what's going on.

I emailed Fabio at the address listed in his Camiseteria profile so that he can respond, if he has anything to say.

"Audrey says they're different enough that she's not worried about it. Personally, I'd give him a cease & desist, but she's too nice."

That's what Leah, a friend of Audrey's, told me when seeing the link I posted above. Looks like Fabio is off the hook, at least from Audrey. Either way, I hope Fabio and everyone else who tries to rip off other artists know that they'll get caught eventually. Fabio has good rendering skills, I don't understand why he would cheapen his reputation by copying another artist. I hope he learns from this incident.

First of all i hope that everyone understand my english, cause it´s lil´ rusty.

Well, i must thanks to mj00 for the email. Has been a while since visit the site for last time. So i didn´t knew whats going on. So thanx...and im doing in parts... ok?

Zinker:I know, that as a huge fan of audrey´s work, as u are, i imagined, you would been very mad when someone, that u never knew, seems to copy one of your idol´s work. Maybe in your place i´d did the same. So thanx, for u too for doing that. So i can explain everything. And maybe stop with that subject.

Der friends,

As u can see...in my previous posts, my work always fallowing a style, (that people used to call of “litle dolls”). I think that everyone agrees that style isnt similiar to audrey´ s work. So...if u agree with that u will see that the proportions and stuff are always been present in my work. That proportions came from manga style... is not my invention... Well thats said, the only thing that i did was make that dolls big, in the same proportions. When i start drawing the first one (whats yo flava?) i post the drawing dont yet fineshed in here. For people could see step by step. If u follow the post u would see, how that draw was at the beggining, and maybe, i hope, you´d think different. In that time, i dind knew the audreys work. The idea, consist in a girl melting. Among all kinds of complemments somone said something like: “you are just a cheap copy of audrey kawasaki”. Ow gosh...when i saw her works... God... i felt so flattered with that comment. I comment that should let me down, put me up! And in a second, Audrey start to live im my heart with one of my favorites artists of all time. I think if met her i would cry..I dont know how this thing goes... but of course she became a huge influence on me. Like an idol u know? Somebody u wanna follow, and maybe someday be good as she is. But, never, in my life i would trace a audreys work. This would be like a steal, and i´d never steal from my idol. Altough i must say that your facts, zinker, are so good, that even let ME shock it. And never thouh that her influence was too big for me like that. But i know, in all my haert that, i didint copy her works. Maybe her influence was so huge in that time that her style glued on me, i guess. Is that wrong? I honnestly don´t know. I always ask people (professional in the area, designer, illustrators..) opinions. I much more i ask, my doubt grows even more. I even show them her works, for they could ask honnestly if my peces are to close. Fortunnaly, for all people that this works just 3, that is too similar. I never consider myself as ilustrator, or a artist, maybe iam a designer...and just that. So, i dont know if that helps, i never win a pence, for that works... If u consider a WYF? a plagiarism too, that was a only one.

And Whats a plagiarism? Whats a influence? Just reference? Whats is a copy? One style has a owner? Maybe u can help me grown in that area. The concepts of copy are different in differents areas of design? When the designer realese a mini skirt, he owns that kind of leght? The Zune design is a plagiarism from a iPod? So if draw, girls with floating limbs im copying her? For that questions i dint have awsers yet...Honnestly

Just for the record...limbs was always used in my works... in thal post u will see even bad comments about that:

http://www.threadless.com/submission/69556/Silent_Movie_Scarlett/showmore,designs

Another point: in this post i didnt complaning about the plagiarism. Im saying that i´m very flattered, about it. Is the way a saw it. The objective of the post was know how would u felt in this positision. So im not been hipocrate.

That said, let me talk about the solutions:

I CONTACT THE OWNERS, THE EDITOR OF ALL SITES WHERE MY WORKS ARE PUBLISHED. I NOTIFIED THEM ABOUT THIS OPINIONS AND LET THEM FREE TO DO AS THEY WISH. ALTOUGH THE ONES THAT ANSWER ME HAVE THE SAME OPNIONS, THAT AUDREY SHOW. THAT WERE DIFFERENT ENOUGH TO COEXIST.

I ADMMIT THAT I M STILL ON MY OWN STYLE SEARCH. BECAUSE...AS ANY ONE, I DONT WANNA ANYMORE BE POINTED AS COPYCAT (MOST OF ALL CAUSE I M NOT THIS). SO AS U CAN SEE, I DINT POST ANITHING ELSE, UNTIL FIND MY OWN... AND JUST MY OWN... STYLE, I KOWN THAT I CAN ACHIEVE THAT.

AT LAST, THE ONLY ONE THAT IM WORRIED ABOUT IS AUDREY. I KNOW THAT I DIDNT DO ANYTHING WRONG. BUT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT 3 PIECES I GUESS (WRIGHT ZINKER?) SO IF SHE FELT HURT, IN ANY POINT I WOULD BE MORE THAN PLEASED TO DO ANYTHING THAT SHE WANTS TO. SO IF SOMENE KNOW HER, PLEASE, SAY THAT I WOULD BE HONOUR TO TALK DIRECT TO HER, OR A CORRESPONDENT, IF SHE WANTS TO. IM NOT SAYNG THIS AS “TAKING THE BLAME”, IM JUST SAYNG TO CLOSER THE SUBJECT, AND BECAUSE I KNOW THAT I CAN DO SOMETHING KNEW. FOR MORE THAT THIS HURT ME, THAT PIECES WONT BE MISSED, IF SHE (AND ONLY SHE) FELT THAT I HAVE TO ERASE THEM. I LOVE HER WORK TO MUCH, AND I CAN DO THIS FOR HER.

IF I LET SOMETHING UNCLEAR, ORE IF SOMEONE IS STILL FELT HURT, PLEASE, DONT HESITATE TO CONTACT ME. I DONT HAVE A PROBLEM AT ALL TO TALK WITH ANYONE ELSE.

BEST WISHES
