Ok well like most artists I tend to bounce from project to project but I'm really feeling this one! And almost 3 months later I'm still enjoying the whole process immensely.
Anyways... I thought I'd share with my threadless friends (and aquaintences). I'll be popping these up on etsy later tonight probably. I'm considering trying to put together a kickstarter thing so I can take the project and get it out there. That said I'm terrible with writing up things but I'll deal with that later I guess. So basically my thoughts were that there were no "cool" yard decorations etc. I mean seriously.... ?? All I see is angel puppies and garden gnomes. Not that they're not ok for some people but I wanted something more fun and clever. I start with sculpting the thing.. then bake and clean it up. I found someone nearby me with a casting studio who is amazing btw.. and taught me how to make moulds from my sculptures. Once I got the mould I had to learn how to mix and pour concrete... and believe me I never knew how tricky it could be! There are so many different mixtures and no real recipe.. and people who jealously guard their "mixes". Anyways... once out of the mould I clean them up and patch any air bubbles and then paint them with a special paint that keeps away mildew and some moisture. Some just get the classic white finish while others will get the full on color paint treatment. Garden Tardis - the biggest sculpture yet.. I've got plans for a set of 3 of one other Dr. Who item at this time. Sculpture is in process and is maybe only a third of the way done. This next item will be the most complicated one I've attempted yet. ![]() Late 1800's style Alien bust First of the series.. there will be other busts coming in the future. ![]() Bigger "little" green army men - Bazooka guy These will be available in classic colors of green, red, blue, and khaki. There will also be other little army guys joining the platoon eventually. ![]() Bigger "little" green army men - Crawling dude These will be available in classic colors of green, red, blue, and khaki. There will also be other little army guys joining the platoon eventually. ![]() I've got tons more stuff coming but the sculpture process is slow as is the actual making of the moulds themselves. But going forward it should be much faster since I've got the hang of it. I lost like a full months time trying to figure out a good durable concrete mix. Any thoughts? Good idea? Sucky idea? You don't get it? Like every artist I would love be able to make a living doing what I enjoy. So I really really really want to make this work.
