Ok so I'm in a tough bind... I've been unemployed for 2 years (mostly with very little freelance in between).

I finally got a job offer... but they're offering me the bottom of the range they gave me when I first interviewed with them. They're also doing relocation "reimbursement" which isn't great. I'd much rather have a lump sum up front to spend on moving. Mostly as I don't know how long it would take my boyfriend to get a transfer and well I won't be moving anything till that happens. Until them I'd just move up alone and sublease someplalce.

Can I negotiate? I'm bummed that they "loved" me so much but are only offering the very bottom of the range they gave me.

And I'm totally not sure what to do about the relocation reimbursement stuff too.. even if I did accept it after 2 yrs of unemployment I have no savings or credit that I can use to put up front the moving costs for them to reimburse me later.

i always feel powerless in interviews and being hired by people i don't know. ya never wanna push a potential employer away obviosly but, with my latest job acquisition i've learned that you definitely have some room to at the very least, discuss the options available. i'd most definitely explain your situation maybe ask why they're giving you the barest minimum and how quickly an advancement is possible.

I think it's fair to negotiate. Just explain your situation and what you need to make it work.

Yeah, just be honest with your situation and they may be able to give you an advance on the moving expenses. Also, a lot of times employers offer the bottom because they want room for negotiations. I know we do that, anyway.

*bottom of the range... not just their bottoms. That would be awkward.

i think it's fair to negotiate.

also, what ended up happening with me was that they gave me a bit less than i wanted salary-wise, but made it up to me in a lump-sum bonus that was paid to me after 1 week of employment. it really helped with my move. it worked better for them that way, too, because they only had to pay the headhunter based on my salary amount, and were able to sneak in the bonus without legally owing them more.

Negotiating is fair but don't expect them to budge. The company hiring you is a business first and foremost. They can offer you a lower range salary because there's probably a gaggle of other folks who would take the job at the same pay (or lesser!) than you. My advice would be to explain your situation, tell them you're excited about the great opportunity but need them to be a little flexible and then see what happens.

sounds good. Thanks for all the advice everyone. I'm going to think about what i can do and decide if I should call the lady or email. She seemed very personable so a phone conversation might be better but I'm not sure. I'll honestly take the job no matter what but I don't want to just settle for their bottom price since it was the same as my salary 4 yrs ago. Technically for my experience the average is salary is over their top price but I'd be more than happy with the middle of the range they gave me... which was what i was expecting.

i think you're better off calling than emailing.

well they didn't budge.. but its ok i guess :)

apparently WA state doesn't have state income tax.. and the relocation is what it is.

I was prepared for that but in any case I once again have a real job!

Hrmm... I've got a A.A. in Design & a B.A. in Fashion Design. Sucky though that with all those degrees I've only ever had to take 1 computer graphics course. But I've learned alot through working experience. Anyways I'm currently working as an Accessory Designer in LA.

I love my cat. His name is Zelazny and he's just the sweetest kitty ever! He love people... even strangers! He love taking naps where he doesn't belong and being picked up and those little kitty treats with the crunchy outside and squishy inside. He love feather sticks and little catnip mice. He does not like dogs and other cats. He is a big bully and will try to beat them up. He will also meow until you pick him up and give him attention. :D
