illustrator (you dont have to worry about the size of design because its vector based, uses low cpu resources and its easy to separate colors ).

Photoshop (Awesome for paintings and colorful designs, but you have to work on a high resolution 150-300 dpi, thats a lot of cpu usage and can cause slowdowns with heavy layered files, )

Illustrator, unless you've got a really intricate hand sketched illustration that you want to added realistic colouring / elements, in which case, Photoshop.

Right now it's Photoshop, but that's because that's all I have. Does that really count as a choice then...?

I use both. Illustrator for line work, colouring on photoshop.

Illustrator for flat vector shapes, templates, colours.
Photoshop for textures or painterly effects.

They both have their limitations and advantages. Illustrator is infinitely scalable because of its vector format, but has poor textures and brushstroke effects. Photoshop has a range of filters and effects that illustrator doesn't but you have to be aware of resolution. I also find Photoshop fiddly for certain simple things.

Its just person taste I guess. There are a million places you can find the creative suite.
