I'm making a Christmas list and if I don't specify which books I want my family will buy me YA (young adult) books, and no one wants that.

Go!

Woops. I meant to underline that.

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls.

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer

Naked by David Sedaris

I haven't had much time to read during this semester.
Fermata
Fermata on Dec 03 '07 at 7:17pm
I have that already. I have an entire shelf of unread Steinbeck. Which is very sad.

I always thought that you use italic in type and underline in handwriting?

No?
Fermata
Fermata on Dec 03 '07 at 7:17pm
Haha, I have the first two on there, Khol. And I'm reading Me Talk Pretty One Day right now.
Fermata
Fermata on Dec 03 '07 at 7:19pm
Just thinking of The Glass Castle makes me laugh. Something caught on fire in like every chapter. I'm sure it's a metaphor or something, but when I read it it just seemed funny.

Come on guys, I know you read.

But yeah, I should get that.

On my own Christmas list I asked for Fast Food Nation, the Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe, and a book of ee cummings poetry...

Also, I think I'm going to buy myself A Christmas Carol....to get into the spirit, and because Dickens is awesome.

Get Truth and Consequences by Keith Olbermann. I can't wait for it to come out.
Fermata
Fermata on Dec 03 '07 at 7:46pm
We read Fast Food Nation in English. If you ever want to eat McDonald's again, I don't recommend it. XP

I found a 1920's copy of Poe's Masterpieces of Mystery at a book sale a couple weeks ago. Loooove.

Clockwork Orange and A Confederacy of Dunces though I have yet to finish either.

The first of the Dune series was spectacular.

I'm currently reading a free e-book called The Banjo Players Must Die. it's a quite hilarious look upon our future troubles.

Also, A Year Of Living Biblically is awesome. It's about an agnostic who tries out living along side the Bible for a whole year literally, fairly. Funny and informative.

Love in the Time of Cholera - Gabriel Garcia Marquez

One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch - Solzhenitsyn

Nobody Belongs Here More Than You - Miranda July

and picking up a book of EE Cummings poetry would be nice

I also love Carl Sandburg

I was going to read Love in the Time of Cholera, but then silly Oprah had to go and ruin it. (I don't read anything Oprah tells people to read.
Fermata
Fermata on Dec 03 '07 at 8:11pm
It is a silly reason, but it's just one of my things. I have to wait for the hype to die down so I don't look like I'm only reading it because some lady on TV told me to.

The Good Earth is my favorite book, and she 'ruined' it too.
margolove
margolove on Dec 03 '07 at 8:12pm
I LOVE The Good Earth.

yeah, the Oprah's book club thing is annoying... but obviously that's really superficial and not a good reason to deprive yourself of a good piece of literature.
Fermata
Fermata on Dec 03 '07 at 8:14pm
We all have our quirks, and one of mine is that I absolutely despise Oprah. Maybe it was my childhood when my mom would make me watch that instead of cartoons. I'll get over it, and I'll read all the books I say she has 'ruined' eventually. I have plenty of things to read in the mean time.

No one appreciates The Good Earth. It's pretty much amazing.

Fermata on Dec 03 '07 at 8:15pm
In other news, my mom is watching Oprah right now and Oprah just said "va-jay-jay". Wooow.
margolove

aw, we read it in my Female American Lit. class and most people actually really liked it.
Fermata
Fermata on Dec 03 '07 at 8:18pm
I keep trying to make my school book club read it, but I always get voted down. I think historical fiction gets a bad rap. They'd much rather read YA and freaking Dean Koontz. Argh.

Fermata on Dec 03 '07 at 8:18pm
Sometimes you have to require people to read good books for them to know which books are good.

Slaughterhouse 5 is fantastic. We read it in our school book club and no one "got it". There's nothing to get. Kids these days...

Anything by Hunter S. Thompson

Finished the "Rum Diary" a while back. Want to pick up "Gonzo" pretty soon.

I also just started reading "The Haymarket Tragedy". Great book about the strike/riot/bombing/trials from the Chicago Haymarket incident.
