caution: retro video game geek babble ahead: so i'm currently tracking down most of the zelda games i missed when they came out, and i was keen to play majora's mask as it's been getting a lot of appreciation lately as the "underrated experimental zelda masterpiece". hadn't played it since it came out, never owned it back in the days and thus never got to finish it properly-then a couple of days ago i found it at a thrift store for about $4.(woo hoo!)
so now it's back to the well.

i have to say that although i still find the first 20 minutes of the game excruciatingly annoying, and at times the time limit is a pain in the ass as it kinda hinders the enjoyment of just exploring(well, until you learn a few songs at least), it really opens up into being one of the more interesting zelda games after a while, especially since i've always been more keen on the sidequests than the main adventure in the zelda series anyway. though the graphics were impressive at the time, they show their age 9 years later. i keep catching myself thinking that both the presentation and the whole time travel mechanic would have worked a lot better in the cleaner, more easily navigable iconic top down 2d format, though.

it's a lot fresher than twilight princess, at any rate, but i'd put it after wind waker(short but amazing, and while many may loathe the endless sailing, i loved it) oot, lttp(both unquestionably great) and minish cap (the kinstone bits were like crack to me) on the zelda scale of addictiongasm

as neat as the simplistic three day cycle in MM is, i still think it's about time someone made a SUPER COMPLEX time travel game where you could create all sorts of paradoxes and shit. it'd be neat if it saved all your movements and you had to avoid direct contact with previous incarnations of your time travelling self for fear of imploding the universe, back to the future II style.
tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on Jul 02 '09 at 2:19pm
that would be ridiculously awesome
OlliRudi
   OlliRudi on Jul 02 '09 at 2:19pm
wind waker is hands down the best game on the gamecube. yes, i like it even better than RE4.
tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on Jul 02 '09 at 2:19pm
and would also probably take up a ton of memory
OlliRudi
   OlliRudi on Jul 02 '09 at 2:24pm
hell, today's systems could handle it if they downgraded the cosmetics. i wouldn't mind if it was graphically on par with a SNES game, as long as they'd been able to implement all sorts of time travel-based memory eating cause/effect wizardry-

I just picked up "The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap" for the GBA...it's the same style and follows after "The Four Swords" I believe. I haven't played it yet, but I am looking forward to doing so when I get a chance!
OlliRudi
   OlliRudi on Jul 02 '09 at 2:30pm
minish cap is fucking awesome. i played through it last month and was amazed by how much i liked it. great look, too. it's like a marriage between wind waker and previous 2d zeldas...they really ought to put capcom on more zelda duties.
still trying to find all the necessary gear to play a proper round of 4 swords, though

a time traveling game like that would be kinda cool as an RPG, maybe along the lines of Deus Ex or something, where you can upgrade different parts of yourself. except you'd have to think carefully about what you upgrade because it could have an adverse effect when time traveling. like say you upgrade your vision or something so you have a better field of sight to see enemies. if at some point you travel back in time to when you upgraded your vision, the past version of you now has a better chance of spotting the present/future version of you.

BAM.

My girlfriend and I have ALL THAT STUFF!!! We have 4 GBA between us and the link cables...ALSO, we have the Gameboy Player for the GameCube and the cords necessary to play it that way!!! Not trying to brag, but yeah, we got that...
OlliRudi

even a linear variation on a time travel game like that(ie only certain set points that were lined up so you had to avoid your previous playthrough, the kicker would be that you wouldn't know when in your progress you were being "recorded") would be pretty damn sweet
tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on Jul 02 '09 at 2:42pm
or if they were doing it more non-linear, they could use an AI system like the one used in Oblivion where every NPC has their own random schedule. so say you travel forward from point A to point C, but then you decide to travel back from point C to point B, which happened between A and C, your past self would now be an NPC and have his own random schedule so you wouldn't necessarily know where he'd show up.

i think i just broke my brain.

...so, I'll be playing The Minish Vap on it, 'cause they took away the GBA slot on the new DSi!

rbtatcher, you lucky bastard! that generation of hardware is getting tougher and tougher to find randomly these days.

Man, i really loved the gba, it was like a stay of execution for snes-style action.... i have one of those non-backlit ones, i hardly ever play anything on it after i got a dingoo, though. it emulates most gba games perfectly and the screen is a lot cleaner

can you include yourself with your majora's mask? we can play together!
Tess Fondie
Tess Fondie on Jul 02 '09 at 2:47pm
Ocarina of time is still the all time best zelda game- major's mask felt like a really awesome side story. They really go into detail with everyone's back ground- so lots of character developement. Just finding all the masks is a pain in the ass.

Plus the boss battles actually arent that bad. You don't even need to get all the masks to get the ultimate mask if you dont want. Its much more fun to beat the final boss without the massive upgrade
Tess Fondie
Tess Fondie on Jul 02 '09 at 2:49pm
oh i hated windwaker. I felt like i was five again- there was no challenge in that game what so ever
OlliRudi
   OlliRudi on Jul 02 '09 at 2:49pm
as far as game characters go, i have a crush on anju. i like her better when she's the "chicken lady" in oot and minish cap though.

   tracerbullet on Jul 02 '09 at 2:52pm
i like adult Malon.
OlliRudi
   OlliRudi on Jul 02 '09 at 2:53pm
but windwaker just felt so awesome and fresh, despite being way too easy. that and the sailing, i guess that was the love it or hate it thing for most.

i wish there were more "bubbles" of old hyrule under the sea though, if they'd managed to suddenly give you access to a huge underwater overworld at the midway point instead of a fetch quest i think it'd be the ultimate zelda game
tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on Jul 02 '09 at 2:54pm
i still need to play windwaker *sigh*

pfft, the sailing is great! then again, i've lived by the coast for the entirety of my life so i guess i'm naturally drawn to that sort of thing

I love the ocean- i do not love pressing a button and waiting 5 minutes to get to my desitination just to pick up a shard of the triforce... and doing that over and over and over.

I swear that part alone took me like a week to get through because it was sooooo boring
iPear
iPear on Jul 02 '09 at 3:07pm
everyone's liek "lol I love zelda" but then I'm like 'HAVE YOU PLAYED THE ONES FOR GAMEBOY' and the'yre like 'gameboy, wut?" and I'm like 'YOU DON'T LOVE SHIT, YOUR LOVE IS VAGUE AND MEANINGLESS, THIS IS NOT LOVE, THIS IS NOT LOVE THAT YOU FEEL"
Tess Fondie
Tess Fondie on Jul 02 '09 at 3:08pm
I played seasons first, and then got bored with ages... I felt like it was basically the same game.

capcom makes the illest topdown zelda games.
iPear
iPear on Jul 02 '09 at 3:09pm
it was basically not in any way the same game! what are you talking about!? manipulation of time, the things you do in the past affects the future and all that jibber jabber. completely different items! completely different story! omg!

they're next, as soon as i find working copies! i became really curious towards them once i was through with minish cap. i've got oracle of ages, but it looks like the backup battery is busted... the only original gb zelda i've played through is link's awakening.

tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on Jul 02 '09 at 3:12pm
i haven't done much in whichever Oracle game i started (i'm doing the action-based one first rather than the puzzle-based one) because i began it right after i finished Link's Awakening, and it felt like exactly the same game since it was in the same style and stuff. so i'll get back to it at some point soon since i've taken a long break.

I loved Wind Waker, The shards at the end was alittle annoying, but the style of the game overall. Its by far one of my favorite Gannondorf models, and last fight in that game was epic.

I really need to get my hands on the minish cap, though.
Tess Fondie
Tess Fondie on Jul 02 '09 at 3:15pm
Epic? I killed Gannon in less than 5 minutes- my first try.

It was visually awesome though...
