**UPDATE i just added another viddy on youtube of some tchaikovsky for those of you a little phased by the insanity of the Ives, its a little longer and has a piano intro (theme and then variations) before I get goin', tell me what you think and comment on my youtube!

so yeah, i've had to put together some old video footage from 2005 for auditions recently and so id love to show off the fruits of my labor to you buds! The piece is insanely bizarre, see if you can recognize some tunes in it! its the second movement of the Ives piano trio and its titled TSIAJ (This Scherzo Is A Joke)

oh and im that curly headed, flailing muppet

enjoy!

i love cello!
do you know Apocalyptica
JuliusB
JuliusB on May 15 '07 at 7:58pm
lol, amazingly the piece was written in 1911! it incorporates over 50 american folk tunes, often distorted with altered rhythms and harmonic function. and to peater, Im not a performance major (we dont have those at columbia) I'm actually an architecture major but I'm in the music performance program (not any special designation) and i study chamber music and take private lessons at Juilliard.

oh and yes i have heard apocalyptica, they're the crazy finns! another humorous celloband that my friend was obsessed with in high school: Rasputina, 3 girls and pretty creepy

Wow. That's a pretty long time considering that you're almost 20.

That reminded me a bit of Bela Bartok's work.

I would have to completely agree with you on that one. Both composers are extremely interested in the musical roots of their surroundings, the songs that enter inconspicuously into everyday life. They both take these tunes with their specific cultural connotation and rework them, flipping them upside down, inverting them, feeding them into diagrams and generally dissecting our music heritage; frightfully cool stuff if you ask me.

Yeah, I agree; it's been taken apart and put back together, but differently. who is the composer? I'd like to look into it.

My bitter and socially awkward asian friend does not approve of your "contemporary classical", but I enjoyed this. Especially your, ahem, enthusiasm.

thanks for all the comments guys, it means a lot to me. Luca, you can tell your asian friend that it isn't contemporary because it was composed in 1911 but in case she'd like to listen to somethign more traditionally classical ive got another video i can post thats more traditionally classical or rather, romantic

You look nothing like a muppet m'dear.
I second anything along the lines of "wicked", "ace", "awesome", and "talented."
