During the past holiday, I was able to receive my dream gifts of a computer tablet and a Sketchbook Pro software. Now I'm thinking of upgrading to a computer laptop at a professional level. The only thing is I don't know a thing about computers except how to play games and use the internet. As an artist, what should I be looking for in a computer?

id suggest getting a desktop, bigger screens = more you can see when you draw. adobe software dont really take up much memory i think, although they may be optimised for certain graphic cards, but i don't think you need to worry about those. any ordinary run of the mill computers should be able to handle your needs.

you would probably need more disk space, so consider getting a few TB of hard disk space, since artists work with about 50 MB per file, and you'd want to keep backup copies as well. The worst thing that could happen is your hard disk crashing and you losing all your hard work.

I would recommend a IPS matrix monitor.

For the computer itself, look for RAM. If you're working with really big files, you're gonna need all the processing power you can get (8gb or more, I'd say).

oh and like agrimony said, get lots of storage space (internal or external)

A pc desktop with a nice monitor is more comfortable for this but if you have a pc for games surely you have a good pc, just see for get more ram, etc.
The new pc and laptops come with more than 2 gb of ram

good luck

1.- Lots of ram!
2.- The best CPU you can get (like: Intel core i7 Extreme or Xeon series.)
3.- (optional) this is mostly for 3d design o heavy rendering engines,
a high-end Graphics card for GPU rendering.
