the bananas we eat do not have seeds. the little black dots, in the meat, are aborted ovules. wild banana plants can have seeds on the other hand.

I thought I'd shed some genetic insight on those of you who are bored and are actually bothering to read this blog:

In regards to genetics, the bananas we grow are triploids (contains three sets of chromosomes). Because they are polyploids of an odd set, they have fertility problems due to confusion in chromosome pairing at meiosis (in fact, they create aneuploids). We purposely select for triploid bananas because the lack of seeds is beneficial to us. We do the same thing for watermelons.

Wild bananas actually have seeds, and are not triploids. We just grow bananas that way. Even if all the seedless bananas were killed by some viral strain, it would still be possible to simply select for them again using the wild (seeded) banana plants and a mutagen like colchicine.

Oh. And ipiatt is right. Fruit having sex is funny lol. Okay, I'm bored. Back to exam studying. Science ftw. Love the shirt :)
