They are nice, yes, they're funny, etc, etc..
But these text tees are really irking me.
They're cute and all, but why am i waiting 5-7 days for shipping on a shirt I could buy at Urban Outfitters or Wet Seal or somewhere?

I think, on the whole, I'm very disappointed by the mainstreaming of Threadless with these new prints.. I don't come here for conventional. Do you?

tesco
   tesco on Jun 12 '06 at 3:57pm
but some people do, zim, and you cant blame threadless for branching out a bit. they're still selling exactly the same sort of shirts before, only now there is a whole new style available. maybe when an unresistable slogan comes along you'll change your mind
Stevethegreat
Stevethegreat on Jun 12 '06 at 3:58pm
hell

I could take a Sharpie and a three dollar t-shirt and write clever things on my shirt

I can't take a clever slogan and make it actually look really cool

i agree. i like the new threadless select t-shirts, but the text ones are horrible... they are like shirts found at target or walmart

Perhaps Threadless are testing the waters with these new Type Tees.

I like the idea of the Select tees a lot.

steve,

http://talleming.com/pages/work/typeDesign/index.html

this is a type designers site that graduated a bit before me from LSU. The research that goes into a good font is incredible. It is most definitely an art and because of people like you it is becoming a lost art.

bummer.
Stevethegreat
Stevethegreat on Jun 12 '06 at 4:17pm
if I am building a car engine I require a great amount of skill, it's tedious, I need to make sure all the angles and everything are right

Is making a car engine art?

there is certainly an aesthetic element to creating a font but slapping a font on something and calling it "Art" doesn't make it art

it needs to be artfully used, often needs to be augmented, needs to be more effort than saying "OOH, this one looks good, let's write something clever in it"
Stevethegreat
Stevethegreat on Jun 12 '06 at 4:18pm
clearly I'm an idiot with no skills or talent or redeeming qualities at all and I obviously don't know anything at all
tesco
   tesco on Jun 12 '06 at 4:18pm
but a beautiful font doesnt need any further designing to make it anymore awesome. just the letter forms themselves are the art

actually, i agree with the fact that i can buy these message tees at any store in the world: at the mall, target or wal-mart. i do like the in case of emergency break dance. I'm not buying it. I can't. It just isn't unique. It holds no significance. It takes a lot longer to create some of the designs we see up here than it takes to type a message on a shirt using a font, doing a little kerning and tracking, and calling it a day. Honestly, the shirts are more like advertisements for the type foundry that sells the font. They are selling fonts. It is kind of like your favorite band that starts getting popular and then everyone says they are selling out. No they aren't, they're just doing what you or I would do, make money. And it isn't like they are completely going to phrases on tees. I think they saw that joy of text submissions and started thinking maybe they could do something with just type, however the joy of text subs did have artistic elements to them.

oh man, i made a font in my typography class last summer. so hard!!

i think it'd be awesome if some really crazy fonts came out of this!
Stevethegreat
Stevethegreat on Jun 12 '06 at 4:20pm
but the shirts are not about the letters but about the words and simply putting some words on a shirt (no matter the font) has always been a silly thing to do

No, rachel, i didn't read. I didn't take the time to.

"well, this is a company and not a club....hussies and gross people are technically allowed to wear whatever they want.

threadless is expanding. i keep saying, the more $ they make, the better things they can do/give to us. so don't sweat it so much!"

My concern is that the bigger threadless has gotten the more it seems to have forgotten its very roots.

What if its totally forgotten? hopefully this won't be a problem.

I agree with both sides here . making a font is hart and they can be beautiful .. but applying a font to a slogan doesnt make teh slogan art unless it enhances teh slogan ...but thats just my opinion
tesco
   tesco on Jun 12 '06 at 4:24pm
but the shirts are not about the letters but about the words and simply putting some words on a shirt (no matter the font) has always been a silly thing to do

well, to a typophile the shirts are about both letterforms and the slogan. seriously, from a shitty store like tshirthell.com all your going to get is Cooper Black and Helvetica and (puke) Impact over an over. With threadless at least you know you're getting some fresh and classy fonts.
