if i have a new laptop which we think we has a dead harddrive, can i just like... buy a new harddrive, pop it in, and it's good to go? how universal are harddrives for PCs?

depends on the PC as to whether you can 'pop it in'. This is more of a Maddingo question.

tracerbullet

yes. yes you can. hard drives shouldn't have drivers or anything.
tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on Nov 08 '09 at 11:27pm

i know nothing about this. but hi!
sonmi
   sonmi on Nov 08 '09 at 11:33pm
it's not suuuper new. one year old. but my sister owned it for that year and she has the magic touch of never installing security updates on it and having it get totally demolished by viruses :p

it went well, haya! it was pretty laid back. then we went to steve's, played drunken sorry, and ate gyros.

hi ben!

thank you BRIAN! and does $40 seem reasonable for a new hd?
asdfghaya
asdfghaya on Nov 08 '09 at 11:36pm
OMFG GYROS!! I hope they were from Oakland Gyros. Seriously. Best gyros I have ever had, ever.
tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on Nov 08 '09 at 11:37pm
how big is it?
sonmi
   sonmi on Nov 08 '09 at 11:38pm
oh man! no, not oakland gyros, though steve was also proclaiming those were good. we walked to this one place called "grecian delight". it was alright... though i only had fried eggplant sticks. which hardly had eggplant. so it was like fried friedness. it made me pass out.

Eas;ldkfjasd;lfkjas;dlj Oakland Gyros is one of my favorite childhood memories. Next time. Get one. Do it.

   tracerbullet on Nov 08 '09 at 11:40pm
yup, that's a good price for that size
sonmi
   sonmi on Nov 08 '09 at 11:40pm
i shall!!!! i don't think oakland gyros was too far, esp since steve lives by oakland, but it was slightly too far to walk.

as brian said, you can certainly swap in a new harddrive. all you have to do is make sure it's the right type of harddrive. if it's a laptop, then it's a 2.5" harddrive, and if it's a year old, it's almost guaranteed to be a SATA connector.

if you're in a super big hurry, go to your local computer supplies store (if there's an option better than Best Buy, go there). but if you have a few days to wait, i HIGHLY recommend www.newegg.com for almost all computer part purchases.

once you swap in the new harddrive, you will have to reload your OS onto it. you strike me as a mac person, and so if you had your old OS backed using Time Machine, restoring it to your new harddrive is a breeze. you simply have to partition the new harddrive (there's just a button to do that) and then restore

mmnow I want a gyro. good job, Julia.
sonmi
   sonmi on Nov 08 '09 at 11:42pm
yeah, we definitely have a few days! and i've actually purchased stuff from newegg before. it's a good place. i had forgotten about it!

yeah i'm a mac person, but i don't think that os stuff is an issue here. my sister pretty much gave us this laptop because she didn't want to figure it out, so we're just wiping it clean. and we have a copy of windows 7 to install on it. it will be cool if we got it working! but for now, it won't install anything, and makes weird clicking sounds everytime it tries to access the hard drive.

kevinwells on Nov 08 '09 at 11:43pm
oh, i forgot the title of this blog is "windows people", so ignore the last part about mac....

if your lappy came with a restore disc from the manufacturer, great. otherwise, you'll probably have to install a few drivers once you get the OS on there, but those should all be downloadable from the manufacturer's website

i too love cucumber sauce, which has always boggled me, 'cause in general i hate cucumbers.

though i love pickles.

my brain hurts itself.

why am i not in bed yet?

i used to hate cucumbers, but now i am a believer. YOU'VE GOT TO BELIEVE!

Oh man, I love cucumbers. they taste like cold. Its amazing.

sonmi
   sonmi on Nov 08 '09 at 11:53pm
lol @ taste like cold. it's true!

oooh. so... is there any limit to how big laptop harddrives can be? 320 gb in a laptop would be awesome
asdfghaya
asdfghaya on Nov 08 '09 at 11:55pm
i'm pretty sure there is some fact that talks about how the inside of cucumbers are some degrees colder than the temperature of the room. pretty sure.
kevinwells
kevinwells on Nov 08 '09 at 11:56pm
no, other than the fact that they just don't really make 2.5" drives in sizes bigger than 500gigs... do you want a 500gig one? if so, go with this which is $89.99 + free s/h..... technically one company makes a 640gig, but the price-per-gig is ridiculous
kevinwells
kevinwells on Nov 08 '09 at 11:58pm
btw, you can easily swap in a newer, bigger harddrive into your mac lappy you assuredly have laying around, too. margo's had a 80gig by default, so i swapped in a 320gig, used time machine to restore her OS, and it was like nothing ever happened but magically more room. gave her 4gigs of ram, too. both super easy to do. put her old 80gig in an external enclosure, and now she has a little 80gig portable just for fun

   sonmi on Nov 12 '09 at 11:48am
thank you for your help kevin!!! we are probably just going to go with a 320 gb.

and i didn't realize it'd be that easy to swap in a bigger hard drive for a macbook. we have an older model from 2007. i don't think it has time machine. that'd be cool though. we always have to delete files on it.

soooo new question:

i haven't used a pc in forever and have forgotten how to properly protect it against viruses. are they any recommended free virus software things i can download for it?

Steve, may I attend Oakland Gyros parties tambien?

Next time I go to Milwaukee I will demand that my sister take me there.
Torakamikaze
   Torakamikaze on Nov 12 '09 at 11:58am
of course haya

after we left the show we spent the longest time outside my car contemplating whether or not to go to Oakland... then we didnt.

grecian delight was the biggest disappointment this side of the mississippi.

annie ended up not eating the gyro i brought back because it was so subpar

there's a lot of free anti virus stuff julia
i don't know of any bc i steer clear of PCs at home
asdfghaya
asdfghaya on Nov 12 '09 at 11:59am
YOU SHOULD HAVE GONE TO OAKLAND. Always go to Oakland. always.

*sigh* they remind me of being a little kid and going to Milwaukee for my summers. they also remind me of delicious.
Torakamikaze
   Torakamikaze on Nov 12 '09 at 12:02pm
yeah, but by the time it was gyros time, i was much too drunkified for driving, and the walk is a bit far

plus, if we'd have gone right away julia wouldve hated me for experiencing it without her

this shows how unselfish i am
sonmi
   sonmi on Nov 12 '09 at 12:02pm
coo. i can do some research if i don't get any suggestions. i'm just afraid of downloading some free software that ends up being a virus in itself!

i'm glad i didn't get a gyro at that place. only fried fried.

shirtflirt on Nov 12 '09 at 12:03pm
my folks got an email the other night

Steve is a Good Man (tm)

Julia, lets get Gyros this weekend. Or imagine that we are.
sonmi
   sonmi on Nov 12 '09 at 12:07pm
oh nooo! you know, i never even realize how horrible viruses can be, to the extent that they can destroy a harddrive.

oh man haya! i will imagine we are. perhaps i will draw a picture of us eating gyros. i will be in appleton. perhaps i will have to find a gyro place there.
tracerbullet

the best free virus scanner is AVG. it's what i used when i had windows.
