Maybe it's me, but aren't a lot of the shirts like... plays on words in picture form, or some type of funny situation?

What happened to just putting good art on shirts?

Maybe I just want to see some good art that maybe it has a secondary meaning or something but isn't supposed to be funny.

I don't know, I mean I enjoy the funny shirts, but those I have I wear less than the straight-up style/artistic shirts because it seems that their appeal fades faster.

Anyone else feel the same?
Is it the puns/comedy sell best?

(BTW when I say artistic I mean well drawn, not those random lines and colours on shirts things)

Preaching to the choir here man. I completely agree with you and I've been trying to motivate that kind of change for a while now. I'm starting to get back to subbing, and I'd like to run a pseudo competition that emphasizes meaningful design.

i definately agree. While the funny shirts are enjoyable, they lose the appeal of the artistic shirts.

my two favorite shirts right now, Not a Pirate and Prepare for Fight, are without meaning and are simply cool designs on a tshirt.

the visual jokes score well, the puns score second, and the neat art shirts or those with open interpretation barely make the cut. actual functional aesthetic designs get like no respect. at least here with voters with no attention span.
comedy does sell, but i agree, i don't want to go out wearing a punchline every day

the ones i wear most are king's cobra and something we guess not but yes....and RGB and 4 color palette....and then maybe my own...but that feels gay.
not to offend any fags out there.

This is my main problem. Most of my designs are basically aesthetic and ornamental by nature. I attach a loose concept to a style and create based on my intuition or feelings. Since the work is personal and nobody cares about me, it pretty much falls by the wayside unless there is a really flashy visual involved.

Also, I rarely illustrate with a goal in mind because I don't want to end up disappointing myself. Those times when it's sucessful, I become overjoyed; those times where I fail, I feel as though I've wasted lots of time.

well yeah- it's always the things you really like that no one gets, and the things that you think are 'eh' that really catch on.
kayceislost
kayceislost on Jan 18 '07 at 11:43pm
very true. especially in critiques, as of late. something i just threw together and didnt really like, everyone else likes. ugh.

YES! A rule of thumb: the prototype you like the least, is the one the client will pinpoint and gush over.

and the internal eye-rolling ensues
travis76
   travis76 on Jan 18 '07 at 11:48pm
but then you know rest assured that you will always get work. save your good stuff for your niche market that gets you, and relax knowing that any shit you turn in to the client will awe them.

That's a very positive way to view the situation Travis. You just taught me something.

I'll hang on to that perspective, it'll help me out in this area.

there's a place for everything

i have some visual-pun shirts and some art/design - and they get rotated through based on how i feel that day, what color i feel like wearing that day, where i'm going (if i need to be "presentable" or not)...

i would like to see more "art-for-art's-sake" designs and wtf? abstract designs getting printed

also more variations in style - i like sketchy, chalk-drawn, and watercolor effects - anything that shows the hand of the artist

the clean vectored art look is fine - but more variety in what gets printed would be a plus

the in-your-face overdone i've seen it at the mall pre-teen humor "designs", anything that relies heavily on combining clip art with swirls and drips, or tracing/vectoring stock photos found with google, get really old really fast

Yeah I tend to domy best work for every client until they start asking for stupid changes, thats when I know to turn off my talent and just ride the job out and give them the shit they keep on insisting on. Otherwise its just too frustrating to deal with.
bananaphone
   bananaphone on Jan 19 '07 at 12:34am
and theres alot of good art t-shirts lately, especially the hogboy select and also the hills have eyes one, amongst others. So I'm not sure why you've chosen now to complain about it when its better at the moment than it has been.

likely cuz everyone has their own definition of "art" and "artistic"

also cuz my shirts are fading and I need new ones hahaha

oh and personally if you're like me and create something with meaning, I'll think I finally find someone that gets it, and they're all like yes that's deep and meaningful, but have pulled a totally different meaning/interpretation that what I had meant
nxmq
nxmq on Jan 21 '07 at 11:55pm
yes to more abstract art and just plain weird sketchyness.
MrDomino

The assertion that art is subjective I find to be fairly ridiculous, but I see where you're going. Understanding your audience is also part of being an artist.

Man I just checked out Matthew Woodson's page, and he is a ridiculously good illustrator.

"also more variations in style - i like sketchy, chalk-drawn, and watercolor effects - anything that shows the hand of the artist"

the prblem with this is you have to be extremely good with vector graphics in order to pull off a natural-looking watercolour look within the colour limitations...:)

I guess part of the appeal of "meaning" shirts is they elicit much stronger reactions, like, "HOLY TOLEDO, THAT'S CLEVER, MAN 5$$$$$$$$$" but the artsier ones are like "hey, that's kinda cool, if you look at it long enough.."

All about me
Finishing up my psych/bio degree at university. Why isn't it in something artistic? I dunno.

What I do know is that everything in my life I've been changing around, mixing up, trying something new. I hope to go out to B.C. after finishing up my degree (but now that's been delayed thanks to suckology) but trying something new is the most important. Went vegetarian little over a year ago too. Y? y not!?!

Creativity comes in spurts. grab hold.

More recent picture of me? OK here you go! Batman all the way! Wheeeeeeeee!!! (yes i scrounged for it, that's why it's in bad shape)
