I thought they just had 4 levels of hard/softness.

#1 softest - #4 hardest

Yeah, that's what wikipedia told me, too. But I don't think that's universally true. Phil told me so.

Oooh I like. I'd almost like to see what they look like without the uniform outline around them though?

I hated being told I was only allowed to use an H pencil at primary school. Everyone knew the B's were far more badass.

HB was the standard in my youth. But occasionally I'd venture into 2B territory. Yeah, I was handful as a kid.

makes sense. i dont remember F exactly, but its been awhile since ive bought a pencil. HBs have always been my go to for everything - its a perfect pencil.

Thanks corey. So americans definitely use these grades most and not #1/#2/#3 etc?

as someone who doesn't draw often, i've never heard of H or B pencils.

Corey nailed it. Everyone knows about #2 pencil (required for standardised tests), but has very little idea that there are others unless they buy art supplies.

I remember when I first got a set of drawing pencils for Christmas. The numbering/lettering system totally confused me (why, why, why were there letters?!)

But yeah. Common for art supplies; not for anything else.

my source was Schott's Miscellany, verified by lyrics from an Ice Cube track - You Know How We Do I.

if you wanna jack me on a lick, cause
I'm that fool from South Central
You think you stuck yourself, with a number 2 pencil
That's how I poke hot lead in yo' ass

i've only heard of a #2 pencil

nasmo on Oct 30 '09 at 11:17am
Sweet idea. Did you actually make this with the corresponding pencils? One thing sticks out at me, and this might just be an optical illusion, but I think the 3H looks slightly lighter than the 4H. And consider this another vote for sans outline.

   Tonteau on Oct 30 '09 at 11:18am
Cheers, Al. I think I'll add a brackets (#1/#2) etc.Just to make it obvious.
Tonteau
   Tonteau on Oct 30 '09 at 11:20am
Yeah, nasmo, all with the corresponding pencils, but I wasn't very cosistent with my shading. It was late and I rushed lots of it and then went over other bits, which doesn't make for a great look. I'll try this again, later.

We got into trouble for using 2b, it was hb all the way. Frackin' nazi primary teachers. Love this btw.

weird, i assumed that in canada we'd have the same sort of pencils as the states and apart from movies i guess, i've never ever come across a #2 or #1 pencil. always HB in school and the rest in art pencil cases.

I worked in art retail for 2.5 years. There are 2 systems. #2 corresponds to HB, and is the standard for all scan-tron tests, as well as the default hardness for most pencils.
You might want to exaggerate the gradation here, as the top row all loos the same shade to me, as does HB through 5B. maybe try to reduce the gradient within grades, so that the eye can better see the gradient across grades.

Yeah, I'm in Canada and I've never heard of or used a #1 or #2. I only know the line "standard #2 pencil" from American movies or something.
Our tests demand a "standard HB pencil".

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm not sure I'll make this into a t-shirt design. It was just an idea I had which I found interesting. I'll maybe get a broader selection of pencils and try to make a good fist of this.
