My girlfriend and I love board games but we're a bit bored (heehee) of the ones we have. Can you recommend some good two player ones that have a decent longevity.

General knowledge is no good, nor are word-based games, since we have different mother tongues.

At the moment we're digging this:

and we really want this:

Any more?

I'd recommend Torres, Ingenious and Lost Cities. Out of those three Lost Cities is the only pure 2 player game. Not very deep but fun. Torres works better with 3 or 4 but is perfectly playable with two.

Is the preference towards more modern board games? Otherwise, the first few that come to mind for me are checkers, chess, othello, and backgammon.

Rumis, is boss.

2-4 players.

Rumis reminds me of a game called Pueblo which I enjoyed a lot.

I guess so, yeah - we have chess etc. Still need to learn backgammon though.

Think Rumis is also called Blokus 3-d. It's bastard hard to get your hands on.

Man, I LOVE Blokus, even though I stink at it.

Sequence is also addictive. I stink at it, too, but it's still fun.

Stratego. Hands down my favorite two player board game. There is also a fun and obscure game called Scotland Yard, which can be played by two to six people.

I used to play this when I was young, in the late 80's early 90's. Incredibly fun.

Man, that's the dilemma my gf and I have. all the games we like to play involve other people.

Brian just taught me to play Rummikub recently.

It's pretty fun.

Beth (noodlezoop) has a legendary closet full of board games. I haven't seen her on Threadless in aaaaages, though. But if she's on your FB you should hit her up.

"Go" is fun and simple. Very basic, but very strategic as well.

You can find more about it Here

Morkki also mentioned lost cities, which is fun and quick. I think the average game lasts about 30-45 minutes.

Sequence and Rummikub are favorites, but I also like a good game of Scrabble. Sequence is the best of the three, though.

Not sure if this was mentioned already, but my grandparents introduced me to this a few weeks ago:

It's a 'travel' game: you try to impede the other's roadtrip by popping tires, putting a speed limit on them, etc.
It's fun once you get the hang of it, and the cards have a pleasantly retro vibe:

I guess the game itself is quite old.

Monopoly Deal is fun, but with 2 people you need to remove the two cards that let you steal an entire set of property.

Scrabble and Stratego are good.

Not sure how easy it is to find, but Word Spot is pretty fun.

Also, is the Phase 10 board game better than the plain 'ol card game?
Bramish
   Bramish on Jan 24 '12 at 4:52pm
Never played the card game, and as much as I love Scrabble and word games, it wouldn't really work with the two of us.

Some good looking ones mentioned though so far...

haha Mille Bornes! My parents have that exact set with the duck on the 50.

I guess Boggle is a decent 2 player, and there's always Jenga too.

Also, German Scrabble has a weird letter distribution - I'd have expected there to be more than one Z, Ü, Ö and Ä since they're all pretty common, but no. Interesting... verrry interesting.

I noticed that Carcassonne hasn't been mentioned. If you are not familiar with it, you should be! Works great with 2-4 players.
