Hey-o!

Normally I would've put the word out earlier, but this year I was a lazy bum about it. Anyhow, Lollapalooza weekend is upon us once again and if you're anywhere in the Chicago area and you're NOT going... well, that's just unacceptable.

I'll be there (with proverbial bells on!) along with a few others so if you're going, let it be known.

Here's my (tentative) agenda:

Friday, August 1
12:15pm - 1:15pm Holy F*ck (AT&T)
1:15pm - 2:15pm Rogue Wave (MySpace)
2:15pm - 3:15pm The Go! Team (Bud Light)
3:15pm - 4:15pm The Kills (MySpace)
5:15pm - 6:15pm Cat Power (PlayStation)
6:15pm - 7:15pm Bloc Party (AT&T)
7:15pm - 8:00pm Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks (MySpace)
8:00pm - 10:00pm Radiohead (AT&T)

Saturday, August 2
12:15pm - 12:45pm Margot & the Nuclear So and So's (MySpace)
12:30pm - 1:30pm Does it Offend You Yeah? (Bud Light)
2:15pm - 3:00pm Foals (Citi)
3:30pm - 4:30pm MGMT (MySpace)
3:30pm - 4:30pm DeVotchKa (PlayStation)
4:30pm - 5:30pm Explosions in the Sky (Bud Light)
5:30pm - 6:30pm Okkervil River (PlayStation)
6:30pm - 7:30pm Broken Social Scene (Bud Light)
8:30pm - 10:00pm Rage Against the Machine (AT&T)
8:30pm - 10:00pm Wilco (Bud Light)
10:00pm - 11:59pm Broken Social Scene w/ Yeasayer (Metro)
* Going to try to do halfsies between Wilco and Rage, if only because RATM is a nostalgic kick in the pants and Wilco is playing in Chicago every ten minutes or so. But then I might end up just taking off early so I can beat a hasty path to the Metro for BSS.

Sunday, August 3
11:30am - 12:15pm Office (PlayStation)
12:45pm - 1:45pm Small Town DJ's (Perry's)
1:45pm - 2:30pm Tally Hall (BMI)
3:30pm - 4:30pm Black Kids (Citi)
4:15pm - 5:15pm Iron & Wine (Bud Light)
6:30pm - 7:30pm Girl Talk (Citi)
7:15pm - 8:15pm The National (PlayStation)
8:15pm - 10:00pm Kanye West (AT&T)
8:15pm - 10:00pm Nine Inch Nails (Bud Light)
* I don't really care between Kanye and NIN since I've seen the former before (back at Lolla '06) and I'm not a huge fan of the latter, so I might split my time between both.

Hi Mike!

Priscilla, I will take lots of photos (if I can get away with being sneaky and getting my camera in) and report back.

But I hear Simon Pegg was at Comicon so I wish I could've been there too!

Everyone got to see famous people at Comicon except for me! I think because I'm too short. Next time I'm wearing stilts.

The Regina Folk Festival!

7:00pm - 7:30pm ROCK PLAZA CENTRAL

7:45pm - 8:30pm FINAL FANTASY

8:45pm - 9:30pm RUPA & THE APRIL FISHES

9:45pm - 10:45pm WEAKERTHANS

10:45pm - 11:45pm BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE

I'm only going for one of the three days, so unfortunately I'm missing out on Great Lake Swimmers....but for $35 it's a solid lineup.

Saturday is THE day. And the weather is supposed to be sunny (although up to 98!). Sunday is pretty weak for a closing day (which is normally supposed to be the best). I'm so excited for BSS twice in one day.

The Weakerthans are on Sunday as well, so I might try to catch that, although they did a show at my bar back in November and it wasn't that impressive.

I think MGMT and Explosions in the Sky are really the only two performances I'd really want to see

hope everyone has fun who is attending, as I'm sure you will!

i'd love to see radiohead again. MGMT would be great, and i bet RATM and NIN would be crazy fun. INITIALS!

I've never seen Radiohead before and they've been on my "to see" list for forever and day, so I'm happy as a clam in pants about that one. Even though we're supposed to get random thunderstorms tomorrow (boo!).

I'm probably most excited MGMT, Girl Talk (the new record is fantastic) and BSS (of course). I'm also looking forward to Bloc Party because I saw them when I shared this crazy night with my BFF, who is now living in the UK.

damn you, I was going to see BSS at the metro but it sold out before I could get my hands on any tickets.

Girl Talk gives a SUPER live show.

Day 1:

Rogue Wave - meh. Nothing to write home about.

The Go! Team - OMG! AMAZING! So unbelievably wonderful. Probably the highlight of the day.

The Kills - Not entirely my cup of tea, but they put on a good live show.

Cat Power - I love her voice so much.

Obama! - Haha, not really, although there's a rumor floating around that he'll be by to introduce Wilco or Kanye. I'm a bit skeptical because I think he'd be way too exposed with the lack of security there, but it remains to be seen.

Bloc Party - Pretty good, but it was crowded and I had these two obnoxious dudes near me who were trying to pick fights with the security staff. FYI, event security isn't "the 5-0!"

Radiohead - Really glad I got to see them and there were some wonderful moments, but I guess I was expected a bit more. Very mellow, but almost a bit too much so. Ah well, still glad I saw them.

Also saw (but did not get photos of!):

The Black Keys

Gogol Bordello

Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks

Day 2:

I got there a bit late, so I missed a few things I wanted to see, but I caught MGMT. They put them on one of the mid-size stages at the same time as Booka Shade and DeVotchka. Not smart. It was PACKED. Great show, but it was impossible to get photos.

Next I hit Explosions in the Sky, who were very good, but I couldn't get into it when it was so sweltering hot out. HOWEVER! They were performing at the Broken Social Scene stage, so I managed to get up front and camp out for that one. Despite that, I was able to hear and sort of see Okkervil River on the other side of the same field.

MOST IMPORTANT:

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE - As per usual, they were EPIC! My favorite band ever, especially live. Andrew Whiteman of Apostle of Hustle and Amy Millan of Stars were with them. The set was perfect and I love how "Major Label Debut" always turns into this crazy sing-along. The highlight of the day, definitely.

After that we left early and missed both Wilco and Rage Against the Machine so we could get to the Broken Social Scene aftershow at Metro early. It started late, but the whole band was milling around as we were standing in line waiting to go in. I, of course, was so excited but way too shy to say anything when they came by (I have a history of doing that).

SO GOOD.

Day 3:

Got there late (again) after sleeping in.

The Black Kids - Kind of fun.

Saul Williams - I'd never heard of him before, but we wanted to stake out good spots for Girl Talk, so we caught his entire set. He was phenomenal! Great message. And he closed with a cover of U2's "Sunday Bloody Sunday" that was pretty wonderful.

Girl Talk - Easily the highlight of the day. I was up fairly close to the front, though, and it was NUTS. I lasted about 20 minutes before I had to bail cause I was being shoved all over the place and I didn't want to risk my camera.

Mark Ronson - Meh. Caught a bit of his set on my way to Kanye. Not my thing.

Kanye West - I'm not a big NIN fan, so this was sort of an easy choice, but... he was kind of underwhelming. He'd been at Lollapalooza two years ago and I thought his performance was better back then. HOWEVER! His backup singer did launch into a fantastic cover of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" that made me pretty happy.

Yaayyy BSS were awesome! Their set was only about an hour long though.....so they promised to "come back soon and play like a 2 1/2 hour set...every song we know." Haha I frickin' hope so!

The lineup I saw looks the same, minus Amy Milan and plus Lisa Lobsinger.

I was just so happy when they played "It's All Gonna Break," which is my favourite song but I wouldn't have bet on them to play it in concert.

The Weakerthans were also awesome live...I'm not a huge fan but I can appreciate their performance. Except for this song, it's fucking great:

PS. Final Fantasy aka Owen Pallett is frickin' adorable! Such a delight to see him perform and chat nervously with the audience. I highly recommend his show.

All about me

I am Blythe. I am Canadian and tall and 26 years old. If you annoy me, I may threaten to kick your ass but I probably won't go through with it. Annoy me enough and I may get someone else to do it for me, though. I like lots of things, including (but not limited to) taking a ridiculous number of photos of anything I find even remotely interesting, the movie Garden State, getting lost in new places, going out for breakfast, going to shows, drinking dark beer, breaking in new jeans, sneakers and flip-flops, dancing like a FIEND, the color green and hockey. I don't like asparagus and people who write "your" in place of "you're" when it is meant to be the latter.

Thank you for your time.

I own a lot of shirts. 'Nuff said.
