Yeah, yeah, boring shit, I know...

So I'm moving to the States in a month, which means I need a phone and would like to get that taken care of before I get there. I've talked to a couple of people about this already, but I could use a few more opinions.

I need a decent cell phone provider who offers great coverage and decent rates. I do a lot of texting (internationally) and long-distance, which is pretty key. I'm going to be calling Canada and England quite a bit and I don't want $500 a month in overage.

In Canada there are a couple of good companies and a lot of craptastic ones, so weeding the evil from the more-evil can be tough.

The consensus thus far has been at&t or t-mobile. Does anyone have some great reviews or horror stories from these guys or any others?

Thanks, kids!

ive had alltel for like 6 years, and never had a problem with them...and their "circle" thing is great.

I've heard bad things about T-Mobile.

I have Verizon, but haven't a clue about international stuff with it... I tend to use calling cards.

Oh! But I think if you're calling Canada, it's free on nights and weekends or something.

i have verizon, i get service everywhere, the plans are good, and i think they have a decent international plan but as far as nation wide you can call anyone and there is no roaming

I AT&T. I don't know much about my plan, since my parents arranged it, but my mom travels outside the country a lot, so I assume they chose a provider/plan that has some international options. I've never really had problems with the coverage...I've always had the same provider, so I don't have a real basis for comparison, but I seem to get coverage in places other people don't. And I think the only roaming charges are if there are no towers anywhere nearby and it has to do some weird thing to make your call, so maybe see where they have the most towers?

Sorry for the incoherence...I hope any of that was helpful!

It depends on where you are moving to. I have cingular..or at&t I guess. In chicago it's pretty shitty. But when I go up around Minnesota and Wisconsin it works perfectly.

I have Verizon too. Not too sure about international rates and all that though.

try googling all the diff companies. their international texting/cal rates will be listed. canada prolly won't cost much, texting is usually a flat rate regardless of country.

oh and i have t-mobile. service does screw up alot. but the international stuff is pretty reasonably priced.

Hey Blythe... Nothing to do with your cell phone question, really (though everyone in my Wisconsin family uses Alltel and seems to like it), but I was wondering if you could give me the low-down on how you went about getting a work visa, etc. for the states. I'm looking to move to Wisconsin, myself.

I have US Cellular. It is one of the better ones in my area.

I don't call Canada though.

brilliant, thanks!

so i'm getting the impression that t-mobile is out. at&t or verizon would be good options. my current phone gets spotty reception and it drives me mental, so good coverage is key.

Cingular/AT&T rarely lets me down.

Conversely Cingular always lets me down. Fewest dropped calls my fanny. I also frequently get a voicemail days after it was left. That's crazy. And I can never forgive US Cellular for infecting my Comiskey Park with their brand.

i had at&t before and had a lot of dropped calls and didn't get signal in a lot of places.

i have verizon now, which is much better. i got a $5 texting plan which lets you send 1000 in a month i believe? I don't know if that includes international though.
sleepyfeet
sleepyfeet on Dec 09 '07 at 6:57pm
(that's $5/month)

I hate verizon, lack of sim cards, lack of proper service, being banned from the store (which was my father's doing), retarded customer relations... AT&T has been so good to me.
MrDomino

Yeah I have a lot of dead zones with Cingular too. Like, half of my apartment and the building I work in. I'm fifteen minutes from downtown Chicago, that's ridiculous. If I lived in the Arctic Circle I could understand.
sleepyfeet
sleepyfeet on Dec 09 '07 at 7:13pm
yeah at&t/cingular never worked on my school campus so i had to use my dorm phone and it never worked at home either. suckers.

apparently, $5 is 250 texts and $10 is unlimited, my bad.

I have T-mobile and I get good coverage in Boston and New York, which are the only places I ever really am. Can't speak about anywhere else, but I get service at times when people I know with Verizon don't. I don't know about international rates or anything... But their customer service is pretty good.

Verizon has best coverage overall. Period. Don't know about txting or long distance with VZW, though.

All about me

I am Blythe. I am Canadian and tall and 26 years old. If you annoy me, I may threaten to kick your ass but I probably won't go through with it. Annoy me enough and I may get someone else to do it for me, though. I like lots of things, including (but not limited to) taking a ridiculous number of photos of anything I find even remotely interesting, the movie Garden State, getting lost in new places, going out for breakfast, going to shows, drinking dark beer, breaking in new jeans, sneakers and flip-flops, dancing like a FIEND, the color green and hockey. I don't like asparagus and people who write "your" in place of "you're" when it is meant to be the latter.

Thank you for your time.

I own a lot of shirts. 'Nuff said.
