Slim, the gist is that most users download their torrents from public trackers, like The Pirate Bay or Mininova, and for most, these services will suffice. Oink, on the other spectrum, was a privately operated tracker, where users would need to be invited and have an account with the site to grab the torrents. Oink specialized in music, and had strict rules on what could be inducted to be a torrent on the site, which resulted in top quality and fast downloads on every album all of the time. Oink was taken down by a governmental raid, but other sites similar to it have spawned, and I figured the threadless forums would be a fair starting point to obtain an invite.

Yes, I've heard great things about what. My friend got in somehow, and tells me it's pretty much set up like oink, and you can even set the site's colors to pink and purple! lol. My friend tells me it's just starting out, but you can upload all your oink torrents (luckily i saved a good fifty of the most popular ones...man, i so wish you could use your ratio too...i was at 3.9 or something insane where i could download without sharing for almost a year and be fine) and in a few months it'll probably nearly match the quality and selection of oink. Now all that has to be done is him becoming a power user so i can get my ass back into the world of downloading. I refuse to go to the pirate bay and all other places now that i was totally spoiled by the incredibleness of oink. Which sucks b/c i haven't gotten a new album in like two months now, and it's wearing on me big time! If you get a place for invites, or if i do, i will be sure to send one your way and vice versa, deal?

Sounds good to me sir, I too have gone be the wayside with my album downloading, i need that aspect back soon!

Yes. I do not think the government cares one bit about the 180,000 previous users of the site. I think it's perfectly legal to ask for an invite to a torrent site. The legality probably cuts off at that line though :P

Yeah, they aren't going after the people who cloak themselves and ask for an invite, it's more about the owners of the sites right now. The government shutting down Oink will result in nothing, because NO MUSIC was downloaded from that site, as with the new ones. It just was a database of things to link to. Of course it's a technicality, but it's an important technicality. Especially since there are SO MANY bands i know about know that i have supported by going to their concerts and buying a shirt or telling others about through that site i would have never found any other way, or took the chance on buying it.

If you're still wondering whether it's up there with Oink, I certainly think so-- I've been able to find everything I need, from music to apps like Photoshop, Office, and Parallels. The stuff I listen to isn't too obscure, so your needs may be different.



As for invitations, they only give them to power users, i think. I had two, but they took mine away :/
