Design school...yay or nay?
I'm thinking of going into graphic design and/or web design, is it generally a good idea to attend a specialized school or attend a private college and join the design department? All input would be appreciated!

it depends on how good the design department is... im at a "design department" but we actually have a college of design at my university, but its an excellent program.

i personally just went to a public school and took a few typography classes through its sad graphic design program, and i feel like i gained a lot out of it. i'm guessing other places would be much better design-wise. but i also like having the general liberal arts degree in case the art thing doesn't work out.

Don't go to a small non-art specific school. There will be a digital art/design program but it will suck.

I've gotten some responses from an admittedly not design oriented forum, and I'm not feeling them. Are these folks wrong?



Work for free in a design studio for a summer. Its cheaper than school and you'll learn more. And if you have talent, you will likely get a job out of it.



Save some money. Go to the library. School means little in the design field.

private school cost a ridiculous amount of money, ill have somewhere around 100grand to pay off in student loans when i graduate, but i believe its worth it.

my aunt whose a established artist always advised me to go to a school and do art, not go to an art school.

go to school. You wont learn just meet very intresting people.
