Anyone know anything about these? For some reason my work is blocking the IP address of one of the websites I frequent, and it was suggested to me to try it...but I don't really know what the hell I'm doing. Is it safe?

Fyi...it's not a naughty website or anything. I have no idea why it's being blocked.

if you don't know your proxy server, i don't think you could "try it"

if computers were homes, then each house would have an (IP) address. a proxy server is basically the block/neighborhood that the houses are located in.

i know but i'm not especially inclined to help people circumvent IT restrictions.

you should make an inquiry to your manager as to why the site is blocked... if their is a valid work related reason to go there.

if not you should learn about IT and then get a job in IT cause then you can do whatever you want =p

well...there are websites that offer proxy servers to bypass filters on school/corporate/whatever computers.

sorry there was only 1 post when i replied, lol.

It's not a work related site, but we do have free internet access besides the obvious blocked sites like porn/gambling/etc. I dont really want to ask about it though. It's an aquarium forum if you're wondering, not trying to look at porn or anything. :P

well... they are called

Anonymous proxy

In using a proxy server (for example, anonymizing HTTP proxy), all data sent to the service being used (for example, HTTP server in a website) must pass through the proxy server before being sent to the service, mostly in unencrypted form. It is therefore possible, and has been demonstrated for a malicious proxy server to record everything sent to the proxy: including unencrypted logins and passwords.

By chaining proxies which do not reveal data about the original requester, it is possible to obfuscate activities from the eyes of the user's destination. However, more traces will be left on the intermediate hops, which could be used or offered up to trace the user's activities. If the policies and administrators of these other proxies are unknown, the user may fall victim to a false sense of security just because those details are out of sight and mind.

The bottom line of this is to be wary when using proxy servers, and only use proxy servers of known integrity (e.g., the owner is known and trusted, has a clear privacy policy, etc.), and never use proxy servers of unknown integrity. If there is no choice but to use unknown proxy servers, do not pass any private information (unless it is properly encrypted) through the proxy.

In what is more of an inconvenience than a risk, proxy users may find themselves being blocked from certain Web sites, as numerous forums and Web sites block IP addresses from proxies known to have spammed or trolled the site.

network admins with skillz will block access to these types of proxies

personally i get quite agitated if people attempt to circumvent blocked site restrictions...

by agitated i mean i throw chairs at them....... (not really)

I'll admit I use proxies from time to time at work. To be fair, they block the stupidest things. Like the site I use to pay my student loan (and before one of you gets uppity, no I don't use the proxy for that, I just think it's stupid they blocked it)

You can still get uppity and not know why. It's fun

Meh i don't really want to mess with it. Sucks that I can't access that site though. Jewstice's link puts different info in my address bar but doesn't seem to change anything....

it would be very stupid indeed to make payments or do online banking or whatnot via proxy

but ohyouthealher seems to be aware of that already.

shirtflirt on Feb 06 '07 at 3:07pm
well, since you say that, dingo, if i'm online banking from home, is that not a good idea too?

eh... as long as you are taking proper precautions (securing your home network / connection)

making sure you are not being phished

practicing safe computing practices (i.e. making sure you are free of mal/spyware)

it is probably ok..

a malicious proxy could fully grab all your personal info however.
