I've always used Win-doze but just made the jump to Apple with the purchase of an iBook. Wanted to see what everyone used.

Although There a VERY select few things windows does well, Mac is the bomb when it comes to alm ost everything else. Most of Mac's downsides are the fact that everyone lese uses Windows, not because it is any inferior

Mac can be cheap if you buy the mini which can get the same capabilities as the other comps

mini is pretty cheap for a mac but emachines are even cheaper.

Dunno, only the end result counts, both worlds have their advantages and I've seen this debate so many times before and probably will in the future.

I use a PC, but would like to have a Mac, just because I hate Windows, basically. I used a Mac in classes years ago, and while the feel is a bit dif, for using programs I don't know how theyre different.

The hardware limitations on Apple computers eliminate them from the competition as far as I'm concerned. Besides, I'm not going to pay more money for some faux corporate cool. Apple sells on their looks and common ignorance rather than intrinsic qualities. Linux PC is the way to go. You get the majority of the Windows hardware spectrum and you have the peace of mind knowing you don't have to lease an OS from a company that embodies everything that is wrong with corporate America.

PC... because it God Damn well rocks..

maybe**** maybe next year when apple ditches the weaksauce G5 and G4 procs I might consider getting one of the Intel x86 macs i'll take another look.

but I like building my own pc's and since apple dosn't seem likely to allow that.... who knows.

i built my own Athlon64 system w/ a Gig of ram a Geforce 6800GT video card DVD burner /2x 160GB harddrives and 2x 19" monitors (one 19" CRT and one 19" LCD) for ~$1600

Why would someone get 1 LCD and 1 CRT for a dual screen setup? that seems weird..

Anyways, I use a G5 PowerMac, of course. w/ 2.5 Gigs of RAM, which is waay overkill, but oh well. hahaha

~~

because I got the CRT first (2yrs ago) and the LCD more recently I just listed them because the $1600 bucks includes basically all the parts that make up the current system (alot of which were purchased at different times)

but that said.. you ** might get a CRT and a LCD for gaming (CRT's are basically still better for games ...LCD's are getting better at games all the time but still CRT's are a bit better... However LCD's are WAY Better for websurfing / text ...etc much less eyestrain.)

so you might set up your system w/ a crt monitor you use while gaming and a LCD for everything else.

macs are a waste of money. you have to buy everything special for them.

i use a custom built comp:

Pentium 4 3.0GHz CPU
1GB DDR2 RAM
Nvidia Geforce 6600GT Graphics card w/ TV-Out
Creative Labs Audigy2 ZS 7.1 Sound card
250GB Western Digital Hard Drive
16x DVD Burner
Windows XP Professional

honestly I don't consider piece of mind and seamless usability a waste of money. You may be very happy with your PCs but we are very happy with our macs...they each do the job...so what if ours are more sexy? ;)

2003 Jan design Powerbook G4, best system i've used so far.
Use to have a PC Dell and it was useless, it got a whole buch of std's.
Now I had to buy everything for that, it didn't even have a cd-drive?
There's nothing wrong with a my pc for making dsp music but it was a brickshit-house and I almost broke my foot carrying it. pc to me now is a dirty word.

oh please...

you mac peeps go point a desk fan at your iMac G5's before they overheat and fry

PC's are hella faster than Mac's the G5 is a joke that is why apple is dropping it for Intel.

as far as spyware goes... it's not hard to avoid, I admin a small network (30ish) machines at work and due to a reasonable desktop security program and user rights management we have Zero spyware.

At home I have 6 PC's (Primary Domain controller + secondary DC + 4 desktops .... plus a varible number of laptops /relatives computers clients PC's...etc)

I have a hardware firewall at home and once again have administrative templates ..etc that keep teh less computer savy in my home from accidently fucking anything up...
..anyway blah blah blah

but i have had Zero spyware problems on my home computers (other than fixing a couple relatives PC's that got brought over and some clients computers ..but hey that's just EASY Money for me). Zero Virus infections on my computers (other than a test machine i infected w/ some stuff intentionally for testing purposes).

but seriously the windows thing aint so hard turn on the damn firewall in XP (or better use a more robust firewall like Kerio Personal Firewall) use a updated antivirus (I use AVG antivirus...they have a free version) don't open weird email attachments or filez someone just sends you over IM and stuff you will likely be fine.

I've used both & am a staunch PC user. There's so much mac snobbery out there & as someone else mentioned, it's all about image these days rather than performance. Nothing beats a custom built PC for versatility & value for money.

see i have to disagree with that. while i do hate mac snobs i've also used both and i'd rather the precision engineered dependability over the backyard hack job. i can't hurt a mac, whereas i've ruined many a pc.

as far a precision engineering....

look here:
http://www.macnewsworld.com/story/45900.html

my backyard "hack job" has the proc running at 45c under full load w/ the included stock AMD cooler that came w/ teh CPU... the rated maximum tempature is 70c.
karena@magicjelly
   karena@magicjelly on Oct 18 '05 at 2:30am
Yeah mine's no backyard hack job..I had it custom built to my specs by a really reputable dealer from quality parts & I've never had a problem with it...I can upgrade without it costing me an arm & a leg too. I've heard on good authority the graphics industry here in Aus is about 50/50 PC/Mac these days. PCs may not look so pretty as a rule, but they do the job & that's what matters. At the end of the day, when you see a piece of quality work, there's no way of telling whether it was made on a PC or Mac...they're just tools after all.

dude, I appreciate that you love your PC (like I stated) but you kind of proved my point. It took you like 3 paragraphs to tell me how you avoid spyware and that's with your "higher" knowledge of computers.

I'm just saying that with my mac I avoid spyware by just turning it on... I've never had to run anti virus soft ware in 5 years and trust me I am not carefull on line at all. about the only precaution itake is not opening strange attachments.

you also mentioned Macs switch to intell chips...great! if it makes the possiblity of a G5 laptop a reality because they run cooler then Im all in.

I honestly hope apple starts picking up some market share...just so macs will be worth teh bother for virus writers ...not that i like computer viruses but wiping the "we don't get viruses" smirks off all the mac users faces would be damn priceless...

Since the mac community seems to have about zero collective knowledge of comupter security a nicely crafted mac virus could about wipe all y'all off the net. (and it can be done ... there are Plenty of BSD vulnerabilities to mess about with).

anways you guys will get a faster laptop but it won't be a G5 it will be running a intel chip .... initally apple will support the G5's and the Intel Mac's ...but soooooooooooner or later apple will stop supporting the g5's forcing y'all to drop another 4K on a shinny new Mac... then two months later charge you $100 for an incrimental OS update.... BRILLANCE =) oh and you guys will probably need a ipod inviso by then too

so much anger i sense... seriously are you so angry? wishing viruses on mac users? (i have nothing against you personally) why is it that this conversation usually deteriorates into a PC user getting really pissed of? it also always comes back to price...why do you care what I choose to spend on my computer? alright...it's too late for this. respond if you like I'll probably read it but this is becoming old. I mentioned spyware because it is a problem that faces PCs more than mac/ No fault of pc users but it can't be denied. I'm glad that you know how to avoid it and I may be as ignorant as you say but if necessity is the mother of invention then a mac user can not be blamed for a lack of knowledge when it comes to virus protection like a mountain goat would have no knowedge of seat belts or condoms. it's just not that relevent...yet. One day there may be a need but today there is not.
