Last thrusday I was sitting perfectly still at a red light when an old woman chose to drive directly up my arse. I've just found out my insurer isn't prepared to repair the car, which means I need to get a loan and buy a new one.
While this is a colossal pain in the arse I'm excited to be car shopping. I would appreciate suggestions for my new ride. What do you see me in?
No Oscar Meyer Wiener cars please. Batmobiles considered.

UPDATE:
I caught a bus up to sydney this morning and drove him in this. I give you Kermit the Hulk.

and as an unexpected bonus it came with a handsfree phone kit installed, so now I can just speak into the ether like Captain Picard.

The Scion FR-S looks pretty cool, and I think is supposed to be far more affordable than some of these other out of reach options (out of reach for me anyway). Not sure if they're out yet, or not.

that's a pretty cool looking "device" but i dunno if i'd call it a car. is it electric? it can't be the production model with so little clearance in the wheel arches.
NCowick
NCowick on Feb 14 '12 at 1:23am
Ha, no it's not electric. You're right about these being pics of the concept prototype. It has a little more clearance in the production model pics. Not saying this would be top of my list or anything. Just think it does look pretty cool.

You seem to like the Ford brand. The Ford Mustang is a cool looking reliable car that you can fit a small family in. I can see you in a Mustang.

I like the toyota FT-86 it's supposed to be some more modern "reinvention" of the old toyota celica. Toyota partnered with Subaru to create it and both toyota and subaru are releasing their own slightly differently styled model.

If you wanna be more practical... I'm not sure exactly what car models you have down there. But I found this on a google search

Honda Civics are nice practical little cars. I had one back in college and it was a really comfortable little car. I also rear ended someone in it about 45mph (totally their fault.. some old people seriously shouldn't be allowed to drive... grrr you don't stop stone cold at the last second in the middle of a hwy with no blinker to indicate you might want to stop and turn) and walked away.

Here's what I'm driving, and I love every second of it. It's a 2011 Honda Fit Sport

Its a really fun drive, TONS of interior space and cupholders, as well as great gas miliage, I'm averaging 35mpg mixed city/highway

Right now I am on the fence about getting a 1957 studebaker transtar that has been put on a 1999 toyota frame - it is pretty wicked but I am worried about it being a huge mess

looks pretty badass - and its a 5 speed, not road legal though so Id have to do some work

i totally considered the last Interceptor. that black studebaker looks badass. Coincidentally my brother in law just wrote off a '38 studebaker pickup he'd been rebuilding for years.
stair car would be fun. a Fiat Abarth would be awesome, until I had to drive the family the 400 miles to visit my folks.

i'd never touch any of the cheap korean things. hyundais, daewoos, kias. no thanks.
i did briefly consider a Skoda though. they've become good cars since Volkswagen bought them, and they're still cheap to overcome their traditionally bad name.

Hyundais and kias have become 2 of the most reliable brands. They're no longer the "cheap" cars, of yesteryear.

I have a Honda Fit and it's great, but while the highway mileage is fantastic, if you switch to exclusively city, it plummets pretty quickly. Really good cheap car, drives well.

I wonder how small and crappy the next generation of cars will get, I mean at some point cars and trucks are going to be hot wheels sized and get 400 miles to the gallon
maddingo
maddingo on Feb 14 '12 at 6:08pm
lol..since my last car was a volvo station wagon i drove and loved for nearly a decade... one thing is clear I don't need a franken Studebaker to compensate for a small dick..

the chevy is nice looking and goes pretty well.. the engine is small 1.4 w/ turbo but ..meh..it will gladly get up and move in Socal freeway traffic.

to be sure if you want to pretend you are in Too Fast too furious all day long it may not be the car for you but for getting about in a reasonable manner @ a reasonable price point..pretty good

I wanted a new car near as possible to $20K (or less) and that is what i got.. I like the looks vs. most of the other options in the price range so yeah.

it was also made in America by American autoworkers so that was a huge plus in our considerations of what to buy.

40+ mpg room for 4 adults ..what's not too like ..trunk big enough for several bodies also ..but don't use it for body moving as the fucking onstar basically knows where the car is at all times...oh well.

maddingo on Feb 14 '12 at 6:10pm
you can (i know) get five adults in the cruze..but I wouldn't recommend it ..get a bit cozy in back

4 is fine 5 is ok for a short trip if necessary.

I wouldn't call the Fit crappy by any means. Sure, it's probably not suitable for Alaska, but my brother has taken his across the country three or four times and currently lives in Northern Vermont, after spending a year in Minnesota without issue. So it's not like it can't handle a little weather.

My daily driver is a 97 Honda Civic HX that gets 39 MPG overall. 90% of my daily commute is on the freeway. I kept looking for this specific used car model until I found one that I liked. These cars are very well made, very reliable as long as you maintain the car properly and take care of it. I bought this car from the original owner and it was very well taken care of. These cars have a timing belt in them that needs to be replaced every 90,000 miles according to the Honda dealer. I had the Honda dealer replace the water pump and timing belt in my car due to I plan on driving this car over 300,000 miles. I have 192,000 miles on this car right now and it runs like new.

I have owned two Chevy Cavaliers. My first one was a 1997 that I drove to 227,000 miles and sold it still running good with everything working great in the car. These cars have a timing chain in them so no need to replace it which saves money, but the water pump went out on me at 175,000 miles. I replace that and kept on driving it.

I currently own a 2003 Chevy Cavalier which actually has a peppier engine in it than the 97 had. This engine also has the timing chain in it. The only problem I have had with this car was the fuel pump went out at 165,000 miles. I replaced that myself and now have 172,000 miles on this car. This car runs and drives like it is still brand new. This car is fun to drive. I plan on replacing the water pump on this car soon and driving this over 200,000 miles before I sell it. This car gets 30 MPG.

Chevy made the Cavalier, replaced that model with the Cobalt and then replaced that model with the Cruze. I have not driven a Cobalt or a Cruze, but a friend told me the Cruze he drove was extremely nice. Chevy has made some very reliable cheaper cars in the late 90's on up to now.

Another car I know quite a bit about is Lexus. I bought a used 1992 Lexus LS 400 that had 293,000 miles on the original trans and engine. This car ran fantastic even though it had not been very well maintained. I bought another used 1992 Lexus ES 300 that had 245,000 miles on it and it ran great. This car had not been perfectly maintained either. I bought a 1993 Lexus LS 400 that was almost mint and was always garaged that had 202,000 miles on it. That was an extremely nice car with a powerful engine.

One thing I know about these older Lexus cars is the transmissions starts slipping or go out around the 240,000 mile mark. An owner that does proper trans service intervals will get more mileage out of the transmission than this though. The engines run far longer than that, but do have a timing belt that needs to be replaced on them.

Long story short is if you found a clean well maintained Lexus with under 150,000 miles on it then the car easily has over 100,000 miles left in it. These cars are extremely reliable with proper maintenance. The Lexus is my favorite dependable luxury car brand hands down.
