i just got a new computer and i formerly used outlook express to download multiple accounts to one inbox, but i'm looking for a new way to do the same thing. what's everyone else use? do people even do it that way anymore?
i want something that actually alerts me when i have new mail to any of my accounts, without having to check multiple sites manually.

I use windows Live mail. But Its kind of a pain in the ass because for some reason it multiplies the emails from one of my accounts to 3 emails of the same thing. I don't know why it does that.

yeah, I'm not really helping... you should probably call your IT guy.

how does windows live work exactly? when you get an email does it give you an alert on the taskbar or something?

do you have a mobile device? for example I have all my accounts on my ipod touch so it alerts me if i have mail in an account that i normally couldn't be bothered to check. i know thats not the answer you were looking for but it may be a different type of solution?

yeah that's an idea, but it won't help me transferring artwork back and forth with clients. i'd still need to go to the pc for that.

I would think that Thunderbird would be a good choice since most of what Microsoft touches is frustrating and bloated.

will Thunderbird complain if i'm using Chrome? i gave up firefox for some reason and don't remember why. i agree it's best to avoid MS though.

Chrome is a memory hog. I switched back to firefox because it doesn't open 19 processes named chrome.exe and us tons of memory for each.

Not sure about compatibility between Chrome and Thunderbird though.

If you like chrome, you can get gmail to receive all your emails in one place. I'm not 100% sure but i know it can do it.

i use mac's mail program... makes it really easy... but if you don't have a mac then Windows Live Mail is the way to go

I just forward my other email addresses to my main gmail account. I also create a filter/label for all mail from those addresses so I know what's what. Gmail is very good for organizing.

I used to use Thunderbird, but I got tired of only having access to my email on my home computer. I much prefer doing everything through a browser now.

Jeanette, if you go to your gmail settings, under Accounts and Import, you can add other addresses to send from. There's also a setting to automatically reply from whatever address the email was sent to.

sounds like i should get gmail then, even if it feels ridiculous solving my multiple account problem by adding another one.

I just have my other email accounts forward all the mail automatically to my gmail account.

I just forward it all to gmail. which isn't an issue anymore because my school email is kaput and no one sends anything to my website anyways.

does gmail give you live alerts when you receive mail or do you have to check periodically?
ninety-nine
ninety-nine on Dec 13 '11 at 2:55pm
Yes, Windows live gives live alerts, it has a little icon in the bottom right corner of the task bar that dings when you have mail. you can set it to check it hourly, or every five minutes.

I dont know about gmail. Mine doesnt but I probaby just havent downloaded that add on.

I just created a new profile in TBird for a webmail account I rarely use, I was always wondering if I could do that. Verdict: yes. No need for gmail. Yet. The problem of access away from home is getting more tedious all the time though.

Also, you use Outlook express? Man, do you live dangerously.

i went for gmail in the end, but i haven't received an email all day so either i didn't set it up right or it doesn't do what i wanted.

yeah G-mail. I mean, I have to log in to check email (don't have a desktop based system like Outlook or whatever), but I have all of my school email forwarded to my Gmail account. You can even reply with the same address, so like, if your work related stuff goes to your HotStud44@gmail.com, you can still reply as MisterBusiness@serious.org.

G-mail is the best. You can redirect every email adresses as you want on it , and as Bio bot said, you can reply with the same email adress. It's very easy and I havent seen anything more practical

yeah gmail is what i've been using and it does the job. it's not perfect, but it's ok. it bugs me that you can't see in the inbox which emails have attachments, and then you can't see the attachment in the email body, but it's working ok.

it actually does show which emails have attachments but they were silly and put it at the far right of the subject so it's harder to spot.

There should be a paperclip on the right side for messages with attachments

additionally, if you expand an email thread, there's a paperclip on the message that has the attachment in it
