they're not keen to make predictions since the last time they tried in 1979 they said South Africa and it hit australia. they don't want to look foolish.

I'll keep a lookout for it

I can understand why they had trouble predicting it... them satellites move pretty darned speedily.

But yeah. There's a 1/3200 chance of a person getting hit by the debris... so if something strange falls out of the sky, don't try to catch it.

Portals. Or it will run out of gas right before it hits the ground and stop mid air.

And I'd rather see a bus the size of a satellite, frankly. Though in this case, of course, they're pretty much the same.

Can someone who understands probablility explain to me what 1 in 3200 means? They take into account that there's 6 billion people in the world right? It's not like they're saying every 3200th person on Earth is going to get hit by a bit of this, yeah?

I normally miss the bus anyway so I should be fine.

I other news, I saw the Columbia Shuttle explode in the air at a soccer tournament. Everybody just stopped and had no idea what to do.

SJ, I thought it might sound wrong written that way. I suppose it should say that there's a 1/3200 chance that one (or more? IDK) of the 6 billion people on this earth will get hit by a piece of debris?

Goodness knows how they worked it out though. If they can figure stuff like that out then they SHOULD be able to work out where it's gonna land.

Also... Frogs? Really?

Off topic, but we're actually about to hit 7 billion people, which is pretty staggering to increase the population of earth by 1 billion people in 12 years.

Ugh 7 billion already? It's like with so many people in the world now we think disasters like earthquakes are getting more frequent or worse, but really people are just living in larger numbers in more precarious positions. With an extra billion people for falling space crap to aim at, it's only a matter of time isn't it.

they're saying now that it's supposed to clear north america. guess that means you have a higher chance of taking the bus satellite in other continents now.

SJ27 on Sep 24 '11 at 9:43pm
On the probablity thing, this article says that the probability it could have hit a given individual is 1 in 21 trillion. I wonder why no one was reporting that number as widely as the 3200 one, because it sure makes me feel a lot safer.
