my dad insisted i order him a copy, and it's about the worst quality print i've ever seen from threadless.
i'd come to accept that they fucked up by not printing the foil as intended, but this isn't even as good as a regular shirt. it's all pixelated and the ink is full of tiny pinprick holes, as if it was printed through a screen door instead of silk. maybe that's another symptom of the simulated process they used to achieve the butt ugly grey gradient that took the place of the intended foil, and the colours are really harsh and cheap looking. either way i hate it. i hope nobody else is as disappointed as i am.

I know the feeling, man, sorry to hear it

foil wouldn't have done this justice with all the gradations you have imo but it sounds like the separator fucked it all up

   d3d on Jun 10 '09 at 2:47am
rob, there weren't meant to be any gradations. all those grey gradient areas represent where the foil was meant to be, and i explained that in my email to them but they just forgot to do it. it should have been regular flat colours with some foil areas.

thanks man, that helps.

on the plus side i also got the mcbess select in the same parcel and was thrilled to discover the little guitar on the back of the shirt. that was a fun surprise. and it's a great shirt.

sucks dude. if its any consolation- i'm not impressed with threadless' foil inks. the rainbow foil square on my hadrian shirt came off completely after 3 washes.

Leon, I bought it and it's nowhere near as bad as you think it is. It's still an awesome illustration and personally, I wouldn't have liked it as much if they'd put foil on it.

I hardly ever buy Selects at full price, but I'm glad I got yours.

squatterjohn on Jun 10 '09 at 3:41am
They'd sold out of mediums when I bought it and now they've sold out of all guys sizes. I had to buy a small I don't know how that will work out. I'm wearing a small AA tee right now and it looks OK but I don't know, I can feel that I'm wearing it. But serves me right for waiting for a sale that never happened or the exchange rate to get better or something. Anyway, it sold out so quick at full price too that it definitely deserves a reprint and it should be reprinted properly this time with the foiil and everyone who bought it now should get a free replacement.

i'd need to see another sim process shirt to be sure, but i'm pretty convinced most of the problem with the quality is due to sim process being used, when it was completely unecessary. even if they'd just printed the crappy gradient parts in a flat colour and all the others in the spot colours i'd nominated it would have looked a lot better.

i don't think you can print gradients in 'flat' colour when you aren't squeegeeing by hand :\
TheInfamousBaka
TheInfamousBaka on Jun 10 '09 at 9:44am
I have Folie A Deux (Select), which is sim process, and it's kinda got that grainy holy look you're talking about. I still absolutely love it, but the quality isn't the greatest that's for sure.

Sucks about your print. :(

I kinda feel the same with buko's artic howl.. Maybe that's what happens when it's sim process on dark shirts
ginetteginette
   ginetteginette on Jun 10 '09 at 9:55am
with sim.process on dark shirts, don't they have to print white underneath the colour? sounds hard to me :s
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Jun 10 '09 at 10:08am
I thought they said simulated process works better on dark colours in the submission kit? Or maybe I've got it backwards. Band t-shirts (like the kind for 80s metal bands not those arty indie bands who rip off Threadless artists) are always sim process and always on black. You can really feel the ink on them but so maybe there is an undercoat.

Personally I think simulated process always looks a bit shit. And that's fine if it's supposed to be simulated process but since it wasn't then it's bad and especially because it will look bad by comparison to the rest of the design.

that's the point, this wasn't meant to have gradients. the gradients in the preview are only meant to show where the foil goes. the actual design was all spot colours.

Robsoul

foil starts coming off after several washes and when you use foil, you can only apply waterbased inks for all the other colors, otherwise the foil clings onto outside areas. Additionally, foil is crap for precise and detailed images.

still you had something in mind and it didn't happen according to your wishes, which is what the point of a select is about.

I'm pretty sure they'll put mine on heather grey.... damn you, craig, damnnn you

I think he meant take out the gradient altogether and print it as a solid color.

i feel your pain leon

one of my prints was botched pretty bad

I have not mentioned it, well cause It's too late to do anything about it. But on your select.... you should be able to do another -

thats what I think - selects should be perfect no matter what
olie!

I kind of agree I think. . .

I never made a blog 'cause I didn't want to whine but I was also pretty bummed when they shrunk my keeping it simple design to a tiny chest placement when it was supposed to take up most of the shirt.
On the other hand, they are paying us handsomely for the rights to our designs on shirts to do whatever they want with it, so if they want to change the look that's their call, not ours.
Still I do agree that Selects should be given more care and consideration to cater more to the designer's vision than a regular shirt. That's what makes it a Select.
But that's life. Probably nothing can really be done at this point.
kashlen
kashlen on Jun 10 '09 at 2:44pm
I love keeping it simple...and I agree with you that your intended placement would have made a big difference.
