Staffell's Word Cup Tournament!

24 people in a tournament, which means - if you didn't get involved this time around, apologies - but don't worry! it'll be back.

1st prize = tshirt of your choice

THEMES ARE AT THE TOP OF EACH GROUPING

RULES

1:

- Each sloganeer will be pitted against each of the other members in their group and each pairing will be given a different subject matter to make slogans about.

- Pairs will be able to submit 3 slogans in each themed face-off and must do so to threadless. Each sloganeer plays each member of their group once, so that there are 3 games in each group.

- After 45 votes, the percentages of the two highest scoring slogans of each person (out of 3) are compared, and whoever's slogan is ahead by 5% wins 2 points and the loser sloganeer get's 0 points. If both slogans are within 5% of each other, then it's considered a draw and both sloganeers get 1 point. When your slogan reaches 45, please record the percentage and let me know by posting in this blog. PS: be honest.

- After the games are all played, the top 2 sloganeers are then entered into the slogan tournament table. First round is played, then it goes into quarter finals, semi finals and finally the final. Prizes and stuff have yet to be decided.

So the table will look like this essentially.

Things to note:

- Each new round will have a different theme!

- Each sloganeer gets to submit 3 slogans per individual game.

- If there is a draw at any point past the qualifiers, then there will be a sudden death round where sloganeers will only have the chance to submit 1 slogan! So it better be a good one!!

- This will be a great way of giving people inspiration, as well making sure the great slogans are noticed by everyone!

- IMPORTANT: TO STOP ANYONE CHEATING (not that you guys would do that), ONCE YOU'VE SUBMITTED YOUR SLOGANS TO TYPETEES, POST THEM HERE. This way, it will stop people deleting poor scoring slogans and resubmitting replacements. This is all a bit of fun!

To recap - you may submit up to 3 slogans for each theme. After 45 votes, percentage is recorded and pitted against your opponent. Then we go from there. Submit slogans both to TypeTees and post them in this blog. Good luck!

I'm def. in, however might it be a better idea to have the other contenders to vote on each round instead of submitting them to threadless?

I feel like the contestant votes are the only ones that should matter. That does mean more work for you, or you could delegate it to someone else.

I want in. Lemme play.

If all the slogans in a round have to make it to 40 votes in might take a while. Nevermind, only the top two would. I can read.

staffell

@ toopersent - I had thought about this before posting the blog. I think that's a good way of doing it, but firstly it does involves way more effort on my part secondly, it will be the same for everyone, so it won't be unbalanced. Besides, I think sometimes the votard's vote does matter!

@ sparky - I figured that if there are 30 people in the contest, that's over half way there, then you have the votes from casual voters (making up around 10-15 votes in the short time after submitting), and a bunch more from bloggers and sloganeers outside the contest
staffell
staffell on Apr 30 '09 at 11:40am
taking into account the casual voter's vote also adds to part of the challenge too!

Duh, I'm all about this!

haha@nintechno suggesting this idea like a year ago but we never finalized how to make a slogan contest like this, nice job Staffie!

I think it's gonna be hard to judge based on slogan percentages since people will be majorly voting down other's while voting theirs up, but it's all about fun and games and slogan awesome so i'll do it no matter if i wind up below last place.

i'm not judging frick! it's the percentages that will decide who wins :)
MuteJoe
MuteJoe on Apr 30 '09 at 3:58pm
Oooh, how will the themes be chosen?
staffell
staffell on Apr 30 '09 at 3:59pm
I like the fact that going by percentages will take into account the casual voters opinion too I guess. Just makes this contest a little different from yours I guess.
staffell
staffell on Apr 30 '09 at 4:01pm
@mutejoe - i haven't decided that yet, I thought that once we reached the tournament table itself, the loser of the round would decide the next theme.

as for the inital grouping, I'll find a way :)

FRICKINAWESOME
   FRICKINAWESOME on Apr 30 '09 at 4:03pm
No, i know you're not judging, i meant people VOTING on the slogans that are part of the tournament, I'd hope we are all slogan professionals here and not just going to down-vote the other side, but when it's all about 5 percent wins things might get a bit heated and some might have their votes change from yes to no. It's all good, we'll see how it works and it should be fun times indeed.

Suggestion for the crap prize - a postcard of the Jules Rimet cup with 'Staffell's 2009 Word Cup' blatantly written across it.

Man I'm excited to be a part of this.
staffell
staffell on Apr 30 '09 at 4:52pm
maybe I'll change it to 3%, so that one vote won't be enough to swing it either way?
MuteJoe
MuteJoe on Apr 30 '09 at 5:01pm
I think within 5% would give a good chance of some drawn matches, without there been too many.

I suppose it can always be adjusted mid-tournament if too many draws are occurring?
staffell
staffell on Apr 30 '09 at 5:07pm
there is another problem though, what if slogan A has 52% at 45 votes and slogan B has 46%.

Then, they both get 10 more votes and Slogan A goes to 44% and B goes to 53%.

technically, slogan A wins because of the contest guidelines, but if noone's around to see the percentages at 45, then B will win ....
PuppetMeat
PuppetMeat on Apr 30 '09 at 5:09pm
I'll give it a try. I'll probably be knocked out in round 1, but it sounds fun. :)
MuteJoe
MuteJoe on Apr 30 '09 at 5:18pm
Well, this is where it gets decided that either 1) It gets scored by some other method, or 2) someone records the scores at a pre-determined time, and any subsequent changes are disregarded.

This may be the point where we realise how much manual intervention may be required to run such a competition, and whe the previous incarnations never quite left the ground.

Suppose we all submitted the slogans on this blog, and they all got submitted to the votards under one mock account? That might work, then all votes would be on the strength of the slogan rather than the reputation of the sloganeer? Not sure about the possibility of mock accounts though.
staffell
staffell on Apr 30 '09 at 5:21pm
I don't think there's much point in going into it that deeply - I doubt the percentages would change as drastically as I suggested anyway.

This is after all just for a fun and a way of inspiring people to write slogans :)
MuteJoe
MuteJoe on Apr 30 '09 at 5:26pm
I agree. As long as everyone knows what the percentages were when the scoring was done, that'd be fine.
