Interesting facts about the real Jeremy Benthem:

Jeremy Bentham (15 February 1748–6 June 1832) was an English jurist, philosopher, and legal and social reformer. He was a political radical, and a leading theorist in Anglo-American philosophy of law. Bentham's position included arguments in favour of individual and economic freedom, the separation of church and state, freedom of expression, equal rights for women, the end of slavery, the abolition of physical punishment (including that of children), the right to divorce, free trade, usury,[5] and the decriminalization of homosexuality.

As requested in his will, his body was preserved and stored in a wooden cabinet, termed his "Auto-icon". Originally kept by his disciple Dr. Southwood Smith,[11] it was acquired by University College London in 1850. The Auto-icon is kept on public display at the end of the South Cloisters in the main building of the College. For the 100th and 150th anniversaries of the college, the Auto-icon was brought to the meeting of the College Council, where he was listed as "present but not voting".[12] Tradition holds that if the council's vote on any motion is tied, the auto-icon always breaks the tie by voting in favour of the motion.

no preview of the next season because I think they aren't sure what to do with the story.

it seems like they just write it as it goes... which is fine.

they have some core ideas they stick to but then it can just go in a completely different direction.. they leave it so open so they can choose to do whatever they want with it.

So, now that john is the leader of the Others, do we know ywt what in the HELL they are "following" John or before that Ben for? I posed this question to everyone in the room and no one could give me an answer. In case i missed something, we still don't know where the others came from and what they are searching for, protecting or doing on the island yet, right?

yeah Evan. it is impressive that a show can tell you so little but be this engrossing.

Or maybe that's why it works so well?
FRICKINAWESOME
FRICKINAWESOME on May 30 '08 at 1:49pm
That's probably why it works so well, dan. It's like a whole episode goes by, you hear so much talk and they reveal so many new things....yet each line of the show could be taken to mean or referring to literally dozens and dozens of people, events or outcomes. GAHHHHHHHHHH it's so frustrating but amazing.

I need information on Richard goddamit.

Jeremy Bentham is simply as an alias (a whimsical play on the fact that John Locke is also a famous historical philosopher) and has no relevance other than the fact that they couldn't know John Locke was another survivor of Flight 815 otherwise they'd know the 6 were lying.
staffell
staffell on May 30 '08 at 2:33pm
I offer no theories as to how the fuck Locke got off the Island - perhaps he traced back to the ice cave at some point? Or perhaps he's John Locke's doppleganger, spliced by time travel.
shirtflirt
shirtflirt on May 30 '08 at 2:36pm
i'm thinking it's the latter, the dark matter. good point on the alias. i didn't think of that.

evan, no, we still don't even know what the island is except that 'miracles' happen there according locke/benthem.

i think it's pretty safe to assume that the hostiles have the islands best intentions at heart. they live in the woods ready to defend this island place. they don't age, at least richard doesn't. so i'm gonna say that the island is NO TIME and ALL TIME all the time.

so little has been said about the 'hostiles' "you don't even know what that word means do you?" (Richard to a young Ben Linus) no, richard I DON'T but i would like to.

it doesn't seem possible to even be conceived and born on the island. aaron was born there. ji yeon was conceived there. hmm

shirtflirt
shirtflirt on May 30 '08 at 5:18pm
oh MAN! at the very end of the episode ben was describing a scenario much like the one in the pilot episode; all the important people are together all the way down to there being a coffin on the plane.
fat locke benthem in the coffin is the doppleganger locke, he's the new fake airplane in the ocean, nothing more than a thing to be used as a catalyst for action.
charlotte is the female counterpart to richard alpert. i think they may be adam and eve. "would it sound weird to tell you that i'm still looking for where i was born". which may tie into staff's postulation about the hostiles being OF the island.
i can't wait to see what 'bad things' happened on the island. and we all know that jacob visits people in their dreams to get them to do what he/it needs/wants so who's to say 'bad things' even happened. blaming jack is about as bad as gets for jack, he hates doing something wrong.
i think in the future, jacob will use john locke's 'body' the same way he uses christain shephard's 'body'; as a vessel.
i'm tired. i'll be back later.

Maybe John had to move the island, and was not allowed to return, like Ben.

*head explodes*
shirtflirt
shirtflirt on May 30 '08 at 8:39pm
y'know squinty i was thinking about that fact.

jacob did tell john he had to move the island. and ben went ahead and did it, potentially showing jacob that's how comitted he is to the island and thus gaining jacob's favor again.

i just don't trust that ben's doing things for the good of the island. he's posessive.

Ben is the most interesting villain on television. Until this episode, I have been considering that perhaps Ben really is one of "the good guys".

It also seemed like perhaps Ben knew about the C4 since it was very convenient that he was letting everyone head to the freighter to get off the island, when he really doesn't want them to leave.

shirtflirt on May 30 '08 at 8:50pm
he pissed off sun when he let those people die and they may in fact have been a very bad move

it seems likely that she'll be the link to widmore finding ben/the island again when jack starts to reassemble to the band for one more tour.

So why the fuck didn't any one scream and shout for everyone to jump overboard? That makes no sense at all. Why would Desmond only be freaking out about the chopper instead of shoving people off the boat? Or did some folks survive and we'll see them later?
J-Ray
J-Ray on May 30 '08 at 10:16pm
When Christian/Jacob says to Michael, "You can go now"... it suggests that everybody who's left the island (?) has entered into some kind of contract with him. Since other people have to get back, and can't die until they do, perhaps they also have to do something for him?
the czar
the czar on May 30 '08 at 10:18pm
Mmm that's a good point. That was weird because doesn't Michael visit Walt in a flash forward in NY?
And did Rose and her hubby get off?
I wonder what happens to the last set in the Zodiac.

Jray - yes, you are right, I forgot he left and came back.
So much to keep track of.

Overall a great season, even if Jack is starting to wear on me. I really love what they have done with Ben, I think he is my favorite character now.
FRICKINAWESOME
FRICKINAWESOME on May 30 '08 at 10:55pm
Jack has been getting less and less likable as the season has worn on. He's the most thick-headed and one track minded of all people on the island now, "It's time to get off the island, nothign else matters!"

My first thought when i saw John in the coffin was that he had to move the island again and was kicked off. But how long had he been off the isalnd then, assumed a new identity and then wound up where Jack and the rest now live?

And isn't it wierd now that live-forever-man is gonna take directions from Ben, the kid he visited a long long time ago and gave him that isalnd/dhali llama test that he apparently failed?
FRICKINAWESOME
FRICKINAWESOME on May 30 '08 at 10:58pm
Also, i don't think barely anyone died from that boat explosion (since they made such a passing about it and provided no close-up, also wasn't that explosion and the helicopter hitting the water the fakest computer graphics you've sen in forever?)
shirtflirt
shirtflirt on May 30 '08 at 10:58pm
i thought richard seemed a little put off with Ben.

and if that bearded jack scene is 3 years in the future (aarons 3) and locke died a couple days earlier...i don't think he turned the wheel.
if he did kill himself, he wouldn't need to go back bc the island would have been done with him. the same way jack and michael couldn't kill themselves; the island had work for them to do.
shirtflirt
shirtflirt on May 30 '08 at 10:58pm
for a show that has a massive budget, those two scenes were definitely youtube quality.
J-Ray
J-Ray on May 30 '08 at 11:23pm
They have to cut corners here and there. It's still just a TV show.

Remember the original polar bear from the first season? Basically just a stuffed animal that they threw in the air. The DVD box set had a better CGI version, but it shows you that they do have a limited budget. And a huge cast that has to get paid!
J-Ray
J-Ray on May 30 '08 at 11:24pm
It's funny/nice how Sawyer became so protective and self-sacrificing this season.

I feel like there should be more to Desmond's story but it seems like we're not going to get much more.
J-Ray
J-Ray on May 31 '08 at 12:35am
So does everyone agree that the island moved in time? Because... if it did... wouldn't it still be visible there -- unless it moved into the future.
FRICKINAWESOME
FRICKINAWESOME on May 31 '08 at 12:56am
It might not have moved into another time, just another place. It can do both, one or the other, or any other combo i think. Also, that was the FIRST EPISODE of LOST when the polar bear was crappy, this is four seasons in and the show has a budget to make everything else look amazing, but CGI graphics from 1998 just baffle me since computer graphics are so damned easy to do now....the plane on the ocean floor looked great.

Actually they have it totally mapped out which is why they specifically requested a finish date from ABC, and got it. Until they had that date set they were kinda pulling it out of their asses for a couple of episodes (which is why the middle of last season was lame) but now they've got the timing of the major plot points nailed down. The strike threw things off a bit though.

New theory!

Remember the end of season two? When desmond turned the key in the final 10 minutes? And how everything turned white and a loud noise was made? What if the island moved then but no one knew it then!?? Or if there was some sort of connection?!?! Or whatever!??!

well probably not but still...
