God knows, no-one needs encouragement to make any more 'heart' shirts but, seeing as half a dozen of them crop up every day, it would be good to get the anatomy right. The human heart is in the centre, not on the left. Check it out:

It isn't totally on the left, but it usually is aligned more to the left than to the right.

I think everyone knows that, but people would just think it was a weird centered design. This is art, not science!!

your heart is off center, it leans slightly to your left.

If you put your hand on your chest you can feal it more on the left, slightly, but I think it's generally in the center, as you can see in that illustration. It's just the part that beats that's toward the left, if that makes sense :o)

But yeah, symbolically the heart is perceived more as being on the left, so I don't think it's so much ignorance as design...even though it does bother me seeing heart designs oriented waaaay on the left, In fact I don't really like heart designs in general, but that's neither here nor there~

I don't think anyone cares. Well, some people care. And it pisses me off when they do. :p I just submitted a heart design yesterday, and it's on the left. So ha.

just for you, i'll post one on the right someday. xD honestly, yeah, it's just gotten to the point where if you put it in the center, it'd just look weeiiird... :P and like someone suggested before, let's not work art down to a science. aesthetically (i am afraid that i mispelled that) it is better to one side, and because it is ever so SLIGHTLY more to the left than the center, if you put it on the right, people are gonna fa-lip. O_O
i'll do it anyway if it'll make you happy. xD have a happy day! :D

had a patient one who had survived a plane crash--her heart ended up on the R (messed up quite a lot of auscultations)

she might take umbrage to your comment, as hers is not in the center--anyway--funny comment @ she dreams on the water...

did you have a bad experience with a heart t-shirt when you were younger?

a friend of mine saw heart in concert last week. it was at a bowling alley, and he said that the wilsons' famous cleavage no longer cleaves, it just kinda wrinkles.

I wonder who draw the first simple heart shape, any ideas?

It originated in the 15th century I believe

This is one of the first instances:

the heart is actually vaguely shaped like the "heart shape". people in the middle ages just stylized everything. of course, we don't do that NOW . . .

I hear it originated before that, in some far off religious symbolism. It was originally the symbol for female genitalia.

" It was originally the symbol for female genitalia. "
That's strange.

Shadowlemur, I have to defer to your patient who has her heart on the right but I guess the operative phrase is that it "ended up" there, rather than starting off. If I'd drawn a heart on the left when I was in art school, I'd have been frog-marched straight off the premises, possibly with my hair on fire. Artists who take their work seriously learn anatomy early. It's a very basic skill.

Im pretty sure its on the middle-left of your body, not right in the center. thats why we put our hand over the left side of our chest when singing the star spangled banner, etc, instead of on the middle of our chest.

jackanapes on Jan 18 '06 at 12:38pm
no. there is just a major artery there, and that is what you feel when you feel your heartbeat.
cambert
cambert on Jan 19 '06 at 5:03am
Yeah, jackanapes is right. The aorta arches away from the heart towards the left. It's all easy enough to check on the interweb thang. What are school biology teachers teaching people?

yeah, but it annoys me when people write 'oooh, the hearts not supposed to be there' I KNOW. As it's been said in previous posts, it doesn't look good slightly off to the centre.
