They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and it's true. Aesthetic judgements are both very subjective yet incredibly closely held; moreover opinions are like areholes - everyone's got one.

Fonts don't necessarily have to be refined and overtly legible to perform a function, or everything would get set in Baskerville 12 point and up. What's important is using the right font for the job.
As far as what a font actually stands for, well.. meaning accretes. Think of how hip hop culture makes massive use of those grotesque Fraktur typefaces with scant regard for their ancient germanic origins.

Returning to my original point again, there are a multitude of reasons for liking something, usually to do with its inherent nature. I remember reading an article in Eye magazine proclaiming its author's sly liking for Cooper Black - this in spite - indeed because of it's 70s squidgy ugliness. (I love it myself by the way)

So as Alec Guiness once said in a film "You must do what you feel is right, of course.."

But the best font ever is Futura. And Comic Sans is still pretty wack.

I think it's important not to over intellectulise type. Ever read any Jan Tschichold? Dude was a fantastic typographer but the most anal retentive man to walk the earth. You just have to trust your own judgement and fuck the history. If it looks good, it looks good.

Yep, different strokes for different folks, but Futura ExtraBold in capitals is just something I have the hots for.

Typography in itself can be pretty anal, thus you should really just go with the feeling, use the force as they say.
