I decided to get a fish for my dorm room because my room is very lifeless and boring. Fish are the only pets allowed on campus, so that is what I'll have to do. It has to be interesting though. Anyone have any interesting fish they would recommend? I'm considering

a puffer fish.

What size tank are you getting?

I had goldfish in my dorm, but they were a pain. They need big aquariums and poop a lot. Then I got guppies and they died when there was a power failure on campus. :(

The size tank depends on the fish I'm getting. I'd obviously do a lot of research first; I don't want an unhappy/unhealthy fish friend < 3

And that red snapper is pretty sweet

You could do a green spotted or a figure 8 puffer in a 20 gallon tank, but they are brackish so you would have to adjust the salinity of the water slightly.

Petsmart sells true freshwater dwarf puffers. They only get to be about 1.5" max and are super cute. You could do several of those in a 10 gallon.

Keep in mind all puffers need a steady supply of snails or other crustaceans to keep their "teeth" worn down. They also can be picky eaters, and may require frozen or live bloodworms or other similar food if they won't accept flakes or pellets.

I wouldn't recommend going saltwater unless you have a lot of experience keeping aquariums.

Yeah, I was looking up freshwater fish because I haven't had much experience. Dwarf puffers sound adorable! I wonder if they would all puff out at the same times :D

To be honest puffers rarely puff at all, unless you take them out of the water. And that isn't good for them because then they're all full of air instead of water.

Not to be a downer or anything. :P

I don't think I'd ever take them out of the water...that's where they belong :)

where's the spikes?

They only look spikey when they puff up, otherwise they lay flat against their body. The pic in her original post is probably a porcupine puffer or something similar, which is saltwater.

They don't really puff as pets.

I had a beta and he lasted like..2 years. (R.I.P. Agent X) Anyways, they're pretty neat looking and don't require much maintenance. Unless you ACTUALLY want a puffer fish, I don't know. Salt water fish are hard to care for.
broken.yoke
broken.yoke on Aug 23 '06 at 3:54pm

They aren't totally salt water.
They're really easy, actually.
Westwood

The dwarf ones are pure freshwater though.

I think it's.... brackish.
Westwood
Westwood on Aug 23 '06 at 4:00pm
The figure 8s and the green spotted are brackish, but the true dwarf puffer is fresh. The only place I've seen them is petsmart though.
broken.yoke
broken.yoke on Aug 23 '06 at 4:00pm
I've had the figure 8's and the green spotted. Some other weird ones too. I forgot to wait a month and they died.
Westwood
Westwood on Aug 23 '06 at 4:06pm
Oops. :(

I've never kept them myself. My fishies would eat them.

But yeah, if you're going to go with puffers make sure you look up the nitrogen cycle for aquariums. Otherwise you will kill them. :(
