PC or Mac?

I ask because, after 5 years of loyalty to my imac G5, it's become apparent it's time for an update (ie the price to fix it after it crapped itself a fortnight ago, equals roughly the price of a new entry level imac)

so the burning question, stick to mac's or go back to PC's, and if a mac, is it worth the extra 3 grand to get a mac pro?

I'm especially interested to hear of anyone who uses a mac pro/power mac - and whether they thought the investment was worth it, as apposed to just getting another imac which will inevitably need to be replaced in another 5 years...

Nearly every pc (meaning personal computer) gets completely replaced after some amount of years. Upgrading is rare since the development in this area is so fast that you just have to exchange everything.

From an ecological standpoint I would still prefer having a separate screen because the screen is probably the one component that might be used the longest. I don't like the idea of throwing the screen away just because I need more processing power.

Mac vs. PC... I have been working with both for years (at home I am using both). I actually don't care much. The important thing is software and all that Adobe stuff, for example, exists for both.

I very much agree with the idea of not wanting to throw out a perfectly good monitor because the guts of the thing are obsolete, that being said i'm completely sold on getting a mac screen, BUT in any case are the HD screens better than the new LED screens? I've read a few blogs where people have said colour matching is not as good on the new mac LED's... so are the HD's still the way to go (thats what i use at work with a PC hard drive) I'm inclined to keep with the mac at home given i'm using pc's at work just to keep efficient in using both - but the expense of going to the mac pro is just so huge in comparison.

hey i remember you!!

i was actually just gonna post a similar blog about non-mac desktop vs laptop options for designers. considering the Rand has crapped out against the Dollar, a laptop is $%&^$ expensive...

build yourself a PC. it's much easier than you'd think and you can customize it however you want. it's also a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a Mac. plus, PCs can be upgraged. like, whenever you want. right now, even. Mac's use of nearly completely proprietary hardware makes upgrading expensive and difficult.

and everyone should give Linux a try instead of Windows or OSX. it doesn't hurt to try. you might just like it. there are plenty of distros like Ubuntu that can be run from a CD without doing a thing to your computer.

i remember you lot too! threadless blogs really haven't changed at all have they, still the same crowd.

thanks for all the advice :) now i'm more unsure than ever j/k

bram! ive been working full time as a graphic designer in sydney... which has pretty much killed any creative juice i have for outside projects like threadless. But i plan on changing that, cos it seems a bit silly buying a new computer for myself and not actually using it for designing stuff. what's have you been up to? you thought up 'fractions speak louder than nerds'? genius... i'm so out of touch with threadless now!

you can only use a mac if you are an insufferable hipster graphic design student with billions of dollars to spend on a computer. you can only use a pc if you are a bespectacled IP type who can't function socially and can tell you what every single circuit on the computer can do for you. You can only use linux if you really really really really care what other comic nerds think about you.

thats the burning question... is it worth the $6000 they're asking for the base model 8 core...

does anybody know about the LED monitors and whether they're better than the cinema displays?
Steve The Great
Steve The Great on Mar 17 '09 at 7:10pm
I think the general feeling about Apple's cinema displays is that they're relatively old tech and overpriced. you can get a better monitor elsewhere. I have no idea what that would be.

I've been looking at macbooks today, but there are so many reviews bitching about the glass screen protector having insane amounts of glare... I shall continue my investigation.

Also... if you are making pixar animations the mac pro will probably be sufficient. If not, I'm guessing you don't need that superhero.

6000 bucks? whoa

8 core's pretty heavy duty

do you need 8 processor's?
girl.guide.gone.bad
   girl.guide.gone.bad on Mar 17 '09 at 8:32pm
6000 aussie dollars roughly. probably not haha but im thinking this will be an investment that will go the distance, something i can build on... its not the fact that i need the 8 core, its that the previous model can only be updated so far, and then its obsolete. i hate technology - it forces you to buy the latest and greatest. :P

but at least when im out of a job cos we're in recession ill have a beast of a machine to flog...
