I'm a theater makeup and sometimes costume designer, and I have some general notes about which colors don't look good on people, which may give anyone who is interested in design a better idea of what colors shirts to use:

Dark skinned people:

Jamaicans have it all. They can wear almost any color and look fabulous. The only thing I would stay away from would be clothing that was very close to my own skin color, not because it looks bad, but because wearing a contrasting shirt would look amazing by comparison.

Medium or Brown toned people:

Again, they look good in most colors. I would stay away from orange or yellow, depending on the tone. Neon: bad. Pastel: fine.

Pale folk:

Us white folk have it tough when choosing colors because we have a lot more tones in our skin than darker people, mostly because blemishes show up a lot easier, and you can see our veins through our skin in some places. Most of us, especially the very pale white folk such as myself, do not look good in the following colors:

Yellow - Banana is okay. It's not great, but it wouldn't stop me from buying a shirt if it was printed on banana. The basic yellow on the other hand... it's hideous and would make any fair skinned person look like they're dying.

Neon colors: Terrible, especially neon orange and green, which tend to put all the focus on our veiny areas.

Pink: It only looks bad on very fair people. It brings out blemishes and scars.

Cream: "Look, it's a ghost walking down the street!"

Those are the main trouble colors. Hope this has been interesting if nothing else.

i basically agree with everything you said about pale folk as i am one.

gold and natural shirts make me look pretty weird, but i think pink actually looks good on me. i might be wrong.

As a fellow white folkian, what's wrong with blemishes and having a see-through skin so everyone can view our busy inner-body underworld? Your paying off your debt to soiety everyday as a living biology skeleton that med students can examine just by sparking up a conversation! As for neon, it's a bad choice i feel simply because those colors are horrid examples of 80's fashion and the embodiment of running out of ideas and having no place to go but turning every color into radioactive 3 Mile Island experiments.

What i do with any color that doesnt seem right for me, i just wear my unzipped black hoodie over it and-PRESTO!- it neutralizes whatever ill effects the color might have on my complexion...does this work or am i just fooling myself?

Interesting... but are you basing this handy-dandy chart on how it looks on stage in a theater (since you said you're a theater makeup artist) or on the everyday, real life lighting outside, in the home, etc.? Cuz I know you know that theater lights are designed to be perfect while the crappy 50 watt bulb I have in my place is barely bright enough to read the back of the Honey Bunches of Oats box...

haha, some of my veins show up no matter what color I'm wearing.

I disagree with the cream thing. At least, I don't think that the cream color on AA shirts is really that bad. I look awful, awful, awful in white but the cream seems to be somewhat okay. It doesn't really wash me out, and I'm pretty pale.

I really agree with the banana/basic yellow thing. I'm totally fine with banana, but the basic yellow is sort of weak.. definitely a recipe for making myself look sickly.

My opinion on the subject is not based so much on what I see on stage so much as what I have designed for outdoor events such as the Renaissance Faire, and what I have noticed when taking photos of people for my portfolios. On stage is not the real world, but if the costume designer doesn't take into account the actor's coloring, it can be very hard for me as the makeup designer to make the actor look good. Theatrical lighting can help, but if you put the person in an appropriate color to begin with, it makes the whole thing easier. Lighting is a whole different story too. If someone is lit badly... it's a mess. For example, The Wiz is a very difficult show to light because dark skinned people look terrible in green light, so how do you create the Emerald City on stage? But I'm getting carried away here...

Same here. I look good in blues and greens. It depends on your eye color. I have gray/blue-ish/green-ish eyes, so I tend to wear those colors a lot. I also look good in dark purple/plum colors.

I'm a pale/sickly tan colour and you're right about neons. I stay away from them, I don't look so hot in pink either. But lighter, pastel yellows are golden...actually goldrod ain't half bad either. =) Oh, and i'd be more of a golden tan if i actually went outside much.

Hrmm... I'm super pale with freckles (of German,Danish, & Scottish descent) and I LOVE gold / orange / yellow shirts. And Greens!! I just adore greens (I also 90% have red hair although it's dyed and not genetic... hehe I didn't luck out and get my great grandmothers hair) I also don't mind creme so much.... but I really really HATE silver as it's super light grey and makes me look like I'm deathly sick.

Oh lordy, don't get me started on silver. Nicole Kidman always wears silver and gold to those award shows, and it always looks bad on her.

I have a yellow shirt that I love, but it's a pastel yellow and it looks okay. If it was school bus yellow though, no freaking way.

Good luck on The Wiz. That show can easily become a nightmare.

ugh, I can't wear silver. Ever. Or anything that's not very dark grey. Worst color ever besides pure white.

Yeah.. it may become a nightmare; at least the rehearsals are fun.

it's true that fair-skinned people look better in greens and blues and blue-greens. it does bring out the eyes.

I am asian, so I am medium or bown toned then. I tend to weat a lot of white t-shirt over black skinny or blue jeans. is white ok?? I like white, grey, and pastel pink. I actually like green but not green t-shirt. I have apple green shirt though.

The trick is to buffer colors with white.

Any color will look fine provided you know how to dress and can create a good outfit.
rudra
rudra on Jan 18 '07 at 11:52pm
fairly accurate - but i think all shades have tones to their skin they need to be aware of (which can take a lot of trial and error)

my skin-tone is weird - it's olive, i tan easily so it has an orangeish cast, but i actually avoid the sun and am really quite pale at the same time - which makes me an ashy grey-green overall

w/reddish-brown hair and eyes

in clothes: earth tones are my favorite, i love greens, browns, dark purples and dark muted reds, blues are ok, pastels and natural are ok

i don't like the attention-drawing factor of bright colors, although bright red is an ok color on me, i almost never wear it - and neons are hideous on just about everyone

i actually get compliments from total strangers saying that crayon green is a good color for me (apparently most people find it hard to wear)

in make-up: gold, pinks, browns, rust and coppery oranges, and purples are best (natural, warm toned colors); muted greens are ok; silver and blues are completely out of the question (there is nothing worse than silver eye-shadow on olive-toned skin :$ )

so to all those designers:

Step away from the Gold! and Orange! and anything neon!!!

I hardly wear black as I am quite lean. It makes me look thin and tall. Also, it is hot.
