I've always been one of those stoic PC users, the sort of person who rolls their eyes when those hip young kids start raving about Apple and Macbooks and how easy and inventive and unlikely to get viruses they are. I'd only ever used a Mac perhaps twice, and found the whole experience most confusing.

And then, yesterday, I had to edit a poster at uni, on a desktop Mac. And a friend who is familiar with Apple came with me. I was doing my usual 'Grr, I don't understand the layout of this computer' thing.

And then.

He showed me.

The button that makes all the windows go all little, so you can select which one you want to have up.

And with that, a press of F3, I was sold.

And then I got all excited about the Dashboard button, and the button that brings up the programs you've got open. I had to download a font to use on the poster, and I was getting worried about how to install it, but then it just appeared with a button saying 'Install this font.' No Control Panel! Gadzooks!

And now I'm eyeing my HP Pavilion (a source of woe if ever there was one, it's currently out of service because the charger broke (or the port, I'm not sure), and you can't get parts for it in Australia) with suspicion and dreaming Macbook-y dreams.

Oh dear.

now the only problem is coming up with 2 grand to buy one, yes?

that's my problem, the ones that i want are too expensive, and the ones that aren't as expensive ($1100) have not so good features like 80 gig hard drive and 1G ram (boo)

oh also, it's not that macs are less susceptible(sp?) to viruses, it's that most viruses are windows based, and if you don't have windows the virus doesn't affect your computer

I've been using one for about 10 years; but I've never been one of those guys that tries to convince other people to use one. My wife even owned a pc for years; because she was afraid of my macs. Then she bought a macbook for school and she'll never look back (or at least that's what she says).

I only try to convince certain PC users to get MACs. People like me, who don't necessarily want to know how the computer works, but just want the computer to work!

edean is right about the viruses thing. If the majority of computer users went out today and bought and used macs there would be viruses sent out tomorrow and we would all be screwed. but thats not gonna happen. so go for it, and get yourself a mac if you can afford one, they are pretty pricey.

Danielle hit it on the head, I think. Like, for me, I am going to learn how to flash my BIOS tonight and I am completely jazzed. I understand that this prospect is unappealing to most people. Most people just like to drive their cars, not futz with the engine...there's nothing wrong with that.

not necessarily a gaming PC, though i'll definitely be getting a decent graphics card for it. my current computer, which i've had since 2003, is on its last legs, so it's definitely time for a new one. i might actually switch over to linux, or at least dual boot (hopefully with XP instead of Vista).

Brian, Tim & I just built our new PCs and we got this card from Newegg.com:

EVGA 01G-P3-N809-AR GeForce 8800GT AKIMBO 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card

I've been playing Portal with everything turned all the way up and it looks real purty. Plus we got lots of adorable hot pink RAM. Sadly for Tim, it's so huge that he can't fit another into the motherboard he got, but he's not too upset about it since it is performing so well by itself.

what are the specs of your PC? i haven't even begun shopping yet, so i'm not sure what i'm gonna do. my goal is to keep it under $500 since i can probably use some components from my current compy.

ya, that card is definitely a bit more than i'm looking to spend on a GPU :-p i'm sure it's insane, though.

^pfffft, hahaha...well-played, sir

Brian, besides the video card, I've got an AMD Phenom quad-core 9800 2.3GHz processor & 4GB DDR2 800 RAM. Tim's got the comparable Intel processor w/8GB of the same RAM. If you want, you can e-mail me or something about the parts you're looking to upgrade. Tim says he doesn't mind sharing all the pain-in-the-ass building research he just did.

Oh, and don't fear the Vista. We got the 64-bit Ultimate version, and I really don't see what everyone complains about. It's mostly the same. I like the little changes. It installs way easier than XP did, and I'm of the mind that if I'm going to have to feel my way around a new OS eventually, I may as well get it out of the way now. This F3 button thing that sold ecky_ducky sounds like the ctrl+windows+tab superfun in Vista, so I certainly can't blame her for being charmed by that feature. ( :

still sorry for hijacking, will try to stop now that I've written an essay / :

i haven't decided if i'm gonna go AMD or Intel. as tech-savy as i like to think i am, all the different processors these days are still confusing. i just have a good ol' pentium IV in my current PC (dual processor, i think, but not dual core).

also, i didn't know you were such a nerd. why have you never revealed this information?! you're like...so much cooler now.

*blushes* aw...nah, I am to real nerds as pit vixens are to F1 drivers. I had to call him up and ask him about what we put in there. All I could remember was the generalities, the colors of the parts, and how terrified I was that I would snap the motherboard in half when I was trying to put in that damn cooling unit.

Intel's also easier to overclock, if you're into that.

Kayce, I totally remember the Macpocalypse of '07.

If I suddenly find 2 grand in the next short period of time (I currently have four dollars in my bank account), I'm in. Ha.

And tracer, building your own computer is possibly the most awesome thing I've ever heard.

Congrats.

I was in a book once. Well, not me, technically, my wife. And she was nude, with her eyes obscured by a black box. And it wasn't a book, it was a magazine. And it wasn't my wife, just some chick I was looking at. Whilst naked."
