Well, it looks like something Picasso would've done if he was a deconstructivist, yet what bothers me about this design is that although the individual elements created are visually interesting, the complete form creates a weak design that is unfair to each individual element (eye, nose and mouth)

This almost grid like composition gives me an "I'm just filling space" impression.
Which in this case could be a problem because the viewer's eye cannot focus on any area of the design, and when it takes a look at the big picture it sees nothing different.

I also think that a difference in color is enough to express the designer's intentions from each element, without having to use "pre-fabricated" patterns.

i like the patterns, they add texture. Not everything has to be about colours you know, texture is important too.

Bananaphone, not that I really care about this blog, but personal attacks are uncalled for. Darfeel is talking about the design, not the designer.

well, bananaphone, thats actually how my moustache is... I kinda get that a lot.
Maybe I should get rid of the whole moustache to avoid having flimsy conversations with people more interested in facial hair than talking about design.

i agree with banana...textures are important sometimes
and about the grid....it doesn't need a grid ....its just an illustration...and it's not functional design.

"what picasso would have done if he were a deconstructivist"? surely there's a more contemporary artist this is comparable to. i guess you're saying that to seem knowledgable in art, but come on! picasso's kind of a long shot.

I agree with sonmi, there isn't much similarities between Picasso and Damien's tee.

In any case, the pattern and colors are lovely, I wish there was just more of it, since it is a Select tee.

Nobody touches Picasso. You might seen the more popular stuff from him. I saw some of his earlier sketches in a museum. That guy is a genius.

... the grid is actually very 'modern art picasso esque'. if your going to get all art critic i suggest that you not diss something that was actually an integral part of the art at that time. Rosalind Krauss writes extensively about the imporance of the grid in Picasso's work as well as Mondrian and many other artists works. So if the work were to be something like picasso's work as you claim it to be it would actualy make since for it to refence the grid because it was a device that picasso did infact use.
Just because something is square doesnt make it static. the things that make this design interesting are the colors and varied shapes within the design. Mondrian did the same thing with his solid blocks of color, he repeated the same shape, but he made them interesting with scale and color. And because of the bright colors and chaos of this design i really think the centered solid comopsition helps to calm it down for the eye to enjoy.
Its a good design, leave it alone.

I'm a designer, not an art critic. So when I critique a design, I talk about the strengths and weaknesses of a design with respect to color, compasition and form.
The fact that the designer chose to constrict his elements within an imaginary rectilinear boundary doesn't seem to work well, especially with a t-shirt for a canvas.
I've come to also notice that a lot of you guys use basic, subjective and "taste" driven comments like "good", "nice","lovely", "cute" without even giving reasons.
I thought this was an alternative and interesting way to talk about design within a certain media, to see tees make it or break it, you know?
And velvetsamurai, hell yeah im gonna leave that tee alone, id be out of my mind to even come near something like that
