So the last time I came here looking for a topic to write about, I got a really good suggestion from one of you guys, and got an A on it. So I was hoping to strike gold again and I need you guys to help me pick out a subject I can use for my photo essay for my photojournalism class.

It's a level 300 college class by the way, and I have 4-5 weeks to do the assignment in. It CAN'T be a single event or photo shoot. It has to be a subject that's socially relevant and worthy of all the time I could spend on it. The photo essay should also tell a story.

*it has to be interesting and complex, so it can't be about my pet, boyfriend, or whatever
*has to have some human aspect to it, so i can't take pictures of random objects-- like litter in a park. i would have to find someone who is affected by the topic basically, although i can take pictures of objects.
*i have to be able to revisit the subject multiple times so it has to be within my area... I dorm an hour away from NYC so around that parameter. so it has to be really accessible for me.
* there has to be more than one angle to it.

What other people have done/ was shown in class:
Seton Hall Burn Victims
Marines coming home
Thai boys becoming temporary monks for a month
Street Car racing
Imminent Domain in Trailer Park {people are getting kicked out of their homes by the government}
Girls obsessed with beauty {tanning, waxing, etc.}
Illegal Immigrants

i'm fresh out of ideas so i figured that the lot of you are full of them. so please help me out.

i'm willing to buy a shirt and give the street points to whoever's topic that I and my teacher likes best! expect points sometime next week

Well, I would think you could do something on the plight of the homeless in NYC, and the people who try to help them at the shelters.

I always like how telephone poles have ages and ages worth of pins, nails, and thumbtacks layered on them.

.. How about doing it on gay hate crimes (like Matthew Shepard incident or many others)?
bhoomika
bhoomika on Mar 31 '08 at 11:23pm
also, how about mothers who get their children taken away (because there could be multiple views to that.. a view of the state who thinks that the child should be taken away and a mother's view about the sadness or lack of it.. )
You know what I mean?

telephone poles can only work if i do it with the workers... they're just workers.

birds can only work if i work with someone who takes care of birds, like pigeon man in hey arnold

and i also like the layers of stuff on telephone poles

i remember how nyc was to me, I fellt soo surrounded by people doing stuff and looking buzy.

I would like to see the contrast of the people that are there to have fun, and on vacation and the people thar work like hell.
I mean, if you could frame in the same pic, for example, a group of tourists and buzy wallstreet people, that would make me pay atention to the photo.

I´m sure this city could provide you with the priceless expressions of someone that sees is for the first time ( i remember my first time in the big apple, i was mesmerized by the whole thing) mixing with the expressions of people that built that city from nothing.

Some people thinks it´s hard to live in nyc, maybe they need to see the city with the eyes of a tourist.

the gay hate crimes would be interesting if i knew of any that has happened recently and in my area... i'll try to talk to my women's center

yeah i see your view on children being taken away from mothers... but it'd be really hard trying to find someone whose child was taken away, and i don't know if they would let me document them. it's a very hard topic. but it is interesting.

like what gender issues? violence in schools.. not so prevalent in my area, everyone is easy going around here, racism is kind of hard to depict; maybe segregation. gun control is not that interesting to me.

hmmm bafocomics. that's interesting, but more like a feature... i guess it could be sort of considered socially relevant, but it's more like depicting the fast paceness of the city itself, and there would be some diversity, but really these topics should have some beginning, middle and end.

like a past project was how this guy wanted to become a professional stage fighter.

1. show pictures of him teaching actors how to fight on stage
2. show pix of him fighting in front of an audience on stage
3. pix of him getting his certificate
4. pix of his side job/ home life

and also there was a photo essay that someone did on how a person became police officer:

1. his classes
2. getting sprayed with mace
3. training/ working out
4. graduation
5. getting out on the streets
6. home life

For gay hate crimes -- I think you could find a LGBT group in New York that would be able to tell you about some recent incidents. I don't know if women center would be the right place?
Let me know if u need any help with this issue.

I find writing papers about Human issues interesting. I loved my ethics class. :-D

puma7. maybe you have something there, though really it can turn out to be a feature piece on someone who just happens to be gay. i might have to really find an angle on it, like a protest or an information session, i'll visit the women's center and see what i can do with it.

boysbeambitious {love your threadless name btw} the landmarks is sweet and cute but i have to reallly really know the parents and the child for me to do that, it'd just be creepy if i took pictures of them, despite how young i look. and there's not much of a story there with people taking naps on the subway unless i can do a story on the homeless like what the czar said. i could probably do a story on how they survive or get by. hmm.

bhommika. my women's center is also the LGBT center too. they meet there all the time. hmm. good idea about contacting them in nyc. aww thanx. if i do end up picking that topic i might consult you about the angles i can work that issue in.

about my sugestion, you could break apart by fallowing a specific group of tourist and a specific worker of nyc.

You could fallow them and take pics without interfering with their route.

Well, this kind of thing.

P.S.: just bought a new camera i´m all in the mood to take pics ^^

*not a professional one, but the best i could afford.

hmmm. bafocomics, that's interesting how you put it. i kind of like the tourist idea because i know i probably wouldn't be able to enter the building of where the worker worked unless i knew them well, and i don't really know anyone who works in NYC.

but there may only be one angle to it though, just seeing them at tourist locations... there isn't much of a story there other than them going from one location to the next UNLESS i can see them in their hotel rooms or visiting their families relaxing. but we'll see.

do it on shoes. like on the subway or something take pictures of everyones shoes. i dont know but that sounds rather cool to me.
love_lingers
love_lingers on Apr 01 '08 at 12:07am
bhoomika - interesting, but i have to know them really well for me to enter their household like that.

if i were to do date rape, i would have to know someone who has been date raped, and is willing to be documented. i don't think people would be willing to be photographed for that, and that would be a bit hard because i would be only catching the aftermath, unless the guy is in jail or something.

5napple - shoes is interesting, but it's not very socially relevant. they are just objects, and not interesting to a lot of people. unless i did it on a really dedidicated shoes saleman
or a shoe fetishist
