I've been hanging on the blog forum, and I've noticed that alot of people have really low average scores. As in below 1. I just don't understand that. I'm worried that its just people hating on others designs. Now, I'm not against giving a design a 0. IF it deserves it. For a design to get a zero, it must have no merits whatsoever. THIS is very hard to accomplish.
I also feel that it might be a strategy. 5$ for those one would buy, and 0 for those one would not. However, if this was an appropriate way to score, then wouldn't the scale be only 0 and 5$?
I have an average of about 2.5, and I am proud of it. I feel that this shows I am fairly judging. Because on a 5 point scale, thats the average I should have.
I'm not asking that you over-score. I'm just asking that you look at a design as a design, not only if its something you would wear. For instance, I really did not like "survival of the shittiest". However, I gave it a 3 because the design was well-done, and I really liked the color choices.
These are just some thoughts I had.
Not accusing.... just wondering what people think.

Any thoughts???

My average score is below 1. Why? Because I have to be honest with myself and admit that the design I'm looking at is poor and I would never wear it, so therefore it gets a 0. There is nothing I enjoy more than giving out a 5$, it just very rarely happens. But I'm very hard to please, I wouldnt even give any of my own designs 5$ if I saw them (well maybe one of them).

Yeah, I understand.
THis is exactly what I was wondering people's "scoring strategy" if I can use that term.
And i wouldn't give any of your designs a 5$ either haha.
Although I gave the stormtrooper a 5.....

Statistically it doesn't matter what someones average score is if they score a large number of shirts and apply their standards consistently.

Funny you are complaining about low average scores, if anything there has been score inflation at threadless lately. If you look at submissions that have finished scoring, and order them highest to lowest score you'll notice that a large number of the highest rated shirts are submissions within the past few months.

I second what Mr Tesko said.

I just re read your original post. I'd really ask people do the opposite of what you suggest. I'm scoreing designs based on how they will look on a shirt. I don't want people to score the designs in a vacum. This isn't a design contest, its a design a shirt contest. If you'd like to rate designs in a vacum there are other places to do that.

I didn't mean ignore the fact it will be on a shirt - sorry if it came out that way. Some designs just won't work on a shirt. What i really meant was, don't just discount something because you wouldn't wear it. You can still appreciate certain aspects of the design.

i score if I LIKE IT on a scale of 0-5 just how it is.

i could give a crap if everyone else likes it or hates it

Mine is between 1 and 2. The thing is i recognize great design and I give it what it deserves, but there is such an OVERWHELMING amount of crap submitted that everyone's average gets dragged down. 5% great designs plus 25% mediocre designs + 70% crap = low average scores.

Scoring is subjective.
Never mind what other peoples' average scores are, worry about your own and your artwork.

My average is low because i only vote 3 different ways.
a zero, a 5, and sometimes a buy. If i dont like the design, and it is poorly executed, it gets a zero. If i like the design, and the concept is illustrated well, then it gets a 5. Even if i wouldnt wear it, but like the design, it gets a 5. Only shirts that i would wear gets a 5 and an id buy. As tesko posted earlier.... giving out a 5 and an "id buy" rarely happens.

There is no reason to vote inbetween. You either like the shirt or you dont. It is wise to post your design before you submit it, in the blog forum. Theres only a small group of regulars who read the posts in the forum, but most of them are serious when it comes to critiquing designs and illustrations. By the time you submit it to threadless, there should be nothing drastic that has to be changed or altered. You dont go to a business and subit a piece that is 75% complete and expect them to tell you what should be done next.... It should be a completed design that needs little to no change.
