Hello Hello! I am currently staying in London for the next month and am looking for the hidden secrets of this town for my short stay. This means restaurants, pubs, night clubs and cool little shops. Especially places that either you can get things for very cheap or get in for free. I am poor. What are your favorites? (And try to stay away from Curry house and fish and chip suggestions)

This Weeks favorite: Yo! Sushi! at the Brunswick center

Check out some of the London markets, usually on at the weekends.

Spitalfields is a good one. Camden is touristy and best avoided.

But remember - if you're going to the markets, watch your bag and purse and belongings in general - pickpockets are pretty common there.

If the weather picks up while you're here, go to the Hampstead Heath Bathing Ponds to relax - they're Victorian outdoor swimming pools, and there's one men's, one women's and one mixed. All surrounded by trees and lovely, apparently.

I like Camden. Amongst all the tacky goth shops there are some nice bargains.

My brother knows all the best markets in London, what with him actually living there and all. And around the markets, you tend to get a lot of good permanent shops too.

I've had some great presents from London's markets.

You have to check out the Tate Modern and the NFT (Southbank). Agreed about Camden. Overrated and full of tourists and people trying to be cool. A good area for eating out/drinks etc is Hoxton (if you can handle the Hoxtonites).

There is stacks to do in London - but one thing people always never suggest is Kew Gardens. It's an awe-inspiring place.

Bramish

Tate Modern is an amazing modern art gallery housed in an old power station, on the river. It's BRILLIANT.

As you go in, you enter the turbine hall, which is HUGE, and usually has some pretty spectacular installation in it. At the moment it's some kind of big exhibition looking at the cities of the world, or something.

Bramish

I think most of what's in Tate Modern is bollocks, but they occasionally have some interesting exhibitions and installations.

I have asked my brother, who knows London inside out, and he recommends the following markets:

Borough Market (London Bridge) for amazing food.

Spitalfield Market for gifts, clothes, crafts, jewellery, some furniture and high quality miscellaneous.

Columbia Road flower market on Sunday mornings is worth seeing, and is lined with quirky shops also worth seeing. Stop for food at the pub there or at the Fleapit.

Brick Lane (East End) and that area on the weekend. Saturday I think, is good for proper dodgy London street market fare

Portobello for antiques and curiosities, though it's losing its uniqueness.

Greenwich market is great - clothes, furniture, miscellaneous - and when you're bored of it you can look at the amazing university and naval college buildings or walk in the park and go up to the observatory for one of the best panoramas of London.

So there you go - my brother: the walking A-Z.

On a personal tip, I would recommend that when you're in Brick Lane area (uber-cool part of town) you chill out with a coffee at 1001 or some similar cafe / bar, and just do some hipster watching. Some of them are pretty spectacular in their insane bids to outcool each other.

We're talking crazy hair and outfits, low-rider chopper bicycles, ridiculously loud and pretentious conversations - all hilarious. It's like the circus have come to town - I love them.

I loved the massive spider installation in the Tate Modern. I can't remember who made it, but man, it was awesome.

ah this is perfect info. exactly what i was looking for. are any of them free? like the tate modern?
13strong
13strong on Jul 12 '07 at 8:45am
Tate Modern is free, except for the special exhibitions, I think...

But it's huge.

The markets are as cheap as you like - depends how much stuff you want to buy, though it's fun to just looks at all the stuff, and if you're into photography, they're a great place to take pictures.

Over the weekend, my flatmate took his two little sons to Odeon Leicester Square to watch Shrek 3. Guess how much the tickets came to?

£45.50 for the three of them! £17.50 for one adult and £14 each for the two kiddies! That's like, $90 (or 6 tees!).
Bramish
   Bramish on Jul 12 '07 at 9:40am
Fuck me! I begrudge paying more than £8, and even then it has to be for a film I KNOW I'm going to enjoy.

krakaboom - that's what happens when you go to the cinema in Leicester Square, though. It would be like going to that Chinese Theatre in LA or something - it's where all the premieres in the UK are held, and it's right in the middle of the most touristy part of London.

There are much cheaper cinemas in London if you seek them out. Always worth investing in a copy of Time Out.

Oh, and the Camouflage exhibition at the Imperial War Museum (not far from the South Bank) is supposed to be excellent.

   Krakaboom on Jul 12 '07 at 10:29am
Yeah, Leicester Square is a total ripoff. I've only ever watched a movie there once ('What Women Want' starring Mel Gibson!) and I didn't pay for that ticket. That was about 6 years ago, and I think my friend paid about £12 - which is bad enough. But £17.50?!

I'd rather buy the DVD.

Just go to Blockbusters and rent Big Lebowski and for the kids Porky's Revenge. If Bram is behind the counter, he'll give you discount or try to make a pass at you. Both if you're Chris Morris, or resemble him.

I'm pretty sure there's about 30 shirts that I want. It's just a matter of getting money together to buy them. Girls shirts should be the same price as Guys shirts. Just even that way. And it means less spending for yours truly.
