I live in Philadelphia, "in the ghetto". This shirt kind of made me cry a little bit. I know it's supposed to be funny. Haha, bullet holes and bandanas... My cousin has been shot. Some of my peers are in gangs. It seems like people get mad and make fun when people find shirts offensive... but come oon! It's not something to make fun of. I don't know why this got printed. It's tasteless! ...my opinion.

yeah..i think it's pretty tasteless too and kind of a rip-off of this Cursive album cover- plus all my black friends have recently said that whenever a white person says "ghetto" when describing something they get more and more pissed, so i've recently stopped cause i meant no harm and i don't wanna get a massive beatdown. Especially in Philly now with the proliferation of stupid gang shirts that are selling by the truckloads...where in Philly do you live..i used to live in fishtown but now thankfully have moved out towards the King of Prussia mall.

I interpreted this shirt differently by the way.

The way I see it is it's kind of mocking this stupid prefixation with the ghetto. You know how white people just LOVE "ghetto" stuff and rap and all of that business? I kind of thought it was commenting on how we glamorize and put that gang shit on a pedestal, or MTV.

I'm probably wrong though.

skipper- yes i know this has been done before on postcards from the past, but it really seems to be taking inspiration from this lastest re-interpretation from the Cursive album.

lucretia- lol. Yeah, the King of Prussia mall is a few miles from my house and i try to avoid it whenever i can b/c it is a pedestrian mindfuck. I can no longer buy any clothing at Urban Outfitters b/c my waist has expanded past the size of a pre-pubscent boys, hence nothing will fit me or barely cover one shoulder blade. I still love going in tho and checking out all the books and other "hip" knick-knacks they have there, which make amqazingly unique, quick and decently priced presents for everyone! King of Prussia is a strange name for a city, but i do indeed love it and instantly feel more regal when i stamp my liquified hot wax seal onto every letter i write. As for the interpretaiton i agree with you, it is most definitely a satire on how the ghetto would be preceived by white people and/or toursists with its white-washed attitude which very few people who see the shirt will get, but i still think its tasteless and really not all that funny- more of a walmart tee kinda funny.

deathcab- im not gonna buy it and neither is the person who started this post...but what's wrong with a discussion on intelligent reasons that you wouldn't purchase this tee and what its actual meaning is?
deathcabfortom
deathcabfortom on Jan 08 '07 at 6:20pm
lol. thats a good point frickinawesome. i guess you could do that, but i just dont want anyone pointing fingers and saying that threadless is hating on people who live in actual ghetto areas.

but hey, who knows. i thought it was funny mostly because i dont like kids who wear their pants down to their knees and XXL tee shirts when they only weigh about 100 pounds.

JackSzwergold
JackSzwergold on Jan 08 '07 at 10:15pm
This is borderline tasteless. I get the premise and the ironic joke to an extent, but feel it really falls flat and the execution of the design leaves it wide open for the criticism that it's getting.

Not to mention it's actually an ugly shirt.

tina-tinkle-toes, I cant say I come from the gutter, but I come from a fairly urban town with its share of rough edges. I've been to several of America's cities and seen the good and the bad. No, I've never spent a night in a heatless house or used food stamps, so, I don't know what "tough living" entails? Since my "ghetto approved" card hasn't arrived in the mail, should I return the shirt?

...I don't even know why I used 3 sentences in the last paragraph defending my knowledge and experience with "ghetto" living. I think so many people on here are "outraged" over this because it's the right thing to do/say. Oh, that's so tasteless. Where's the class, threadless? You honkies have no idea what the ghetto is like. This is the same t-shirt site that sells several shirts with the likeness of Jesus on it, not to mention one of its most popular items contains a person committing suicide.

What I'm trying to get at is—life is too fucking short to get your panties in a bunch over a fairly tame t-shirt. If this shirt were made about "white" stereotypes, nobody would care.

Threadless needs to hire a talented foreign designer with extreme nationalistic tendencies, depicting the american nuclear family as gluttonous, incestuous, and cannibalistic hellspawn. I would love to see the politically correct, diversity-supporting liberals' responses.

I think this shirt just trivializes people's lives who really really suck. And I guess it's like saying the "n-word" not ALL black people are offended but it but I don't think it's fair to just disregard those who have objections to something because people are obsessed with "PC".

Seems like the shirt might be making fun of the trivialization that many lower income areas experience, and not at all supporting the idea of marginalizing the people who live in them.

Satire sometimes goes over people's heads. But it wouldn't be satire if it were made in a way that was not open to misinterpretation.
FRICKINAWESOME
   FRICKINAWESOME on Jan 09 '07 at 2:43am
Yeah im not into this shirt mainly because i dont think it's at all funny and sub-elementary on the effective satire/mocking of culture and-or society, not just because i think it's tasteless and a low point for humor on Threadless. I love a tasteless tee as much as anyone (i own Money Shot, but that tee is infinitely more testing and clever of society's morals and not just a cheap shot at an unfortunate side effect of every industrailized nation), but i agree wholeheartedly with Stevethegreat, jooliesays, and IPEAR's very awesome suggestion.
tina-tinkle-toes
tina-tinkle-toes on Jan 09 '07 at 3:29am
hey guys, I get the satire, what's awful about it is that it steps back and says "You guys forget that the ghetto is a place you shouldn't want to live in" because there is violence, gangs, etc. When you're reminded of shit like that, I don't get how your first reaction is to laugh. Oh, and it's not that you have to see the shit first hand- just at least be educated enough to know that ghettos (or people's hardships that you are lucky enough to not have to endure) is not a laughing matter.
tina-tinkle-toes
tina-tinkle-toes on Jan 09 '07 at 3:36am
I live close to a ghetto- I see kids who want to be there because they want to be a part of their culture. It's a reality for me, not directly, but even kids intoxication by it isn't funny... it can lead to well, shit. I guess if the shirt had focused maybe (for example) on the rap star millionares who think they still have it so bad and kind of, made the satire look the other way, it could have been funny.

I'm a big fan of "Greetings from..." card designs so this t-shirt appealed to me on that level. And I have to say I had the cynical laugh inside as well. However, I do live in a ghetto area (though I'm "white"). And thinking about what reaction that shirt would get in my neighborhood made me think more about it all.

People get shot and some get killed in my neighborhood. There are addicts. There are dealers. There are roving gangs of kids who mug people. Etc. etc. You get the picture. And when you look at the things depicted in each of those letters on the t-shirt when you live in a neighborhood like this, it's not a cheap punchline to you. It is really incredibly sad.

The shirt is meant to be worn by people who don't live in the ghetto. "Ha ha."

It is just a t-shirt and Threadless is here to make money. And I'm sure this shirt will sell out fast. But it would have been nice, given that they only choose so many designs per year, if they'd have chosen one that had more design cleverness than schadenfreude.
bombshield
   bombshield on Jan 09 '07 at 11:29am
Ghetto is a very derogatory word. I mean let's look at what it has been used to describe.

1. the sections of town used to confine Jews during the Holocaust, by brute force.

2. the sections of town used to confine the African American, Latino, and other minority communties by economic force..and sometimes brute force.

Honestly, do you think they really want to be around that stuff?

Yeah, so not a very good look. Unless of course, you're extremely proud of police tape, guns laying in the street, and young people dying for stupid causes; then, by all means, wear this shirt like you have no other!

Personally, I feel that the only way we can all coexist in this world if we can all just learn to make fun of each other without fear of violence toward stupid things.

Sorry, but I don't think being able to "make fun of each other" is the answer. Not everyone has the same sense of humor, reaching that point is going to be impossible. And why do so many people here seem to have a problem with being concerned about how someone else feels? It's the height of arrogance to say, "Ah, shaddup and get over it. it's funny because I say it is, so LAUGH!!!" Who died and made them King of How You're Supposed To Feel... or something like that. If someone says they're offended, how about listening instead of dismissing their emotions as stupid. Geez....
