I dont think you people know what the "ghetto" is, sorry. I must say that this shirt will offend people. I dont think its cool to showcase this type of work or try to create a funny slogan so people that live on the north side can wear it and say that they are cool by wearing a shirt like this!

I agree fully with LucretiaMott. Shirt--whatever, offensive or not, whatever. Implying that there are these gun-toting vigilanties running around interested in risking their lives to make a point about your stupid shirt--totally offensive. Who lives in ghettos? Poor people. Primarily poor people who don't give a rat's hoohah about what's printed on your $50 sweatshirt. Wear what you want. It's not likely to get you shot. Yelled at? Possibly. It might also be in poor taste to wear such a shirt during your hours spent down at the shelter handing out canned foods. Man, that would be offensive.

you know, i've bought a lot of shirts through my husbands account, and once a upon a time I thought I would start my own because I thought it might be fun to partipate in an online community about t-shirts and the design of.

Boy, was I wrong.

Every once in a while I come back to see if things have lightened up. But no.

Really, look at these comments. A lot of them are mean and harrassing--what does it say about us when talking about t-shirts restorts to verbally puching one another in the face?
orangejulius
orangejulius on Jan 15 '07 at 9:54pm
Might as well have a shirt that says "shoot me, niggas!"

or "I'm Michael Richards' biggest fan!"

J-Ray do you find it ironic that while you (obviously) find the shirt offensive, you've implied that only black people originate from the ghetto ?
Lucretia Mott
Lucretia Mott on Jan 15 '07 at 9:59pm
You know what would have been more offensive? Having them print "Greetings from the Ghetto" with photos of the holocaust in the letters. You know, like the original ghetto? Yup, THAT would have been offensive.

Cmon. If that T shirt is the most offensive thing in your life then you should be frickin thankful! Plus, i don't think people from a real ghetto hang out on threadless.com. lol

"Uh, you know threadless is a company and not a human being, riiiight?"

Haha, you guys and your comments... so funny. Let's see if I can respond in a typical condescending voice that you may be accustomed to: "Um, you do know that a singular collective can be personified, yeah? Thought so."

More hilarity: "J-Ray do you find it ironic that while you (obviously) find the shirt offensive, you've implied that only black people originate from the ghetto?"

No, I've implied that, in America, it's more likely to offend "black" people (more likely than Jews, in fact), since there is such a high occurrence of poverty in "black" neighborhoods.

J-Ray on Jan 16 '07 at 1:57am
There have been ghettos BEFORE the holocaust. Don't act smarter because you know there were ghettos during WWII. In fact, smart ass, the first actual ghetto was established in 1516 in Venice, although if you argue that a ghetto is definitively a poor part of a city occupied by a minority group, you could go back much further.

well, i live in the ghetto and i find this shirt not only to be true, but funny as hell. i see every one of those things depicted on the shirt on a weekly basis and if you can't poke fun at something so tragic, then it makes it that much more tragic. viva la ghetto.

I would definitely wear this... because everyone in the state beats on my hometown for being ghetto, and full of ghetto people... with one of the highest violent crime rates per capita in the country, as far as I know.

Gotta represent.

J Ray Chill out. I was just saying that this isn't a horribly offensive shirt, it's just kind of tacky. I know there have been ghettos pre-Warsaw. Calm down.

raha on Jan 16 '07 at 11:41pm
I'm not talking to anyone in particular, but to those claiming we are too sensitive you should remember something....

Once you've been a part of a ghetto, or even poor for that matter, I will guarantee you will not find this funny. It's quite obvious the intent of this shirt is to be comedic and if it's ignorantly toted around on the shoulders of some spoiled youth, it makes it that much more resenting.

I'm pretty sure the poor population doesn't like to be reminded of the crap they have to deal with daily, where they live and what their economic status is. Working a dead end job 10 hours a day is slavery in my book. Enslaved by society and the elites who rule it.

Regardless of what you think, people will be offended by this shirt because it ridicules their life. It's not the gangs and teens who will find this offensive, but those who are trying. The ones who want something better than the shit-hole they're locked inside of. Most likely they'll never see it, but it just pisses me off.

It's fine to offend other people to an extent and sometimes it is even necessary, but what point does this shirt serve? I work with the poor and underprivileged on a daily basis and it really is saddening that some people have so much, and others have so little. Don't feel the need to rub it in, I know it may not seem like that's what it is to you, but it is to some and that's just fucking mean.
Lucretia Mott
Lucretia Mott on Jan 16 '07 at 11:48pm
I think you're being a tad bit presumptuous about the people who think this shirt is funny. I don't disagree with what you said, but I think you should reevaluate your assumptions.
raha
raha on Jan 16 '07 at 11:54pm
No, I don't really care what they think about the shirt. I care about what they don't seem to realize.

I didn't mean to rant but it was geared more toward those claiming that some are overly-sensitive to the topic.

All about me

I live in Chicago, specifically on the Southwest side of the city in Little Village. I have worked for some major companies focusing on, but not limited to, graphic arts including packaging and web design. More recently, I have used this experience to teach and explore art with students ranging in age. Working with students to create art and obtain a voice through their work has been fulfilling and added to my own inspiration.
