I dont think you people know what the "ghetto" is, sorry. I must say that this shirt will offend people. I dont think its cool to showcase this type of work or try to create a funny slogan so people that live on the north side can wear it and say that they are cool by wearing a shirt like this!

Just because the company's founded on the North side, I don't see why there needs to be the separation... obviously they're cognisent of the rest of their city. Some of the Threadless employees might even live further south. And it's not like Threadless' only clientele is from gentrified areas... I'd say it's pretty accessible as far as online business goes.

So it's not just going to be "people from the north side".

No, but to say that the city is united is... only true when it comes to the city government... the actual city- it's damn segregated.

a funny project would be to see some white kid walking thru the west side with this shirt on. my guess is, the kind of people who buy this would never set foot there anyway, so i guess its a non-issue.

I work for a Federal Government agency that is located in an urban, downtown area and I would totally wear that shirt on casual Friday!!!

My claimant's already get a kick out of my "I'd rather be fighting "The Man" " shirt!

Besides...That's what the First Amendment is for anyway...

Whining bores me.

Where I come from, we have one of the highest murder and crime rates in the country and I would totally wear this. We have shirts that say, "Come back to Saginaw.. we missed you the first time!" with a smoking pistol on it and no one gets bent out of shape.

It's the American way to make jokes out of situations you're uncomfortable with.

I don't believe in gangs. With that said, I don't like this shirt, just because I don't think it's absolutely amazing. Also, if I wore it, I'd lose a few teeth from those gangs that I don't believe in.

Dang, will somebody who is in the camp that thinks this shirt is harmless PLEASE buy one wear it to the "hood" so we can see what happens and end this discussion. If you walk through and nothing happens, it's a great shirt. If you get capped, we know it's offensive to someone in the ghetto. Case closed. I'm all for voicing opinions, but now it's redundant.

"This shirts if offensive"

"shut up, overly sensitive person"

"it's offensive"

"you're senstitive"

"you got chocolate in my peanut butter..."

so i sorta noticed the big to-do over the princess soilder shirt, and thought, wow--people must be really riled ove this one. tina-tinkle-toes, for expample, gets sand in her cheeks over a sarcastic shirt about male vs female sterotypes.... yet is totally ok with a shirt that is poking fun at poverty and a serious problem in society.

both shits got the scores to be printed, so enough people liked them. so that must say something about the masses that frequent threadless.

raszor
raszor on Jan 11 '07 at 1:52am
I don't think score matters when it has a lot of $ 'I'd buy it'.

This shirt actually really ashames me though. I live in Australia and I don't really know what happens if you wore something like this around in America (if it would be commonly OK or not) but the design itself is terrible. Threadless is full of awesome and funny submitted designs with a lot (and I mean A LOT) of style waiting to be picked for printing.

For something like this to be printed over the other masterpieces is very sadening and reduces the threadless awesomeness. It's like a type tee in the threadless section with patterns in the middle.

Sorry for the criticism. Just my expressed opinion

i'm not going to bother joining either side on saying this is or isn't racist. intentions only go so far, interpretation is another story... what does alarm me is the fact that everyone offended by this t-shirt seems to be okay with the idea that a person could or would be shot for what they are wearing and that this would be the "obvious" outcome.

vwaites, how about you actually READ my posts, instead of assuming things that lack all evidence. The perpetrating stereotypes shirt does NOT piss me off- in fact, I'll probably buy it. What pissed me off was people thinking they were so smart and funny when they made misogynistic jokes to be ironic. That's just dumb.

Oh, yeah, and the welcome to the ghetto shirt DOES offend me.

I don't know how you mixed up my opinions. I would like it very much if you would stop making up lies about me. thank you, bi-otch!

"Might as well have a shirt that says "shoot me, niggas!"

or "I'm Michael Richards' biggest fan!
""

umm. not really at all actually.

it's simple. the shirt isn't very controversial or mean or anything. all it does is push slight stereotypes about a certain place which doesn't even have an absolute location.

if this shirt offends you, which it really shouldn't, then DONT BUY it.
T045TBR0T
T045TBR0T on Jan 11 '07 at 7:05pm
I don't think it pushes stereotypes... after all, a Ghetto is not a stereotype, it's a description for certain regions where a certain group of people (be it a race, a social class, victims of one disease) are held, seperated from the others. Of course, in modern Ghettos, this seperation is not done by the government, but still. It's NOT a stereotype.

My first thought about this was something like:

"Yeah, that's it... people know there are Ghettos, they might go there to look at it, but are they gonna DO anything? No. They'll be all 'I was in the ghetto, I know' and just go on with their lives."

I think this shirt is just a remider that there is a serious problem not too far from some of our doorsteps and everybody knows, but nobody takes action.

true that, k lady

I wasn't expecting that the person would answer, oh and I was being absolutely and completely serious...

My point is, vwaites made a false statement about me, that's all... the rest was ornamentation... so completely serious ornamentation. I might be a little crazy, but I'm not THAT insane.

as someone who is from what can be generalized as "the ghetto" of my city and as a friend of victims of street violence i find this shirt offensive because it trivializes the danger that people who live in "the ghetto" live with everyday in order to make a cute t-shirt for some kid from the suburbs. the ghetto's not cute when you spend the day before thanksgiving wondering whether your friend got shot in the leg or the head.

I live in the ghetto, and I live here by choice. I am trying to make a difference in my "Ghetto" not with cute t-shirt designs but by actions! This shirt is just a reflection of how this city is segregated and how some certain neighborhoods have the luxury of wearing a shirt that is "cool" and they really have no idea of what living in the ghetto really is. I really hope they kill this design.
tina-tinkle-toes
tina-tinkle-toes on Jan 11 '07 at 11:20pm
it is a bit ironic- the fact that the shirt is playing off of how people percieve the ghetto and what the actual harsh reality- and the people who seem to be the most interested in buying it are the people who aren't from the ghetto.

go, elartista! yay for action!

I don't think that the shirt was made to offend people, but the reality of the situation is that it WILL offend many people, especcially when they see priviliged white kids wearing it as a joke. And many people believe that it's not the place of others to make fun of what they classify as "the ghetto." I also hope they kill the design; it's really inappropriate.

meh...if you can afford to be buying frivilous internet shirts I'm pretty sure you're not from "the ghetto"...and people make light of violence and unfortunate situations all the time. Let's all calm down and pretend we can handle a little joking every so often from a t-shirt site that is 99.9% full of ridiculous nonsense.
bloomtransp

I knew someone would be bothered by this shirt. This design is a parody, and to say that someone would be offended by it is just a comment on their intelligence.
cujoelwally
cujoelwally on Jan 13 '07 at 3:13pm
I think this shirt is pretty innapropriate as well. I have no problem with material that could be offensive, but this just strikes me as stupid. With the continued use of the word "ghetto," we're only diminishing how terrible the actual ghettos that Jews were forced into in WW2 Germany. If any of us had actually been in or seen a ghetto, we'd probably have been killed in a concentration camp. Yes, there are areas of the United States that are very depraved and poverty-striken, but I don't think that calling them "the ghetto" is at all appropriate.
tina-tinkle-toes
tina-tinkle-toes on Jan 13 '07 at 3:24pm
bloomtransp, we all get that it's a parody and that's ironic and supposed to be funny- but some of us aren't laughing, and that has nothing to do with level of intelligence.

I thin kthis whole "if you wore it in the city you would get shot" thing is absolutely absurd, and far more offensive than the shirt. It's not gang colors, it's a stupid joke. Do you really think you would get shot for wearing this in the "bad" neighborhoods? You may look like a douchebag and get some bad looks, but I can't imagine any serious physical altrications.

Plus the implication that people in bad neighborhoods are all premenstral, gunweilding, maniacs rubs me in the wrong way.

My designs

All about me

I live in Chicago, specifically on the Southwest side of the city in Little Village. I have worked for some major companies focusing on, but not limited to, graphic arts including packaging and web design. More recently, I have used this experience to teach and explore art with students ranging in age. Working with students to create art and obtain a voice through their work has been fulfilling and added to my own inspiration.
