Words of Widsom for Threadless Newbies

Hey all,

As you may or may not know, I'm one of the copywriters here and working on our gargantuan site redesign project (some of you met me this weekend. Hi yous!). We know that as it stands now, the whole Threadless process ain't so clear to newcomers. So we're working to make that better!

Think back very very hard to when you were a newbie. Maybe you were just lurking around on the blogs, or maybe you were a sad panda because the awesome design you submitted got dropped from voting early. What do you know now that you wish you had known then?

I wish I knew more so what the printers could print, I thought it was only vector artwork so I would take forever working on something I usually take like 5 minutes on, just making it vector.

So maybe some descriptions of what artists are allowed to submit and what we can print etc

As a newbie I didn't know that clicking the # takes you to the last comment. Or that promoting my subs in the bluhgs affects my scores maybe 0.01 points or less

hello!

just off the top of my head;

You cannot edit comments, post carefully
You can delete blogs easily, inside the edit function
Scoring and commenting on designs is encouraged/expected if you'd like feedback on your stuff
The 'popular' button is silly/capricious
Low scores on designs are not the worst thing
'watch' is also a useful feature

i remember i didn't involve myself in the blogs at all early on. i don't really know why but i bumbled around not knowing anything about the place for a few months. all became clear once i paid attention and got to know people. my advice to newbies would be "read the blogs", whether they seem relevant or not.

TALK TO SOMEONE. Anyone! I lurked forever before finally talking to someone (FRICKINAWESOME) and once I did I was way more comfortable.

When I was new I thought all the people in the design templates were the people submitting the designs.

Don't get discouraged. But seriously, if a bunch of people tell you no one would wear your design, going off like a whiny kid isn't going to help your situation. If you want to print your scribbles and are clearly to classy for Threadless, go to Cafe Press. If you realize the design element isn't for you, but you have ideas, ask to work with another designer. I did that three times (twice under my name and once with martiandrivein) and though no prints came out of it, I have no regrets.

Questions that I've had are

What are the standard dimensions of a design that'll print to cover most of the shirt?
What are the dimensions of a design to do all over or belt printing?
If our design is a raster file, then should we separate the colors ourselves or leave it to TL? And should our color seps be anti-aliased or not or does it matter?

Questions asked a lot on the blogs:

How do I know if TL chose my design?
How long does it take for me to know whether I get printed?
