Threadless

JxE aka Jean-Eric is a 26.37 year old boy, has been a member since June 27, 2005, has scored 5,457 submissions, giving an average score of 0.77, helping 36 designs get printed.
This contest was made to "inspire something new, something fresh, something original." This was supposed to be a unique design that took Threadless to the next level and pushed the limits.

This design is just like the same old stuff that's been on here. Can someone please tell me what's new, fresh and original about this? I was looking forward to seeing what amazing design would win this contest, but I'm honestly dissapointed.

There's nothing wrong with the design itself, I guess I was just expecting more from the Threadless hearts Threadless competition.

I kind of agree. I'm trying to convince myself to love it and to buy it, but I'm not crazy about it at this second. My feelings may change though. I just put in a huge order and my next one will prob be Weds so i can buy my fav Tues/Weds tees.

It's a nice design....but as a design for a tee, I'm not sure

i think it's a great design, and pretty much what threadless would have been wanting... but.. i wanted something that would make me pass out with joy... and then wake up all confused, only to realise why i passed out, and then pass out again.

this is more like 'oh thats very nice'.

I'm not into it either, but then again I don't choose the winners :(

Though I don't think it's horrible mind you. It's got kind of an interesting look, the flow, the shape, but it just isn't very aesthetically pleasing on a t-shirt. Congrats to the winner though!

i thought it was a slug. i bet it looks better in person than on-screen
tesco
   tesco on Aug 14 '06 at 3:38pm
but look at the submissions for the competition. was there really anything that was 'next level'? I mean, how next level can tshirts get, anyway? The fact that there was nothing truely groundbreaking submitted makes this, for me, a deserving winner.
Robotron5
Robotron5 on Aug 14 '06 at 3:39pm
I think that the shirt pales in comparison to Gef, he steals the show in that pic
shirtflirt
shirtflirt on Aug 14 '06 at 3:41pm
taking something we look at all the time, and making that, assuming it was a graphic design already, a t shirt design would've been groundbreaking..

for instance, a letter....

and we already had a Psychedelic elephant...what's next?

Psychedelic cat

Psychedelic platypus?

unless i'm missing a hidden message in the tail feathers.

nice work but not what i expected from this contest.

well out of the 87 comments it recieved all were extremely positive everyones coming out of the woodworks to complain about this shirt now. and lol@"no birds" and a bird won.

This design sucks. I'm sorry but someone has to say it. It's weak as hell.
Rock Deputy
Rock Deputy on Aug 14 '06 at 3:53pm
I totally think it's 'next level'.. using simply straight and curved lines to create the patterns on the feathers is brilliant.

remember, people... the contest was to try and get innovative designs - not popular designs. if popularity was the goal then Glennz would be hoisting the MacBook...

corneli23 on Aug 14 '06 at 3:53pm
Yeah it's a well done design... but I was REALLY looking forward to an awesome shirt... not an interesting yet beautiful design that looks very unappealing on a shirt... congratulations though :)
mikemills
   mikemills on Aug 14 '06 at 3:53pm
It's an incredibly intricate and tightly executed design - most shirts I can look at and at least figure out how they did it, or where the idea might've originated. This one blows my mind.

And the idea behind them saying "no birds" was obviously just a way of saying don't use them in a played-out way (mean, sinister crows and other dark/evil birds - not that I'd know anything about that).

I do admit I'd rather see this shirt on a girl, but it's a deserving piece of art.

JxE on Aug 14 '06 at 3:54pm
@tesco

Sure a lot of the stuff wasn't next level, but there were definitely things that were original to threadless. Things that have never been done. I saw some amazing hand drawn designs that weren't cartoony, designs that used the whole shirt as a canvas, etc.

This is just like everything else.

i've bitched enough about the shirt lately, so all I'll say is that I'm not at all randy about this shirt, nor does it fancy me in any way.

Yet, the tail does remind me of an O'Keefe'-esque vagina
UberRyan
UberRyan on Aug 14 '06 at 3:56pm
and why would you give it a $0?

that basically states that you hate it, but you'd buy it.

hence the $ symbol

i think for the longest time folks were afraid to sub anything with an intricate pattern that might be hard to register, after hearing tales of how a halftone or pattern got fucked up and had to be resubmitted or changed (something we guess not...- and king's cobra, to name 2)...so if anything, maybe the 'trend' it will start is giving people the courage to submit patterns again, or otherwise simple designs.

and tesco, you like ANYTHING that's cmyk, you design whore! :)

agree 100% - i wish i could get this in a poster (as I wouldn't wear the shirt) but either way, it is a great print with great use of color and movement.

i agree. i loved some of the ones that were like fill-in-your-own words, or 'sets' of shirts...truly new and interesting ideas for tees.

I think mikemills said it best, as a designer I'm marvelling at the patterns executed on the tail and wondering how he came up with it.

I think it's pretty obvious that this shirt appeals to designers over the general public.

When I first saw that I thought, "How did I miss that design? I don't even remember it!"

Then I noticed I had given it a 1 and just moved on...probably just because I didn't see what it had to do with "Threadless Loves Threadless" at all. I still don't.

Congrats, anyway! Not like I submitted anything to the contest, so you won't be getting any sour grapes from me.
Cubfan
Cubfan on Aug 14 '06 at 4:14pm
yeah i will admit the feather pattern is neat. unfortunately the image as a whole looks like a slug... or tongue

and I have to reiterate whats already been said, there really much that was 'revolutionary' or that really stood out with the th loves th subs (at lease those that I saw). I don't think it was the strongest competition, despite all of the incentive in the arseload of prizes.

maybe as the quanitity of printed tees increases (18 this week alone), and the quantity of submissions increases, it becomes more difficult to create something that really stands out.

As a young upstart designer I have to say that this shirt is the equivalent of a shit sandwich on moldy white bread.

They should have given the grand prize to the Knights of Templar, as it is too much for any one man.

regardless of rules, I still thinks its an ugly design, and even uglier on a shirt, its like a peacock with a giant psychedlic ballsack

Haha, mike.

Deputy, I disagree -- the "general public" appreciate the artist's talent in weaving lines to create the tail. Anybody could. Would a designer wear this on a shirt as opposed to a normal person? I doubt it.

This one should have won.
