I'm taking a quick opinion poll on my latest design idea. Do you think this shirt needs text saying "Frank Zappa - Hero of the Future"? Or does the design stand well enough on it's own?

I'd leave it out, mate. If you're concerned about people not realizing who it is, maybe bring out the Z on his belt a bit more, possibly even add an F to it?
