i don't like how they are bastardizing all our childhood memories lately.

this new willy wonka thing just doesn't cut the mustard. jonny depp? no. pirate, yes...mysterious chocolate factory owner, no.

they just modernized it and put some famous names in there, added some over-the-top special effects, and they expect an instant hit. no.

Gene Wilder is the only Willy Wonka in my eyes.

its not supposed to be HAPPY! its not. its supposed to be dark...i mean the first one was kinda creepy, but the new one is gonna be all whimsical and cute. euphoric, even.

*le big sad face*

i know a bunch of you are looking forward to it, but i just dont like it.

Keep in mind that this is not a remake of a film. It is a re-visioning of a book.

Im not looking foreward to it.

Mainly because I never liked it.

I understand what you are saying though.

@ fish - it looks like a remake, smells like a remake...therefor it must be.

are people really running out of ideas to entertain themselves?
brokennightmare
brokennightmare on Jun 23 '05 at 5:08pm
Well, uh, apparently so. You know practically every horror movie lately has been (aside from just bad) remakes of Japanese films or older films. Same as the other movies, a bunch are adapted from comics and remakes and blah blah blah.

I am looking forward to this movie though. I'm not used to seeing Johnny Depp so strange and happy looking and I'm curious as to what he can do with it.
tammyleino
tammyleino on Jun 23 '05 at 5:08pm
Christopher Walken would have been the best Willy Wonka ever! Ahh, I can dream... Anyway, Johnny Depp looks like a total freak in this movie. I will not see it. It weirds me out.

pg1101 on Jun 23 '05 at 5:14pm
I'm looking forward to this movie, but yes I see where you are coming from.

addition to what brokiennightmare said, reason being they remake the japenese films is to but it in english so we understand, most of the time they try to get the director of the original to help with this one, for say the dude who directed the Grudge also directed the original.
Pifman
Pifman on Jun 23 '05 at 5:21pm
1. This is a re-vision of the original BOOK. Not the movie (as RE said).

2. Do you even know who directed it? Tim "mother fuckin" Burton. As in Sleepy Hallow Tim Burton. Nightmare Before Christmas Tim Burton. I'm taking a wild guess that it's not going to be some "whimsical and cute" movie made for kiddies. Although Tim himself has said some weird things about the creepy factor. We'll just have to find out.

3. They didn't just simply "add some over-the-top special effects" seeing as how he wanted as much as possible to be real. Props and what not. Hell they even built a real chocolate river (but not real chocolate).

4. Don't get me wrong, the original is one of my favorites. In my top 3 actually. But PLEASE please do not judge this movie until you've seen it. Sure, you may not find it to be better than the original, but please don't categorize it as just another remake trying to make money. Yes there are plenty out there, but this isn't one of 'em.

It isn't a remake. Did you read the book?

The first movie - which was required to use the title of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory because the Dahl family was so disappointed with their rendition that they forbade them to use "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and halted the production of the sequel of "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator" - was based on the book, but wasn't very close to the book.

This new one is pretending the first movie didn't exist and making a movie rendition of the book.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Gene Wilder version.

But it is definately not a remake.

It's like saying that the musical The Phantom Of The Opera was based on the Lon Chaney movie.
Pifman
Pifman on Jun 23 '05 at 5:25pm
Also an interesting note, the new one's not a musical. I guess that makes sense, but how weird is that? The first one's pretty much all singing. Heh.

little_hobbit_feet on Jun 23 '05 at 5:32pm
Also, don't look for a Slugworth Stealing The Gobstopper subplot, because it won't be there.
trendwhore
trendwhore on Jun 23 '05 at 5:44pm
You also seem to have forgotten that the movie is directed by Tim Burton. That speaks for it self. Johnny Depp is an amazing actor he'll do a great job.

As many others have said this is a vision of the book. Tim Burtons vision of the book and he hasn't disappointed before.
Brennando
Brennando on Jun 23 '05 at 5:58pm
Tim Burton will do a wonderful job. Nothing will really stand up to the original, but I'm sure he'll do the best job possible.

for shame.

another reason the gene wilder version was named Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was bc part of the reason the film was made was to sell candy bars, the plan was to release willy wonka bars and the movie at the same time, but right before the release of the movie there was some defect with the chocolate, so all the candy was recalled.

from what i've seen on the commercials, the special effects dont look that over the top. nothing someone with basic knowledge in Adobe After Effects couldnt figure out.

@ pifman - a real chocolate river with no real chocolate? come again...

@ trendwhore - your name states it all...

@ little_hobbit_feet - its not the remakes that get to me...its the bastardization of the original that gets to me.

the original was fine...why not do a DIFFERENT book? why not do Through the Looking Glass? burton would have a blast with that.

*sigh*

i understand tim burton blahblahblah new take on the movie blahblahblah...please, keep restating the same facts. it amuses me

but what i don't understand is the need for it. with all the brill minds out there they feel the need to re--oops, my bad...reVISION the book yet again?

PATRICKwMORGAN on Jun 23 '05 at 6:31pm
Wait. Didn't someone already say this? It's NOT a remake of ANY movie. It's TIM BURTON's take one the book. You guys DO know that some movies are based off of books? And that MULTIPLE movies can be based off of the same book.

It's just Burton's take.
Pifman
Pifman on Jun 23 '05 at 6:35pm
Okay, did you not read any of the things we said 10 times? It's not remaking the movie, it's remaking the book. You know how many takes there have been on Shakespear's books? Or even how many movies about one event, like WWII. Also, I meant that it's a real fucking river and not some stupid over-the-top special fucking effect.

Who knows? Maybe the movie will suck. But that's just it, we don't know yet, and neither do you. So don't judge it before you've seen it. Have you ever even read the book? And have you seen the actual trailer? Opposed to the short weird ones they've been showing on TV? Here, go here and watch it. I was pleasantly comforted after doing so, maybe you will be too.

http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/charliechocolatefactory/

Also, the kid playing Charlie is a god damn brilliant actor, better than most adults actually. (see: Finding Neverland, Batman Begins)

Lookit all the Dracula movies.

Trashcan: Willard was a horror movie about a man who befriended rats and a lot of people hated it. They remade it starring Crispin Glover and it failed because everybody remembered how bad the first one and didn't go.

Incidentally, the second Willard was pretty good.

Don't look for a remake of Ben, though.

i kinda like that...but i'm a claymation whore.

back on subject...

yes, PATRICwMORGAN...people have made this point quite clear.

maybe i should get my video camera and do a nice Harry Potter movie...after all, it wouldn't be a remake. i could call it Harry the Wonderful Wizard...

@ pif - i never said it was gonna suck...i just said i didn't like the (goddamnit, i am gonna say it) remaking of the book/movie/whatever.

personally, its on my 'to see' list...i think its gonna be pretty spiffy...can't someone be dissapointed in the idea but still have a curiosity about it? i just don't like the idea of the remaking

remaking

remaking...

Without having read everyone else's posts, I'll pitch in my 2 cents. I'll state this. For nostalgic purposes, the first movie will always be near and dear to my heart, as will Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka.

That being said, the first movie was no, in any way shape or form "dark."

Secondly, to say that Johnny Depp can't play dark, eccentric, and quirky, it tantamount to saying that the Pope can't play catholic. See, Edward Scissorhands, Dead Man, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Ed Wood...

Finally, to bring Roald Dahl's work to life, I can't think of anyone better suited than Tim Burton, especially with Johnny Depp. With the possible exception of Terry Gilliam, but Gilliam gets a little to esoteric sometimes.

So, that being said, I do look forward to it, and I expect it to be truer to the book than the first version.

little_hobbit_feet
little_hobbit_feet on Jun 23 '05 at 6:54pm
"because that would be too much like right... "

Still doesn't make sense. It seems like an incomplete thought.

And I find it interesting that your concern is over the bastardization of the original when the original was the book and it was bent over a table thoroughly buggered by the first movie.
MrDomino
   MrDomino on Jun 23 '05 at 7:04pm
A freind's mom worked for Willy Wonka and that first movie was literally nothing more than a giant publicity stunt to launch the brand name.

I don't mind a remake when it's done well, we'll see if that's the case here.

betsuni04, yeah, i saw the trailer for the corpse bride. i`m really looking foward to seeing it. it looks so distubring, i love it. i really didn`t know that johnny depp was playing willy wonka at first. his face looks like it`s made of 100% plaster o_o

of the preview of the squel that i saw, the new factory and everything looked kinda creepy and i also think the movie will also be funny. johnny depp is an interesting choice to play "Charlie". i'm looking forward to watching the movie but i hope it lives up to the hype.

Hate to break it to ya Anti-Smiley, but Johnny Depp doesn't play Charlie, he plays Willy Wonka. The head honcho himself.

'Claymation' is done with clay. 'Stop Motion Animation' is done with models. Big difference.

I LOVE the original movie, but that damned Charlie sucked SO BAD it hurt. Hopefully, Burton will inject his charm into it. He's not flawless, but I give him some credit. I mean, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. BEST MOVIE EVER!

It'll be good to have both movies.

i didn't read all the comments, but pretty much everything i said has already been said, so i'll be breif...

its not a "re-make": its a movie based upon a book, a book which happens to already have a movie made based on it. have you read the book?

did you notice tim burton is the director? take a look at his other films, then re-think your ideas about it being simply whimsical and cute.

sigh...anyways....don't see it if you don't want to, i doubt anyone would try to convince you otherwise. but it's silly to be so close minded about something that has the potential to be really amazing.

As said earlier, it's not a remake of a movie but a book. Notice this will be called Charlie and The Chocolate Factory(after the book of course) as the old move was Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory. Tim Burton is genius and has yet to let me down, plus Burton and Depp work great together, in my eyes, best director/actor duo yet.

Wait, wait, wait... you mean there's people out there that actually liked the Planet of the Apes remake by ol' Timmy? Now that's devotion. Don't get me wrong, this movie looks great, but I'll decide after I'm done watching it whether or not it was a waste of time/money.

One of my favorite childhood books. I'm happy for another director's perspective, especially Tim Burton's. And his work with Depp has yet to let me down.

Personally, I'm glad they're doing the new movie. I hated the Gene Wilder one (although I love Gene Wilder), and thought they bastardized the book. All the singing, and the stupid Slugworth sub-plot was awful. I'm glad Tim Burton is actually going to try to do the book justice this time.
