So do you think this shirt is better than my sort of similar submission Family Business? I'm not trying to be a prick, I'm just seriously asking (to get some outsider perspective).

So which one do you think makes a better Threadless tee? Hopefully I'll get better at designing shirts over time, with enough advice and practice.

They are both really good, I think yours is funnier though

Your design is good and is executed very well... But the only similarity I see is in the inspiration... The poster T is more like souvenir shirt from an event, which I like a bit more than the family portrait--but only because of personal preference.

I prefer the idea of the poster shirt but the typography is pretty awful on the winning shirt so... erm... is it OK to say I'm not really keen on either?

Can you tell me why you think the typography is awful on that shirt? I think it looks pretty decent. Hell, I've even ordered one!

both good labels is more suited for a t-shirt imo. yeah, the typography could be alot tighter, but I thought that was intentional?

I did think it was intentional. That's what the typography is like on those posters usually and that's what makes them fun.

Yes, the typography I used is what you normally see here in mexico on luchador posters. Its funny because those are some sweet ass posters and the typography totally makes it even cooler. They tend to use this retro type feel to it as well as some really tacky fonts. As for your design pifman, I think it has an excellent execution. Its pretty funny. It makes and excellent graphic. I just don't think it would be suitable for a tee shirt. Not many people like family portraits. Guess it has to do with childhood memories and horrible pictures envolving K-mart.

Heh yeah. Thanks for all the comments everyone. To tell the truth I really dig label's design and am considering getting it. The foil ink really put it over the edge.

The only reason I made this blog was to create discussion on somewhat similar topics and in turn hopefully guide my designing hand.

"Can you tell me why you think the typography is awful on that shirt?"

Certainly can. Generally it looks like a student sampler of free fonts (at least 5 different typefaces). I understand the appeal of vernacular typography but this just doesn't ring true. It doesn't look like naive letterpress or screen-printing or sign-writing, it looks like bad DTP. I don't really have a problem with the font choices, it's the implementation.

I've always had a problem with distressed fonts mixing with crisply rendered type because it's obvious that the distressing is pure effect and has nothing to do with the print process. It is, therefore, pretentious. But this might be a personal thing...

Specific issues with the kerning (or lack of):

The gap between "Gran" and "Hermano" is too big. The gap between "El" and "Liberal" is way too big. "B" "E" and "R" in "Liberal" need to be kerned tighter. Similarly below the headline fight both "El"s should be closer to "Toileto" and "Chori".

Specific issues with the spacing:

There's an embarassing space in the middle of the shirt with the (for some reason) negatively spaced "contra" crouching to the left of the bar and then... nothing. The space surrounding "El Liberal" is much bigger than "Gran Hermano" and it's not helped that it's also inset (presumably to make way for the utterly redundant decorative flourishes that really don't match the typeface, the distressed borders or the overall look of the shirt). It's not really a fair comparison but the extremely tight typographic logo of the "Angels and Demons" shirt is an almost perfect rebuke to this sort of thing.

Obviously I could be accused of taking all this far too seriously (...), it's a joke isn't it? Well, yes, but is the sloppiness really a true reflection of Mexican vernacular design? If not, it's not a parody. For me all that haphazardly placed type floating in a sea of blue foil would just do my head in.

Hell, I don't want to stop anyone ordering though...

Anyone else got an opinion on the typography? Am I really the only one who has a problem with this?

your designs are too different to really compare, the only similarity is blue and wrestling.

One looks like a poster/indie style, which is its appeal. Yours is an actual image kind of thing.
