(First of all, I apologize for the length of this in advance)

The point of this "blog" is to not only ask why there isn't a private messaging function on this site, but also discuss how important it could be as a feature.

There are 3 basic ways I can currently contact another member of Threadless. Keep in mind, that all of which are more difficult than a simple private message. One, if said person "happens" to have and use AIM then they can leave their screen name, and then you can reach them through that if you "happen" to have and use it also. I personally don't know anyone who uses it (maybe MSN Messenger, but not AIM). Two, if you happen to leave your email address in your profile. But as most people know, leaving your email address on a random site is a sure fire way to get your name added to plenty of spam lists. Not only that, but if I wanted to go through the trouble of actually emailing somebody, they then know my email address and some people can get picky about who has their email address. Me included. Third reason, and possibly the most annoying... Starting an entire blog (for all to see in the Blog Forum section) just to talk to a single person, or ask one person a question.

So how do you resolve all of these problems? Simple. Add a private messaging system to this site (and here's the SIMPLE part!) - It would work EXACTLY the way the Blog Forum already works! But instead the only person(s) who could read it would be to who you sent it to. Here's an example of what it could look like when you've got some messages in your inbox...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Simple. Clean. And you wouldn't even need to clutter things up with options like "Outbox", "Sentbox", "Savebox" or any of that. I know this site is really stripped down and simple to use, so it wouldn't be a problem. And when you clicked on that number (right next to your name) it would bring you to a section that looked JUST like your profile page looks right now. Your profile pic on the left (submitted designs under that obviously) and private messages (topic and then message) off to the right. And here's the genius part! When somebody gets your private message and you reply back and forth a few times it saves all of the them in the ONE original message, blog, thingy. Much like combining how Gmail works (saving replys in 'conversations' rather than seperate emails) and how your current Blog Forum works now. I guess you could consider it Private Blogging between 2 (or maybe 3 or 4??) people. God this would work so well it almost hurts.

So! It's example time. Let's say I want to ask "User X" a question about how he got his shirt design to look that way. Well I don't want to bother everyone and post it in the forum for all to see, and I don't want to leave it as a comment on one of his shirt designs and clutter things up with a personal question. So what would I do, I'd click "Send User X a Private Message." I'd give it a Title, type out my question, then hit send. Done. Then when he got around to answering my question he wouldn't even need to make a new message, just add a reply in the box (just like leaving a comment) and it would send the same message back to me and then it'd say that I have 1 new message in my Inbox. So on and so forth.

Actually, I'm sure some of you have AudioScrobbler accounts? They've got a private messaging feature and not only is it not needed as much as this site needs one, but this site has the HUGE advantage of keeping all replies in the same message. Also, I forgot to mention that discarding messages would be as easy as discarding blog entries.

Okay, so I'll stop there. And for the Threadless workers, PLEASE voice your opinion on this in here or elsewhere (I'll also be sending you emails with all of these questions and ideas). Thanks for reading all of this! I'm just trying to help make this site even better than it already is.

Damn son... great idea! I always wondered why this feature wasn't available considering the only way you can communicate with someone is by posting on an existing blog that may have nothing to do with what you're commenting about or start a completely different blog altogether. I think Threadless should seriously consider adding this feature.
_Wheels03
   _Wheels03 on Jul 06 '05 at 3:47pm
... and by the word "communicate", I mean only being able to comminicate using this site. I never really thought about e-mailing someone or using msn/aim.

wemetnnam on Jul 06 '05 at 3:48pm
my only concern with this is that private messages and blogs, etc, turn Threadless into more of a normal online MySpace-esque community and takes the focus off of the actual shirts. Threadless is a place where people can buy, design and rate awesome tee shirts. Not where people connect and chat. In my own opinion.
thatsnotnormal
thatsnotnormal on Jul 06 '05 at 3:56pm
but the other side of threadless is it is a community that supports eachother in this- so, something like a blog is great for things like "how do you guys get your ideas" or "what do you think of this design" or other public everyone related things like issues with the site shipping issues etc BUT then there's times when things are between a few select people which is a pain for the rest of us.

SO, although i see what you're saying i think the reason for the blog and maybe a reason for private messanging is that threadless is an online community not just a bunch of single random people that don't talk to eachother and just buy shirts and score subs

Whatchoo talkin' bout, wemetnnam?

just kidding, but I guess I can see your point, eventhough I don't think that something like private messaging will turn this place into myspace or livejournal. If anything, it would make this community even closer.
Avelien
Avelien on Jul 06 '05 at 3:57pm
Yeah, I got the Wetmetnnam, 'caus we could just talk to eachother on Myspace then...

BUT it is just to everyone to fill in the communication.. In the blog are some useless conversations between 2/3/4 people and that would clean up alot of clutter, if we had personal message system... So much easier for everyone.. and it is your own choice to get in that kind of message-ing...

Pifman on Jul 06 '05 at 4:01pm
wemetnnam: I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. The thing that makes places like MySpace what they are, are tons of stupidly long pages of comments and messages available for all to see. Members, non-members, etc.. Private messaging would actually go AGAINST that by taking care of business behind closed doors. And if your point is that it's not about being a community (which I "somewhat" agree with) then why have a blog forum at all?

If people were private messaging, and I can't tell at all because it doesn't show up anywhere if I'm not involved, then why does that change the look/feel of the site in any which way? I could only see this helping people submit better shirt designs seeing as how they can contact specific members for specific help. I know I've wanted to tons of times.
Pifman
Pifman on Jul 06 '05 at 4:48pm
Also keep in mind that you'd be able to have people contact you personally without trading email addresses. That alone would be worth it. And since it would work VERY similarly to the Blog Forum I don't think it would require that much work at all. I mean, they built this entire site, I'm sure they'd know how to do it just right.

Still no word from an actual Threadless employee. Not here or in email.

I can't imagine that they don't have an opinion about this, or even that they haven't thought of it before. I'm not complaining, I'm just really hoping this has a chance of happening.

ZaneGun08 on Jul 07 '05 at 12:24am
This is a great idea, you are a smart man, I think it would be nice, although I don't need to really contact people on this site. Have you tried contacting the employees about this, like the people at skinnycorp or something, well good idea, I hope it happens, because it would be useful for designers to colaborate ideals

Later

This is a great idea - I've often thought that it would be good for Threadless to have a private messaging system too. It would be so handy for those times when you want to ask someone a specific question, but don't want to bore everyone else rigid with it! :)

Thanks everyone for all the support on this stellar idea. And I especially agree with ZaneGun08's first comment. And also ZaneGun, yes I've also emailed them with the idea but still no response here or there.

PLEASE STEAL THIS IDEA! You've got my FULL permission to use any and all of my ideas (even though I'm sure you guys have thought of this before).

Pifman on Jul 07 '05 at 1:58pm
ALSO! Take this into consideration...

Not every member of Threadless likes to use the Blog Forum (actually I think more don't than do) and the beauty of adding private messaging is that people can access and see their private messages without ever entering the Blog Forum section! Let's say you only like to submit and score designs, well as long as your signed in (which you have to be to do either) it'd say how many messages you have in your inbox at the top of the screen (right next to your username) at all times! It's almost makes too much sense.

Aaaaand (threadless workers) it'd stop all the blog entries like "Hey Shimala or Jakes! Read This!" or "Threadless Crew Please Respond!" since they could easily and quickly contact you personally.

Its a good idea. However, if this upgrade were to occur, they should replace this blog with something more along the lines of a forum. They might as well, since more features are built into most forums.

But I'm impressed. You've put alot of thought into this. You've got my meaningless thumbs up.

shimala on Jul 08 '05 at 4:15pm
My only gripe is along with the standard msgs there will also be hate and spam. Maybe there could be a block user feature or even a setting in your profile to turn msging on or off if you don't want it.

To be honest I would rather have a couple hey shimala blogs than a ton of private msgs sent to me because it answers the question for that one person and all who read it.
_Wheels03
   _Wheels03 on Jul 08 '05 at 4:18pm
I thought about that too. With all the hi5inferno's and bottlesandcan's (same person, right?), you never know how many "Your stuff sucks" or "Threadless blows" messages you're gonna get.
gerpander
gerpander on Jul 08 '05 at 4:19pm
I don't think Threadless' job is to build a messaging system for us, don't really need it IMHO, just supply more tees more often and the riff raff will applaud you with their credit cards.
travis76
   travis76 on Jul 08 '05 at 4:21pm
yes. we do not need instant messaging. blogs answer questions for everyone, if they have the attention span to read....

friends who see me on here remark at what a clean and easy setup the blogs are...compliments all around.
blucow
blucow on Jul 08 '05 at 4:23pm
So you're saying Threadless should just give us the bare minimum? Yeah, I guess I can deal with that. I mean, who wants great service when you can have just decent?

Maybe there could be some sort of buddy system where you only receive messages from certain people? No hate messages from fake accounts...
travis76
   travis76 on Jul 08 '05 at 4:27pm
that would be fine.
gerpander
gerpander on Jul 08 '05 at 4:31pm
I'd rather see Threadless put out more tees than use their resources in creating a messaging system.
blucow
blucow on Jul 08 '05 at 4:35pm
It's not like they need to spend weeks researching and developing a genius messaging system. Every single website with any form of communication I can think of has a system like what Pifman's suggesting.
gerpander
gerpander on Jul 08 '05 at 4:46pm
Every minute spent in creating a messaging system is off of making t-shirts available! No honestly, Pifman has good points but I'm a bit divided about having a messaging system.

I just got weaned out of writing letters on paper for chrissakes.
blucow
blucow on Jul 08 '05 at 4:49pm
So then what about all those precious minutes the Threadless team spends posting in the blog forum? They could've made like, 3 more orders in that time. Ugh, it's an effing crime.
travis76
   travis76 on Jul 08 '05 at 4:52pm
but then this lovely and lengthy discussion would de-evolve into the aplhanumeric grunts that are IM'ing....

and frankly, we don't need any more <3's

shimala on Jul 08 '05 at 4:53pm
We can post and code all we want... it has nothing to do with shirts not getting printed since we don't print them ourselves.

Also in case you didn't know we already run a super forum... http://www.yayhooray.com

SkinnyCorp never fails to amaze me... just discovered 15 Megs of Fame yesterday and now YayHooray...
Pifman
Pifman on Jul 08 '05 at 5:01pm
Well that's just dandy. A spilling handfull of compliments, then the blog sinks to about the 5th page, and THEN when I decide to make a blog about the fact that they're actually gonna do it THEN people post their hate for the idea.

And I'd like to point out two things, it would NOT be instant messaging. It wouldn't act or be like an IM service. Maybe I didn't get my point accross clearly enough, but it wouldn't be some advanced weird technology implemented into the site. It would act and look just like the blog forum (therefore the coding is already 1/2 done) only it'd be "for your eyes only" and sure they could add a feature to block users, why not?

And two, it's not like it would replace the blog forum. Cuz I like how the forum works and think it's really unique and sometimes usefull.
